Loving tenderness defined

Friday, June 12, 2020

My entire childhood was a lie.  Then again, my childhood was a mere 40 years ago, give or take 8 years, so perhaps it was just a different normal than the normal of today.  My first major life-bending milestone was turning 18.  Being ripped from hearth and home and thrown to the loving tenderness of a few angry drill sergeants, I was then instructed of how I had been wronged.

Pockets are not pockets, they’re Air Force handwarmers.  I’m not white, I’m green. I’m not human, I’m a worm.  A bed is a bunk.  Water, soil and sun do not grow grass, blood does.  All of the grass everywhere, belongs to Staff Sergeant Pachuca.  Meals are chow and are not served in a kitchen, they’re served in a chow hall.  My normal had definitely changed.

Loving tenderness defined
Loving tenderness defined

I’ve had many other milestones along the way and with them came many other normals.  Leaving the service, the birth of my daughter, marriage, divorce, the birth of my boys, growing old(er), business and so on.  My marriage to Queen Sayira showed me a new set of childhood lies.  A new standard of normal.

Whereas previously I learned that it’s a bad idea to wear shoes in the house, I was since corrected and now understand that it’s actually illegal to do so.  Pink is ambiguously either fuchsia, rose, ruby, flamingo, thulian or 20 other colors I had not heard of before.  Latina privilege is a thing and it’s acceptable.  (It’s also enforced and expected.)  Time isn’t relative, it’s irrelevant.  Marriage became yet another new normal.

According to Queen Sayira, he was wrong
According to Queen Sayira, he was wrong

This new normal that everyone talks about isn’t the first new normal that we’ve experienced in the world as a whole either.  Sometimes it was more subtle.  New Normal was used in business and economics referring to financial conditions following the financial crisis of 2007-2008.  The same term was used for the aftermath of the 2008–2012 global recession.  This is just yet another new normal proving once again that “normal” is simply the status quo of the moment.

Today’s new normal, the newest of new, all bright and shiny and ready to be explored is truly wonderful.  OK, death is bad, I get it.  Hell, I know that I could eventually get it and it could kill me, but NOT TODAY! (My serological test came back negative!)  What I’m talking about is the aftermath of this whole thing.

The millenials were right.  Did I really just type that?  Cash is antiquated and ridiculous.  Digital payments of all forms will end up being the new norm.  Yes, even to purchase that $0.50 piece of bubble gum.  Yes, even that $1.07 parking lot fee.

At-home delivery is going to be a must.  Sure, this was already big in the USA and Canada, France and England.  In smaller countries it wasn’t but it will be.  Residents of Panama, you should already be immersing yourself into the fold in Panama.  I bought a mop bucket online from Do It Center and although they purport a 2 week delay in delivery, they got it to us in 2 days.  Professional services should also be big and have proven successful for those who have gotten a jump on the game.  My nutritionist used to travel from Arraijan to Panama City in the worst traffic, doing whatever possible to meet a handful of clients and was seemingly always late for everything because of it.  Now, he attends to so many more clients in a shorter amount of time, giving them a better service than ever before.  Because of the pandemic, he’s gone international and has clients in Colombia and elsewhere.  He didn’t even have a bank account prior to the pandemic!

A once culturally accepted form of affection will be damaged.  Things like the 3-cheek kiss in Europe, the common handshake, hugs and maybe even that kiss on a first date will be things of the past.  Not even HIV/AIDS scrubbed that first date kiss.

On-site shopping is going to be quite the challenge, what with the need to check everyones temperatures, ensure the use of masks, adding gel dispensers and other gadgets to the work place could make it taxing on the customer, even moreso than before.  That means, small businesses will be affected and if they don’t learn now, how to do this online, most are going to be extinct.

Frugality – one of my first favorite “big words”.  Many have now learned that disaster could strike at any time and not having any savings to show for years of employment is a bad thing.  I don’t know if everyone has learned their lesson, but they should have.  Too many have taken to the sin of need “it”, “right now”.  They’ve settled on their own lie that they’re not able to save right now, because they don’t make enough money, or life is too expensive.  The truth is it doesn’t matter how much you do make, what matters is how much you don’t spend.  Culturally, every kid in the USA absolutely HAS to get a new car as soon as possible, falling to preying banks and loan officers.  Getting stuck in the rut of paying way too much money for something they don’t have much of a need for.  And, their parents are so proud of them for doing it.  (Insert facepalm now.)

Fast food is no longer a reference only to Hamburgers, Chicken or Pizza.  Now, it’s any food you want, from nearly any restaurant you can think of.  And for those who don’t deliver, well, they’re probably not operating at any level either.  Sure, there are a few exceptions, but those are the ones who also refuse to change to the new normal.

New Supply Chains?  Hopefully!! The pandemic taught everyone that we are too reliant on China. Why does China have to make, literally, fricking everything!?  For the first two months of this debacle, if you weren’t China, you couldn’t get ibuprofen, N95 masks (you know, the good ones!) or personal protection equipment for medical staff!  You either didn’t get them, or you made them yourself.  Hey, now THERE’S a concept, why don’t we just make them ourselves??  The world has to diversify more and become more sovereign.  In this sense, being a nationalist doesn’t sound too bad, now does it?

Crowds – not a big fan of crowds anyways for personal and security reasons.  We all know how crowds are a metaphoric Petri dish for this type of virus.  Having been a part of the security control force for massive music festivals and similar events, we would always worry about what to do in case of a spontaneous fire?  At least, with a fire, you can SEE what’s happening.  I have a feeling that people will go back to these massive events, but still with the remnants of this virus quite present to thought.  Will these events happen in 2020 yet?  Doubtful.  Maybe not even 2021.

Flexible work environments – When this hit off, I was working daily, like EVERY day in the city which meant a 1-hour transit one-way, each day and each way.  When I began staying home, I felt like I was betraying my clients somehow.  Not being physically present every second of the day was once a priority, a must.  Now, not only am I liking this new way to work, I think it should have been the way to do things years ago.  It took a swift kick in the COVID for us to realize it.  Now, large multi-national corporations are announcing long-term plans for the same.  Facebook founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg told staff it was “aggressively opening up remote hiring” in July. He expects half of its workforce to do their jobs outside Facebook’s offices over the next five to 10 years.  This follows moves by other tech firms in Silicon Valley, including Twitter, which said employees can work from home “forever” if they wish.

There is so much more, but the good will outweigh the bad.  Our isolation will bring us together.  The lock down will give us more time.  Anything once made and destroyed can be built again if we need it.

Yoli’s Summary:

With the pandemic, Panamanian society faces a huge crisis. Initially, the majority agreed on the need to close the country and to test the total quarantine to control contagion and thus not exceed the hospital capacity and health services. The Government took positive steps with transparency in health information and in the face of the economic crisis that was looming over all, it began to structure solidarity palliatives, such as moratorium measures, food aid and economic support bonds. The limited scope of the moratorium, the logistics of delivery of support, and the amounts contributed to help the affected population began to generate the first cracks in the citizen unit. In addition to this, complaints have arisen for inadequate use of resources and a palpable improvisation and inconsistency in sanitary measures that are reflected in the scope and management of the quarantine. The exhaustion of the different governmental levels and the constant pressures of all kinds, create levels of hopelessness in the population that the road map to overcome the crisis does not clearly see. On the other hand, we have the mean behavior of financial and service companies, which, with insatiable greed, are demanding payments from debtor citizens who cannot work due to quarantine. Today, soon reaching almost twenty thousand infected and on the way to half a thousand deaths, we have discovered a society with deep economic and social inequality, showing its enormous cultural deficiencies, the product of poor education and suffering a high dose of corruption. At all levels, but even with this reality that lacerates us all, Panamanians must be united around a coherent plan of social aid that takes into account and benefits the majority of the population, in order to recover the country economically and above all, regain hope.

PERCENTAGES OF POSITIVE TESTS IN JUNE, THE HIGHEST IN THE PANDEMIC

Health authorities went from performing a daily average of 1,300 tests in May to 2,000 this month.
Health authorities went from performing a daily average of 1,300 tests in May to 2,000 this month.

The percentages of positive tests in the first 11 days of June are the highest since it was known that the pandemic was in the country.

For example, on June 1 there was a positivity percentage of 41.33% of the total tests performed. While yesterday it was 31.21%.

Rodrigo DeAntonio, advisor to the Ministry of Health, stated that during the last week a daily average of very close to 30% positivity has been reported in tests to detect the coronavirus.

“This is due to two things: the higher rate of contagion that has been occurring in some townships and also to the search that is being made of these cases,” he said.

Health authorities went from performing a daily average of 1,300 tests in May to 2,000 this month, as part of an aggressive, house-to-house strategy to detect more infections, especially in the townships with more cases.

For Jorge Luis Prosperi, a public health specialist, it was necessary to massify the tests to reach 2,000 per day.

Percentages per month and new cases

The average percentage of positive tests per month in March was 15.14%; in April, 23.24%, and in May, 18.25%. Yesterday, the health authorities reported 697 new cases and 418 accumulated deaths.

UBER IMPLEMENTS ADAPTATIONS IN THE MIDST OF THE PANDEMIC

The Uber transport platform has proceeded to implement a series of functionalities in Panama and worldwide as part of the adaptations that are being carried out in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to adapt to the new normality.

They detail adaptations implemented by Uber in the midst of the pandemic. Hugo Famania

Gabriel Gutiérrez, manager of Uber in Panama, reported that among these adaptations is the creation of a facial recognition system.

“The driving partners create a facial recognition technology to identify if they are using masks, that is, they have to take a selfie with the cell phone every time they connect to the platform and there they identify if it is the person and if they are actually using a mask, ”explained Gutiérrez in Telemetro Reporta.

He added that another of the functionalities consists in the creation of a security center within the platform so that on each trip the driving partner can say if the necessary conditions exist to make the trip,

“that is, if the passenger has masks, if the The car has been cleaned in the correct way, and so you have to go through a series of checks to confirm that everything is in order ”.

He added that the function has also been implemented so that when a user or driving partner is not comfortable for some reason and decides to cancel the trip, there can be feedback on what happened.

COPA TO RESTART OPERATIONS ON JUNE 26

According to the company, the stoppage of operations due to the pandemic generates losses of $ 85 million per month. The Panamanian company Copa Airlines estimates to resume flights, “gradually” on June 26, a date that is subject to the decisions of the health authorities.

The company indicated that

“we will start with approximately 10% of the total existing operations prior to the impact of COVID-19, due to very low passenger demand in the short and medium term; a high level of reservation cancellations; and that most of the countries of the region maintain operating or entry restrictions on their territory. ”

They highlighted that they have reinforced the hygiene and disinfection measures that will be part of the way of operating, such as

“the use of masks by crews and passengers, the decrease in physical interaction throughout the stages of the trip, among others.”

The stoppage costs Copa $ 85 million per month, according to the company, which added that

“the financial situation continues to worsen, as the health crisis spreads throughout the region and the world and travel restrictions are maintained due to authorities”.

“We estimate a reduction in annualized income that could be 70%,” they reiterated.

They added that “by 2021 we estimate to operate a little more than 40%, that is, we will be less than half the capacity that we used to have pre-COVID-19”.

According to the information, each of the 102 aircraft on the ground follows a maintenance plan to ensure that they meet quality and safety standards. International flights were suspended on March 22, a measure that was postponed and is in effect until June 23.

DARIÉN GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES INSTALLATION OF MODULAR HOSPITAL IN METETÍ

The Darien Government announced that a modular hospital will be installed in Metetí de Pinogana, in the event of COVID-19. This, far from generating applause, aroused the outrage of some residents. The news came to light through photos published on the Facebook portal of the Darien Government. The center would be used, above all, to attend to migrants stranded on the border with Colombia, affected by the coronavirus.

“As mayor I have not been notified of any of that. They told me that they would move the migrants to that place with tents as a temporary shelter, not as a modular hospital, “said Janelle González, mayor of Pinogana, the district to which Metetí belongs.

Janelle González

“This thing about looking for a place for a modular hospital for them is not at all clear,” added the Bishop of Darien

Monsignor Pedro Hernández.

The curious thing, and which has sparked outrage in some people in Darien, is that the announced temporary hospital will be right alongside a health megastructure that the State has been building for years. The work, tendered ten years ago for 48 million dollars, is paralyzed. IBT, the company that earned it, has been involved in corruption scandals with these projects. The Facebook post itself picks up on that outrage. Some people question why the hospital works that could have served to deal with the pandemic have not been given speed. Darien does not have this type of infrastructure.

“If instead of continuing with those Modular hospitals that already know the quality they have do not invest in the hospital they have half way and that a certain area is enabled, so that investment will remain in it, and not pay other money from the port blo then dismantling the modular, “said netizen Rodrigo González.

From the government’s account, it was answered that

“legal litigation prevents us from advancing the company, we only need to resolve the issues, we will resume the work.”

But the mayor maintains it. In December, the government gave the construction company a year to finish, but no progress is seen.

“What they are going to spend on a modular could enable what we have unfinished, we would have left. We have to think about the later ”, González insisted.

In Darien they denounce that, in addition, there is a Minsa-Capsi detained 95%. The Minsa said that the hospital will be donated by Canada. In May, the government of that country announced a support of 300 thousand dollars for two modular hospitals and two social programs. Investment will be required to get the modular medical center up and running. Civil society organizations are concerned about the purchasing mechanisms that are used. They fear that scenarios like the controversial Albrook modular hospital will be repeated.

“In the references we have, the one that was built does not meet the safety requirements nor do they have the correct prices. There are many questions to be solved by few people showing their faces,” said Annette Planells, of the Movement of Independents.

Until this Tuesday, only in Metetí, where the modular hospital is to be installed, there are 127 cases of COVID-19. This week a sanitary fence was imposed in the towns of Yaviza and Agua Fría.

DINING ROOMS AND ENCLOSED AREAS ARE HIGH-RISK OF COVID-19 CONTACT

Despite the recommendations of the health authorities, many people continue to contract COVID-19 in our country. Experts guide us from the most vulnerable places to infections. Dr. Gladys Guerrero, Epidemiologist of the Social Security Fund (CSS) maintains that the increase in cases that we see is due to the relaxation of activities from about 15 days ago, because the population did not take sufficient care of itself.

“People were seen on buses, in supermarkets, parks, in the Cinta Costera doing exercises without masks and many did not keep the proper distance,” she said.

The former health minister Miguel Mayo stated in his twitter account that the places of high risk of contagion are closed areas, where the distance between people is less than 2 meters. Also in areas where viral circulation is high such as hospitals, nursing homes, prisons and where for example singing or speaking aloud such as gyms, bars and restaurants. The health authorities have indicated that distancing measures must be taken in the dining rooms because they have also become a point of risk for contagion.

“We have found that the most vulnerable moments are when we are eating, they sit very close and take off the mask and talk. Then the droplets contaminate the others,” said the director of the Social Security Fund, Enrique Lau.

The deputy minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre asked the population that when going to lunch, it be carried out gradually, avoiding conversations and keeping their distance to reduce the risk of possible contagion. He also indicated that when you get home you have to disinfect all belongings, even if food or products are ordered through the delivery services. He added that the townships where there are more cases are coincidentally where more complaints are received that there are people having parties and not complying with the mobility restriction measures. The virus transmission rate rose to 1.4 according to the latest report on the behavior of COVID19 in our country. And there are no positive forecasts for what will be seen in the coming days after the disobedience experienced in some communities when the quarantine was lifted on June 1.

TWITTER DISARMS THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT’S ATTEMPT TO IMPROVE THEIR COVID19 IMAGE

The social network Twitter revealed on Thursday that it has suspended 174,000 accounts linked to the Chinese government that participated in a coordinated effort to promote narratives favorable to its management of the coronavirus crisis and the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, among other issues. The accounts were deactivated during the first three months of 2020 and, according to Twitter, most of them wrote messages in Mandarin and sought to improve the image of the Government led by the Chinese Communist Party, mainly in Asia.

According to Twitter, the propaganda network did not get much impact online, and the majority of messages it created ended up being shared by other accounts that were part of the same operation, instead of being propagated independently by other users. The social network explained that it has found links between this operation and another one also carried out by the Chinese government in mid-2019 that spread, in addition to Twitter, to Facebook and YouTube.

On that occasion, the main objective of the campaign was to influence the perception of the crisis unleashed between Beijing and the autonomy of Hong Kong, and it had 210 YouTube channels, 200,000 Twitter accounts, and seven pages, three groups and five accounts. of users on Facebook.

“We have certain evidence that this is a state-supported operation. Specifically, we have identified large groups of accounts that behave in a coordinated manner to amplify messages related to the protests in Hong Kong,” those responsible for Twitter said on that occasion.

The blue bird social network is banned in China by the government, so accounts connected to the platform via virtual private networks, although some of them used unblocked IP addresses. In addition to the Chinese accounts, Twitter also reported Thursday that it has deactivated 1,153 accounts linked to a propaganda campaign originating in Russia, and another 7,340 from an operation linked to the Turkish government.

ENDNOTES

And to wrap this up, I present to you, my shotglass collection.  I started this 30 years agoand each glass represents a place that I’ve personally visited.  I almost started a coffee mug collection and I’m so glad that I didn’t.  We built this fine piece of furniture to house them all and if they would have been coffee mugs, I can only imagine the size of the furniture I’d need for it.  These shone here are only a portion of the entire 683 shotglass collection.  I’m only missing two continents that I’ve yet to visit, but to the haters out there who can’t believe it, yes, I have actually been to the exotic reach of God’s country, also known as Wisconsin.
