The alarm I set for 4:30AM sounds off which gives Queen Sayira an unexpected start to her slumber.  A bit sluggish myself, I work my way to the clothes I have laid out with such delicate care only to abuse them later with the smells of nature and the blaring sun.   My old, faded, yet trusty Keens are at the foot of the stairs as well.  Given the occasion, there’s nothing else I would put on my feet.  They fit snug as I squeak squeak squeak across the bedroom floor, mostly certainly annoying my limber wife.  She’s a good sport though pretending to sleep, but her deafening silence gives her away.  With one last squeak, I enter my boys’ room flick the light switch and ask that pivotal question, “Who wants to go fishing?”.  Still unconscious, without uttering a single word, they both raise their hands with heads under the pillows and eyes wide shut.

I make my way to the kitchen as the boys get dressed, zombie their ways to the bathroom for the ritual teeth-brushing, attend to the minor “get out of my way” complaints and then a final scramble to the dining room to delight in my fried egg creations.  As usual, I cooked for 3, but made a mess for 14; still, Queen Sayira won’t complain about it until someday in the near future when it was more convenient to win an argument.  Then I move to the classic Dad questions, “Who’s going to get the biggest today?”, “Who’s going to get the most?”, “Which lure do you want to use?”  The answers are always the same.  Brandon gets the most and Brett JR gets the biggest.  Brandon loves any lure that actually looks like live bait in the water to him and Brett Jr will usually just follow my lead and go for poppers.  One trick question I’ll ask, “Did you guys pack sunscreen?”  They’ll both say “Yes”, but I know they didn’t.  I did and that’s just fine.

I love making fried eggs for the boys. Ignore the beer, that’s a quasi-necessary ingredient.

The gear was packed the night before, resting in the back of the XTrail waiting just as anxiously as we were to get to Gamboa.  From our house to the lake, there’s very little traffic.  An occasional drunk just getting home after a successful night of debauchery.  But we clear them easily and within 45 minutes we make it to the public landing where Rodriguez and his clan are eager to help.  The first to arrive this time, we even watched as the local police opened the gates by removing a simple padlock and swooshing the metal barriers to the side.

Removing the tie-downs, setting the motor, prepping the gear and laying everything out where they should be, one of the guys asks us if we need minnows.  Brett Jr scoffs at them jokingly, “We don’t need no stinking minnows” in a perfect spaghetti western drawl.  Inquisitive, the minnow-guy looks at me and I just tell him, “No gracias.”.  I glide the boat to the water, Rodriguez sets us up, starting the motor as I park the car at the top of the hill.  Parking was a synch as no other anglers had arrived yet.  “Amateurs…”, I’ll competitively think to myself with an ear-to-ear smile.

The water was glass.  We left the Chagres River in seconds and were out to the canal and on our way to a quick 20-minute jaunt to one of our favorite spots.  I had the GPS on, but didn’t need to look at it once.  We’ve been to this spot a hundred times or more.  The boat planed off the water with ease as Brett and Brandon hunkered down to brace from the wind and cool summer morning.  Coming up to our first turn just off of Barro Colorado, I slowed to watch for submerged boulders and previously protruding stumps.  Brandon loves to perch himself on the bow to help with his near-bionic eyesight, usually catching glimpse of a stump just a few feet off the port side and then another mirage off the starboard.  The metal posts erected with red and white paint are all I need to navigate our way in, but I never have the heart to tell him.  He’ll be glad to hear “Good job, buddy!”, once we’re through.

We’re there.  I point to the shoreline and almost on cue, we see something large swirl.  Brett’s eyes bulged, Brandon lunged for his pre-prepared pole and my heart warmed as I took in all that this was.  It was absolutely perfect.  Within a few minutes, the morning predictions were true.  Brett caught the swirling beasty and had him to the boat before helping him with the net.  It was a very nice Robalo or “Snook” as we gringos call it.  I’m surprised he even got it to the boat with the gear he was using.  The 8lb line he uses is lighter for Peacock and no leader, but this catch had his name scribed on it since the creation of time.  It pulled enough for the excitement of a 12-year old, but just enough so as to not break that line.  Soon enough, on his own, Brandon had caught enough to feed us all for a few days.  Brett Jr was still bragging about his first catch of the day and I laughed to myself as I thought of the 48 snags I had to manipulate and mend.  The sun began to scorn us as we were just reaching the 5th hour on the lake.  We’d done well and seen so much.  The flock of Tucans, the stop by a mango tree to pick a few for mom, spying a caiman as it slithered of its throne and into the cool water and of course listening to the earie call of the howler monkeys as they threatened to attack us if we got too close (or at least that’s what Brett told his brother).

The trip back is adventurous as the water is rough from the strong late-morning winds.  Brandon was out cold once we got through and in minutes his brother followed suit.  The dock is busier now as the jet skiers give us their show of how reckless they can be showing off to their trophy girlfriends and fellow drinking buddies.  Yep, I’m ready to go home as I mentally face palm myself.  But not until I get to watch as the boys tell the fish filet guy how well they’ve done.  Much more wideawake than before, they work their way off the docks and down towards the landing.  Brett looks over his shoulder towards me in approval and I give him the go ahead with a wave of my hand and a nod of my head.  So much is going on, but all in synchronicity; the slide of the filet knife, moving and securing the boat, tourists clumsily entering their chariot off to watch some monkeys and me soaking in the view as the boys play in the water.  I look down at my Keens and laugh as once again I forgot to put sunscreen on my feet, leaving behind a zebra-like pattern across my toes.  Life couldn’t get much better than this.

And this, my dear reader, is precisely the first damn thing I’m doing once Panama decides to open the public dock, hopefully sometime before I go insane!

TIPS FOR TAKING KIDS FISHING

Given my opening story, I thought it would be good to give a few tips on how to get a kid (or any new angler) a push in the direction of fishing for the first time.

You can create memories with your kids by taking them fishing, but keep these tips in mind before you head out to the water. These suggestions will help you create an enjoyable fishing experience for them, and could be the beginning of the next generation of anglers.

GO TO A PLACE THAT YOU KNOW IS ACTIVE

Fishing with kids is not the time to try out new spots or to practice new techniques. Go to a tried-and-true location where you know fish will be. Just cast out a minnow or lureand you’ll be reeling in fish in no time.

TARGET SMALLER FISH

Most anglers want to catch large trophies, but starting small is usually the best bet for first time anglers. Bringing in a thrashing giant can be scary or discouraging for kids, so go after lake fish before moving on to salt water.

Ta-daaaa! Like, magic!

PLAN TO FISH FOR ABOUT AN HOUR AND THEN PLAY BY EAR

Kids are impatient, and can get bored quickly. Forcing them to stay out by the water for an entire day could turn them off to fishing altogether. Plan on an hour trip, and if the kids are having fun and want to stay out longer, stay out and enjoy!

It’s likely that kids will get bored, distracted, or fidgety, during their first fishing experience. It’s possible that they may need a break or may have more fun doing something else, so go ahead and let them explore. They might want to fish for a while, and then go off chasing frogs or searching for turtles. You can even join in by playing “find-the-coolest-rock” or “count-the-most-dragonflies.” Ultimately, you want kids to see fishing as an enjoyable outdoor activity.

LET THEM REEL IN THE FISH

Okay, so after a half hour the kid is off playing with sticks and you’re still fishing. Finally, you hook one. Call the kids over and have them reel the fish in. If they say no, that’s fine, but letting them reel it in could give them the first hands-on fishing excitement they need to become life-long anglers. 

REMEMBER THE SNACKS AND DRINKS

We all know kids can get hungry fast. So, before you make the journey to the fishing hole, pack up some kid-friendly snacks, a few drinks and plenty of water. The last thing you want is to get to the water only to have the kid say “I’m hungry,” and then lose all interest in fishing. While we’re on the topic, don’t forget the sunscreen and bug-spray, which will keep them protected, more comfortable, and more likely to want to go fishing again soon.

DON’T PUSH THEM TOO HARD

The last tip I can give you is to not push fishing on kids. Don’t force kids to bait the hook or handle a fish if they’re just not comfortable with it. It’s also a good idea to try to teach them good techniques, but don’t spend all of your time nit-picking their casting motion or reeling. You want them to have fun, learn a little on their own, and enjoy spending quality time while trying out a new hobby. Give them a few pointers, and then let them enjoy the experience for themselves.

THE RIGHT GEAR FOR YOUR FISHING ADVENTURE

Nothing sucks more than lines breaking or tangling, not taking enough hooks, sinkers, etc.  The poles are the least of your worries.  Make sure the equipment is sufficient and you have enough supplies to make it through the day.

FOCUS ON YOUR KIDS AND FOCUS ON THE FUN.
