The news hit me like… I don’t know how.  All emotion faded and I was immediately lost in thought.  I really didn’t know him anymore as our lives drifted apart 30 years ago, but his impact stayed with me to this very day.  He was a good man.  I was only 11, but he took us all in without haste.  There was no discussion to be had; my mom, my sister, and I finally had a new home, a stable home.  It was an impressionable time in my life.  Things were changing and I needed someone to tell me what to do about it.  Both of my grandparents were already gone and Dad’s advice was rarely the best advice (but, then, who was I to know?).  Whether it was about girls, work, cars, snowmobiles, fishing, gardening, snow, grass, splitting wood, bottle rockets, gun safety, Religion, and even such important decisions relating to my career path, Dave always had one of two intelligent things to say.  Either he’d give a serious life-experience answer or would simply say, “It’s up to your mom.”

Always soft-spoken and with a good heart, good intentions, he was always either serious or cracked a slight smile.  Getting a good laugh out of him was never too hard and I looked forward to trying, daily.  Living around him meant peace, guidance, certainty, care, understanding and the occasional joke.  A sturdy man, he worked his 8-5s, came home to work the garden, always keeping it pristine or always working the snowblower; obviously, it depended on the season.  As I grew, he showed me the ethics of hard work, smart work.  I definitely learned how to mow the lawn.  It was always about focus, dedication, and patience.  Always a lot of patience.

It’s fascinating how the mind works.  The moment I heard of his passing, I immediately began thinking, “Did I mirror those same ethics?  What would he think of my family?”  I chuckled and realized the first thing he’d ask me if he ever came to visit, “When was the last time you mowed your lawn?”  He’d be calm, but serious in his inquisitiveness.  I’d be embarrassed and without excuse, we’d crack a beer together, but without a moment’s notice, I’d be happily pushing the mower again.  As a matter of fact, I couldn’t get “cutting the lawn” out of my head that night or the following morning, so just after breakfast on Sunday, the boys and I were at it, cutting, raking, trimming, pruning, hauling and dumping.  Today, he would be proud of the work we put into it, but then he’d ask why I didn’t have a large garden with all of that land we have?  So, after a quick talk with Queen Sayira today, we’ve already chosen the spot where we’ll put a raised garden in next weekend.  It’ll be planted in his honor; a bit of positive, green, growth, energy from you, Dave, would be great if you have any to spare.

The only bad memory I have of him simply wasn’t even his fault.  I was already in the Army and as things go in life, my mother called to tell me that they weren’t together anymore.  The love was somehow gone.  I was crushed.  I suppose the only important thing for me was to be sure that Mom was OK.  I knew that Dave would be fine; he’s not a person totally void of emotion, but my mother’s happiness had to come first and foremost.  Besides, from day 1, it was always just her and I against the world.

No, Dave wasn’t my father.  At one point, I tried calling him “Dad”, but it just didn’t seem right.  He understood and didn’t ask much from us.  He was OK with it either way.  But thinking back, what title can you give to a man who not only accepted the love of a woman but also accepts her two children into his arms as well?  If that’s not a “Dad”, I don’t know what is.  So as my heart breaks, I call out first to my sisters Andree and Pam, brother Steve, and ask God to help them find the peace they need in this difficult time.  I pray also for Dave’s wife Mary and her children, especially my good friend Joe Nelson.

Good men and women never realize the extent of their influence and how their godly behavior can make a lasting impression on those around them.  Kids learn best by example and you were most certainly an exemplary man worthy of respect.  Dave, who I am today is, in part, due to your godly influence.  Rest easy.  Rest in peace.  I’ll see you again soon enough for more tips on the grass and the garden.

MASS VACCINATION IN RUSSIA AGAINST COVID-19 WILL START IN A MONTH

The World Health Organization (WHO) cautiously received the news that Russia had registered the world’s first vaccine against COVID-19, noting that it, like the rest, must follow the prequalification and review procedures that it marks.

Mass vaccination in Russia against COVID-19 will begin in a month, said this Sunday the director of the Gamaleya Center for Microbiology and Epidemiology, Alexandr Ginzburg, who developed the first vaccine registered in the country against the disease, Spútnik V.

The scientist, in statements to the official Russian agency RIA Nóvosti, indicated that in the next seven or ten days the studies after the registration of the preparation by the Russian Ministry of Health will begin, in which tens of thousands of people will be vaccinated.

“Apparently, the Moscow Department of Health plans to include in these tens of thousands of people doctors who work in the ‘red zone’ (where they treat seriously ill patients with COVID-19). And this is completely correct.” he added.

Guinzburg pointed out that the studies will last between four and six months, but that this will not be an obstacle to starting mass vaccination of the population, which, as the country’s authorities have declared, will be voluntary.

“The mass vaccination will begin with some delay due to which most of the vaccines already produced will be used in the studies. Then, the rest will go to citizens. The delay can be two or three weeks, perhaps a month” he explained.

The World Health Organization (WHO) cautiously received the news that Russia had registered the world’s first vaccine against COVID-19, noting that it, like the rest, must follow the prequalification and review procedures established by the agency .

The Russian vaccine was not among the six that the WHO noted last week were most advanced.

‘To date, Russia accumulates 922,853 cases of COVID-19 and 15,685 deaths from the disease.

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Russia “has skipped certain trials” when developing the vaccine, and assured that his country will not do the same.

The director of the US National Institutes of Health, Francis Collins, even compared to a “Russian roulette” the decision of the vaccine developers in Russia to skip what he described as “fundamental parts” of the approval process.

ENTREPRENEURS ASK THE GOVERNMENT FOR ANALYSIS AND ADJUSTMENT OF MOBILITY BEFORE BUSINESS OPENING

Businesses that have not been operating for more than five months will open their doors to the public following security measures.

Starting tomorrow, various businesses that have not operated for more than five months will open their doors to the public following security measures, which keeps the private sector in expectation, such as the Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture of Panama (CCIAP) since they consider “it will be essential to analyze the behavior of citizens and commercial activities, monitor the impacts of these actions, and establish the necessary adjustments.”

From this Monday, August 17, the economic activities that will be reactivated are: beauty salons, barber shops, retail stores (only at doors with purchases already made through the web), car dealerships, oenegés and works of public and private construction with significant progress in its execution before the suspension decreed in March.

In his customary weekly opinion column, Jean-Pierre Leignadier, president of the CCIAP, calls for the analysis of behavior in the face of this openness that will take place and that the necessary adjustments be made to coexist in a new environment generated by the health crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic, reported in China at the end of 2019, and which was officially reported in Panama on March 9.

RESTAURANT OWNERS ASK THE NATIONAL GOVERNMENT TO REOPEN SOON

The restaurants operate under the home delivery modality and keep between 4 to 8 people working.

After five months of being closed to the public to mitigate the contagion of the coronavirus in the country, the Association of Restaurants and Related Products of Panama (Arap) requests the National Government a prompt reopening.

“We know that the premises will not be full of customers, but we can start to move the economy of this country quickly. Our interest is to gradually reintegrate the thousands of collaborators who have suspended contracts at this time,” said the president of Arap , Sunday of Obaldia.

He indicated that to the extent that the authorities of the Ministries of Health and Commerce and Industries authorize the reopening of more economic activities, the necessary precautions must be taken to control the virus.

Currently, 20% nationwide have had to close their doors, of which 15% belong to the city of Panama, where around 1,500 restaurants operate.

In addition, the restaurants operate under the home delivery mode and keep between 4 to 8 people working.

He explained that delivery has a very high cost, since they are charged between 25 and 30% of the total purchase. Although he recognized that there is a service that has adjusted prices down to support them, charging between 10% and 14% of the purchase.

He indicated that with this service they can only pay payroll and some bills, because they are not paying other basic services, but when they have to assume these payments, it will not work. “There is a lot of desperation in the sector.”

Regarding financing, he stressed that everything is uncertain at this time and there is no clarity on how these loans can be accessed and what the requirements will be.

“At the moment nobody is safe and sound and they will have to take this into account for financing,” he said.

For several years the restaurant sector has not gone through its best moment, when the consumption of Panamanians fell significantly.

END NOTES

Just a quick update.  After doing chores today, we checked in with our latest baby bird, a single Sangre de Toro.  Baby bird is gone.  It’s been a while and long enough that baby bird probably just flew the nest.  This gave me the opportunity to prune the Lime Tree that it nested in as I’d been waiting for the freeloaders to take their time.

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…  And by all means (unless you’re in the back yard pruning lime trees) STAY HOME!!…
