Elimination of mobilization restriction by identification number; Sanctions are regulated for not complying with biosafety measures; Melatonin.

I’ve come to the conclusion that my office chair is defective.  Every morning, I get up, shower, get dressed and have my breakfast.  At that point, I’ll try to recall what I have to do for the rest of my day.  I have it written down and even marked up the remnants of a plan on the whiteboard, but it’s still a good mental exercise.  They say that whatever is at the top of your mind is your top priority.  Apparently, just before coffee, nothing’s important, because until I actually take that first sip… …nothing.  Then, I slowly meander towards the office and still I can barely recall anything that I have to do that’s urgent.  Just the same, my mind is sound and my soul is one with the universe.

But, once I sit down, the defective chair grabs me, straps me in for a ride, activating all electronic gadgets and gizmos which begin to throw “urgent matters” at me for no fewer than the next 4 hours nonstop.  I need to fix this chair.  It also has a function that activates if I attempt to lean back to rest and take a breather.  It appears to have a semi-functional, multidimensional vacuum switch that regulates my comparative rest-to-stress ratio levels.  If it detects that I’m getting the slightest hint of rest, it engulfs me in a new dimension of urgent requests.

Yesterday was no different.  I sat down, buzzers sounded off and I was hit with a massive barrage of “I need this right now” requests.  Always happy to oblige, I worked my fingers at lightening speeds and pulled together as many tasks as possible.  Then, before any more buzzers could go off, I sprinted to my car, mustering enough strength to drive in to town for a much-needed back alignment, security inspections, a review of our monitoring center and then off to Riba Smith for the ingredients I’ll need for this weekend’s Pot Roast dinner I’m planning.

The day went well, all in order, problems resolved, so I headed once again to the confines of my humble abode.  As per the Queen’s protocol, at the door I was once again divested of my earthly belongings and shame-marched to the shower, draped only in a towel.  After the biohazard protocol was completed, I returned to my home-office probably out of habit and there it was staring at me.  I swear I saw it turn to face me as I entered, with those big, evil googly eyes.

The closer I got to it, the googlier the eyes, the eviler its intentions.  A part of me wanted to turn and flee, but I knew I had to get last night’s report out.  There was too much at stake not to.  MINSA had spoken and the people needed to know.  The look on its face was telling; we both knew that it had me right where it wanted me.  Defeated, but intentionally to some extent, I gave in to its will and sat down.  The buzzers sounded, news reports blared, cell phones rang… …it was me, the chair and the report once again.

Yoli’s Summary

The Covid-19 coronavirus has changed the world and has opened countless questions within the health sector. One of the most recurrent is if patients who are infected with the virus acquire immunity once the disease is over.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): “People who have tested positive for Covid-19 do not need to be quarantined or tested again for up to three months. as long as they don’t develop symptoms again, “the CDC said in an interview with CNN.

This could be erroneously interpreted as a three-month immunity after the virus has been overcome; however, this is not proven and is that people can continue to test positive for up to three months after the first diagnosis.

In the case of the Covid-19 coronavirus, it has been shown that antibodies can disappear quickly, as Dr. Sanjay Gupta tells CNN: “Unfortunately, some recent studies have found that antibodies to this particular coronavirus can disappear with pretty quickly, especially in people who have had mild cases of Covid-19. “

It should be remembered that last July a study carried out in Spain concluded that only 5% of the patients who had Covid-19 coronavirus had antibodies, which put the remaining 95% at risk of acquiring the virus again.

What is a fact is the uncertainty of the disease and everything related to it, including immunity. For this reason, experts emphasize the importance of continuing to use face masks and all the necessary protection measures.

“We think that antibodies are correlated with protection, but we don’t really know yet […] Don’t go looking for reasons not to wear a mask, just wear it. Get used to it. We want to be all together in this to affirm our solidarity”, said Dr. William Schaffner, professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

MELATONIN, ANOTHER HOPE AGAINST COVID-19

Some compounds derived from melatonin, which is involved in the regulation of biological rhythms and sleep and which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, could be useful to treat and prevent the disease of the new coronavirus.

Melatonin, a hormone naturally present in our body, plays an endocrine role associated with the biological sleep-wake rhythm and adaptation to the light-dark cycle, but it also fulfills non-hormonal functions. It is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, scavenger of free radicals and performs functions related to the response of the body’s innate immunity.

This hormone, produced by the pineal gland and other parts of the body, is used in the form of medicine or as part of food supplements to treat insomnia or ‘jet lag’, as well as in skin creams with anti-aging and restorative properties, among other applications.

But not only that, melatonin could also play an important role in the treatment of COVID-19, according to scientists who are testing the use of this substance to treat some of the most serious effects of the disease and there are already doctors who recommend to use it, in a preventive way, while the vaccine for this disease arrives.

Treatment for critical patients

Pharmamel, a biotechnology company that emerged from the spin-off program of the University of Granada (UGR), has started the ‘Melcovid’ clinical trial in Spain in which a new melatonin-based treatment is administered to patients with COVID-19, to prove its effectiveness, with the support of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) and the UGR.

This firm (https://pharmamel.com) has been founded by UGR researchers (www.ugr.es) Germaine Escames and Darío Acuña, pioneers in research on melatonin, related molecules and their metabolites, in different models disease, as well as in the aging process and in its application in the pharmaceutical sector.

“Severe COVID-19 is characterized by a hyperinflammatory state, oxidation and an exaggerated immune response that leads to a storm of cytokines (proteins that regulate some cells of the immune system) and to sepsis (serious and life-threatening infection) and multi-organ failure” explains Dr. Escames to Efe. ‘

“As in sepsis (a serious and life-threatening infection), in severe viral infections such as Ebola virus or SARS-CoV-2, the immune response can do more harm than good, and melatonin can help reduce this damage ”, explains Dr. Germaine Escames, from the UGR.

“On the other hand, as in sepsis, in severe viral infections such as those produced by SARS-CoV, MERS, Ebola, SARS-CoV-2 (causing COVID-19) and other related viruses, the immune response it can produce more harm than good ”, he points out.

“In our research group we have been studying the effects of melatonin for more than 30 years and we have shown that it is a powerful scavenger of free radicals to reduce oxidative damage to tissues and an effective anti-inflammatory agent to depress ‘cytokine storms'” , highlights Escames.

“The antiseptic efficacy of melatonin led us to use in 2016 an injectable with this substance patented by Pharmamel in a clinical trial in septic patients (with sepsis), to whom it was administered intravenously, with remarkable results”, he highlights .

“In that clinical trial, the same injectable that is now being tested in patients with COVID-19 was used, and it was possible to reduce mortality to 0% (normally 25%) and reduce hospital stay by 43%”, according to Escames.

“In the current phase II single-center MELCOVID clinical trial, melatonin is being administered intravenously, with a formulation patented by the UGR and SAS,” says Escames.

“The results of the trial will be obtained between September and October of this year, since, as new outbreaks and infected patients proliferate, it is a matter of time before a significant number of these new infections end up requiring health care and hospitalization,” he said.

Dr. Escames emphasizes that, depending on the results, the emergency use of intravenous melatonin may be requested to apply it in more hospitals, and “in turn, we will request authorization from the EMA (European Medicines Agency) and the FDA ( American Drug Agency) ”, he advances.

As prevention, while the vaccine arrives

For their part, Dr. Jan Tesarik and Dr. Raquel Mendoza-Tesarik, directors of the MARGen assisted reproduction clinic (www.clinicamargen.com) in Granada, recommend an immediate application, both preventive and curative, of the hormone melatonin to combat COVID-19.

These doctors are of the opinion that “although it is not definitively confirmed by randomized controlled trials, the beneficial effect of melatonin against this disease is strongly confirmed by circumstantial evidence.”

“Melatonin does not have important side effects and is effective in other pathologies, such as infertility, some types of cancer, different complications pregnancy or Alzheimer’s.

It is likely to help against COVID-19 but, in no case, can it harm the patient, “according to these experts.

“Melatonin appears to be effective, it is cheap and readily available, and it should be distributed free to people at risk,” they recommend.

Doctors Tesarik use melatonin to treat pathologies that affect the female reproductive system and whose underlying mechanism is very similar to that of COVID-19, as they point out.

“It is about endometriosis, adenomyosis, and some cases of embryo implantation failures, spontaneous abortions and premature births,” explains Dr. Tesarik to Efe.

He explains that these ailments cause “a strong, blind and exaggerated reaction against something that the body does not consider as its own. This response kills large groups of cells rather than specifically targeting a pathogen, “he adds.

“For example, in some women the immune system recognizes a newly implanted embryo as an intruder because half of its antigens are of paternal origin. Here we speak of an innate, blind immunity, ”says Tesarik.

“Melatonin helps to modify this blind response and transform it into an adaptive, specific and directed response against the pathogen causing the disease, as the experience of the Ebola virus has taught us, and with this substance this same result could be achieved in patients with COVID-19”, it indicates.

In addition to the use of high doses of melatonin intravenously in critically ill patients, as is being investigated, Tesarik proposes to use melatonin in a preventive way, recommending “that people at risk, such as the elderly and staff, take tablets of this compound health, and those who are more exposed to contagion by frequenting human groups, “he concludes.

THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION ASKS COUNTRIES TO JOIN ITS DEVICE TO GUARANTEE ACCESS TO A VACCINE

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday asked its member countries to join its device to access the vaccine against COVID-19, to fight against the “nationalism of vaccines.”

“We must prevent the nationalism of vaccines”, declared the director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in a virtual press conference, requesting to share his tools to allow the planet to fight against the new coronavirus.

He indicated that this Tuesday he sent “a letter to all member states to encourage them” to adhere to the future device for global access to the covid-19 vaccine, known by the name of COVAX.

At his side, Bruce Aylward, one of his advisers, indicated that the terms of this device are being finalized, but indicated that more than 170 countries – representing almost 70% of the world’s population – have already stated that they want to integrate. to the mechanism or at least they have expressed their interest.

“We expect a firm response from all countries by August 31,” he added. As the race for vaccines intensifies, the coronavirus pandemic has caused 775,000 deaths worldwide since late December, according to a report prepared by AFP based on official sources.

Once the vaccines are available, the WHO proposes that they be allocated in two phases following the COVAX mechanism.

“During the first phase, the doses will be distributed proportionally and simultaneously to all participating countries (in COVAX), with the aim of reducing global risk. In phase 2, the threat and vulnerability of the countries, “explained Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“The quickest way to end this pandemic and reactivate economies is to start by protecting the most exposed populations in all parts of the world, and not entire populations in a few countries,” he warned.

“Priority will be given to workers who are on the front line (of fire) in health and social care establishments, since they are essential to serve and protect the population, and are in close contact with groups with a high risk of mortality “, that is, with those over 65 years of age and those with other pathologies that can be combined in a negative way.

“For most countries, an allocation (of vaccines) during phase 1, which allows reaching 20% of the population, would cover most of the risk groups,” said the WHO director general.

THE EXTENSION OF MOBILITY SCHEDULES WILL DEPEND ON WHAT THE POPULATION DOES, SAYS VICE MINISTER MONTILLA

Some economic activities reopened as of this Monday, August 17.

The extension of mobility schedules so that more economic activities are reactivated in the country will depend on the behavior of the population.

This was reiterated by the Vice Minister of Commerce, Omar Montilla, this Monday, August 17, when several activities that were suspended due to the new coronavirus pandemic were resumed.

In that sense, Montilla acknowledged that many businesses have not yet opened their activities, betting precisely on a revision of the extension of the hours. This review will take place in two weeks, the official said.

The extension will happen “as long as things are done well,” reiterated the vice minister.

“Some speak of 12 hours, others speak of 4 hours, we are going to see the behavior of the population on the subject of controlled purchases,” said the official.

He insisted that with the reopening that began this Monday, all the actors are expected to take the corresponding measures and this pilot plan will work. “We faithfully believe that this should begin to revolve around reactivation and job creation, but it will depend on the behavior of people who move to their jobs and those who come to withdraw their purchases,” he added.

Montilla said that they do not want what happened with the opening of block 2 to happen, when they stopped managing safe conducts and “everyone left and we had a higher level of contagion.” Through this pilot plan, the aim is to build trust and be a benchmark for the region and the world, he remarked.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has recalled the mandatory use of the mask when leaving home, keep physical distance and wash hands frequently and the use of alcoholic gel.

The workers who are returning to their jobs and those who are already working were reminded that at lunchtime at their jobs they should keep a distance of two meters from their colleagues and avoid all going to the cafeteria at the same time.

FIGALI WILL NOT RECEIVE PATIENTS WITH COVID-19 UNTIL ROOF LEAKS ARE RESOLVED

The Panamanian president, Laurentino Cortizo said this Tuesday, August 18, that patients with COVID-19 will not be transferred to the Figali Convention Center, until the problem of leaks in the roof is 100% resolved.

“I have told you, I need one hundred percent that this issue of drops be resolved, as long as that does not happen, hold on, do not put patients there with leaks,” said Cortizo during an act.

Cortizo indicated that the facilities have been doing waterproofing work.

On August 11, Cortizo reported that Figali should be ready to receive patients with COVID-19 on Friday the 14th, however, there are still problems on the roof.

For the care of these patients, 4 wards with 160 beds were enabled in Figali, of which 3 are for moderate patients and one for respiratory care.

Regarding the Amador Convention Center, the head of state said that they will carry out adaptation work, but the objective is not to use it.

AUSTRALIA WILL PRODUCE A VACCINE AGAINST THE CORONAVIRUS THAT IT WILL SUPPLY FREE TO THEIR POPULATION

Health personnel give a vaccine.

Australia has guaranteed to obtain a “promising” vaccine against the coronavirus, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Tuesday, explaining that the country will manufacture it and distribute it free to the population.

According to the head of government, an agreement was reached with the pharmaceutical group AstraZeneca on the vaccine that they are developing with the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom.

“If this vaccine is effective, we will make it and supply it free to 25 million Australians,” he said.

“The Oxford vaccine is one of the most advanced and promising in the world, and with this agreement we have guaranteed priority access for all Australians,” he added.

That vaccine project is one of five that are already being tested on a massive scale, with large groups of volunteers, and the researchers hope to achieve results by the end of the year.

Australia must however reach a definitive agreement with AstraZeneca on the cost of the vaccine, and a local manufacturer remains to be defined.

At the moment, the health authorities already have an agreement with a US medical equipment company, Becton Dickinson, for the supply of 100 million hypodermic needles and syringes to vaccinate the population.

COLD COMMERCIAL REOPENING ON FIRST DAY OF ACTIVITY

Retail stores, beauty salons and car dealerships have once again raised their blinds, after being shut down for more than four months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Yesterday, the city looked different. There were more cars on the streets and a greater movement of workers in the shopping centers.

At the Multiplaza, at least 10% of the stores opened their doors, the rest remained with the lights off and without movement during the first day of activity.

To enter the mall, visitors have to go through a temperature check and hand disinfection in the alcohol gel dispensers that were placed in all the access doors. The entrance of the people is limited. The visitor must inform which store they are going to find their order that they paid for online.

One of the provisions for the reactivation of the retail trade is that purchases must be made through web pages and other digital means, and under the modality of home delivery, delivery in the parking area or pick-up at the door of the premises commercial.

The measure, however, limits a large number of consumers. “Customers have had the need to buy a computer, the router or the fan, because it was damaged during the quarantine, but they cannot buy, even though they have the funds because they do not use a credit card or do not want to use it out of fear. to a fraud ”, said Naresh Jaswani, manager of Panafoto, Multiplaza branch.

Although online sales can represent only 20% of face-to-face sales in the country, this is the only way for now for consumers and providers of products and services.

“There are many customers who want to buy directly in the store, because they are not used to doing their operations online,” said the Panafoto spokesperson.

Regarding the visits registered during the first day of commercial activity, he said that it was very low, however “you have to wait a couple of days to see how it is reactivated.” He estimates that the Government can eliminate restrictions on mobility as soon as possible so that greater consumption is generated and trade is activated.

At the Albrook Mall, the setting was similar. It was a day of preparations for many businesses. The hallways looked bleak. Visitors, complying with the regulations on the use of masks and social distancing, approached the windows of the department stores to see the merchandise, since for now they cannot enter.

They will evaluate restrictions

In a tour of the Multiplaza shopping center, the vice minister of commerce, Omar Montilla, said that changes in mobility restrictions that limit business activity will depend on the behavior of the population.

“We believe that this should revolve around the reactivation and creation of jobs, however, everything will depend on the behavior of the people who go from home to their jobs or the people who go out to shop. Dialogue is being held at the economic table to extend the hours from 4 to 12 hours ”, he pointed out.

Regarding the opening of restaurants, he said that at least in the cases of shopping centers, the idea is raised that these stores can operate as long as they comply with the protocols ordered by the Ministry of Health.

“It is useless that we have operations open in shopping centers and people have to go out to buy food in food carts that we will not have control over. We prefer that they do it here in the mall and that other people around them can come to buy in the operating restaurants, however, the businesses have to present their protocol ”.

Shopping centers generate about 40 thousand direct jobs and 10 thousand indirect ones. Until last week, 95% of these workers had a suspended employment contract.

COPA AIRLINES APPLIES BIOSECURITY MEASURES ON ALL ITS FLIGHTS

A committee specialized in biosecurity developed the measures in response to the recommendations of the health authorities.

The Panamanian airline Copa Airlines, which now operates with a reduced number of flights due to COVID-19, presented this Monday the disinfection, hygiene and biosecurity protocols that it has implemented to offer a safe environment at each stage of its travels.

A committee specialized in biosafety developed the measures in response to the recommendations of national health authorities and international organizations, Copa reported in a public statement.

These measures take into account “the best practices observed in the industry since the pandemic began,” the company said, noting that “biosecurity begins from home.”

The airline recalled that these measures were tested “successfully in the more than 130 humanitarian operations carried out by Copa in the last five months and are being implemented on the flights that we will operate in August.”

Copa Arlines will make a reduced number of flights starting this August, after the Government of Panama authorized the limited opening of the Tocumen International Airport, the country’s main and an important regional connection center, which has restricted flights internationals by COVID-19.

The Senior Director of Customer Experience, Diani Mizrachi, affirmed that at Copa Airlines “we know that COVID-19 changed the way of traveling and the expectations of our passengers”, and therefore they have taken “all the necessary measures to guarantee the greater security on your next trip with us, because your safety is our top priority. “

The measures include a healthy and safe cabin environment in all Copa Airlines aircraft, through high-efficiency filters (HEPA) that purify up to 99.97% of virus particles and bacteria, similar to a operating room.

A cabin air recirculation system renews the air every 2 to 3 minutes, with a vertical displacement that prevents it from being shared with passengers from the sides and front.

In addition, specialized airline teams are responsible for the thorough hygiene and disinfection of the interior of the aircraft, particularly at points of high contact, using products with a high rate of effectiveness recommended by the authorities.

Also, the use of electrostatic guns allows the disinfectant to adhere even better to difficult-to-access surfaces.

Added to this are rigorous disinfection procedures for all products entering the aircraft throughout the supply chain, as well as a simplified on-board food and beverage service to limit the interaction between crew members and passengers.

Similarly, a new boarding process allows each passenger to put their boarding pass in the scanning device and show their documentation to the staff at the door.

For physical distancing, the airline detailed that protective acrylics have been installed in the counters of airports where it operates, including Tocumen, and signs in the waiting line so that passengers maintain the physical distance established by the health authorities of each country.

Copa Airlines has strengthened the hygiene and disinfection processes at airports, using high-end products recommended by the authorities at counters, service centers, boarding gates and high-touch points at all stages of the travel experience.

In addition, she stressed that the airline’s employees “will be duly protected with masks.”

The National Authority for Transparency and Access to Information (Antai) informed this Sunday, August 16, 2020 that an administrative process will begin for officials who participated yesterday in a party in Dorado Lakes, and used an official vehicle to transport the guests, in full quarantine for the coronavirus.

An administrative process was also initiated against a public servant of the Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning, who, through an audio, demanded that the institution’s officials give “like” to the publications of the minister of that portfolio.

Both investigations are for violations of the Code of Ethics of Public Servants, and depending on the severity of the violations, the appropriate sanctions will be requested, the Antai announced.

The party in Dorado Lake was held in full quarantine at the house of Pedro Ortiz, advisor to the Urban and Home Cleaning Authority (AAUD), which was suspended after neighbors alerted through social networks of what what happened. The Comptroller General of the Republic ordered the immediate retention of the official vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser truck, assigned to Ortiz, and announced sanctions for the driver.

For its part, in the case of Miviot, the audio that circulated on Friday was recorded by the chief of staff of this entity, José Ruiloba, who threatened subordinates to take “respective actions” against officials who do not like the publications of the minister Rogelio Paredes, and those of the President of the Republic Laurentino Cortizo. Then a video circulated in which he apologized.

The general director of Antai, Elsa Fernández Aguilar, reiterated that public servants are obliged to act with prudence, responsibility and always show appropriate behavior, which is not the object of reproach or tarnish the image that society should have regarding its servants. , and the events that occurred yesterday violate all these principles.

Fernández, called for attention to all State officials so that their actions do not jeopardize the purpose of the public function, and especially in the midst of this pandemic, that they make good use of the assets that have been assigned to them and May your behavior be a true example for society.

GOVERNMENT BETS ON THE OPENING OF PROJECTS TO REACTIVATE THE ECONOMY

The Minister of Public Works, Rafael Sabonge, spoke about the importance of the reactivation of important works and the expectations that the Government contemplates, with the launch of these projects whose activity also involves the reactivation of some 4 thousand jobs.

Sabonge stressed that they maintain a lot of optimism, since these 4 thousand people return again to work in formal jobs and to contribute to the Social Security Fund, since due to the pandemic many had to do informal jobs to be able to take their livelihoods to their homes.

The owner guaranteed the safety of workers by noting that in the first projects that were reactivated two months ago, supervision has been maintained and of 1,300 workers, no positive case of COVID-19 was reported.

These are 27 projects that are reactivated and that had the approval of the Ministry of Health, one of them is the expansion of the Pan-American highway to eight lanes, where about 365 jobs would be reactivated and the work will be scheduled little by little just as they were being carried out when the stoppage began.

This week, according to Sabonge, they should also be resuming work on the expansion of the Trans-isthmic road, which currently maintains 80% progress, and which they expect to be completed in the next six months, as well as other projects such as the one in the Pedregal-Gonzalillo highway, which is 88% complete.

“The projects, including the construction of the fourth bridge over the Canal, add more or less about 2.4 billion dollars of investment,” he added.

Project tender

He announced that for next week there will be three specific projects that will be submitted to tender, from August 25 to 27, one of them is the Cinta Costera Tres-Calzada de Amador Interconnection. Two of these projects will be tendered under the “turnkey” modality.

Another of the projects that are contemplated in this tender on August 25, is the construction of the expansion to four lanes of the road that goes from the Arraiján-La Chorrera highway to the port of Vacamonte, which will also have a cycle track and sidewalks.

A NEW STRAIN OF POSSIBLY MORE CONTAGIOUS MUTATED VIRUS IS DISCOVERED

The Philippines detected the strain among random samples of covid-19 in the largest city in its capital region.

Southeast Asia is facing a strain of the new coronavirus that the Philippines, which has the largest outbreak in the region, is studying to see if the mutation makes it more infectious.

The strain, previously seen in other parts of the world and called D614G, was discovered in an outbreak of 45 cases in Malaysia that began with someone who returned from India and violated their 14-day home quarantine. The Philippines detected the strain among random samples of covid-19 in the largest city in its capital region.

The mutation could have “a greater possibility of transmission, but we still do not have enough solid evidence to say that it will happen,” Philippine Undersecretary of Health María Rosario Vergeire said Monday at a virtual press conference.

The mutation has been found in many other countries and has become the predominant variant in Europe and the United States, although the World Health Organization says there is no evidence that the strain leads to more serious disease. The mutation has also been detected in recent outbreaks in China.

There is no epidemiological evidence that the mutation is considerably more infectious than other strains, said Benjamin Cowling, chief of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Hong Kong. “It is more commonly identified now than in the past, suggesting that it might have some kind of competitive advantage over other strains of covid-19,” he noted.

Southeast Asian countries are taking a number of steps to prevent a resurgence while resuming a limited number of trips, and they must deal with people violating quarantine rules after returning from abroad and with false negative test results at borders.

The man who returned from India had tested negative when he arrived in Malaysia. He was later sentenced to five months in prison and fined for violating the quarantine.

Citizen cooperation

“People should be cautious and take more precautions for this strain now found in Malaysia,” wrote the country’s Health Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah in a Facebook post, saying – without citing studies – that the strain it can make it 10 times more infectious. “The cooperation of people is very necessary so that together we can break the chain of infection of the mutation.”

The strain “could be a little more contagious. We still don’t have enough evidence to evaluate that, but there is no evidence that it is much more contagious, ”said Cowling of the University of Hong Kong.

Noor Hisham cautioned that the strain could indicate the possibility that existing vaccine studies are incomplete or ineffective against the mutation, despite a report published in Cell Press that the mutation is unlikely to have a major impact on efficacy. of the vaccines that are currently being developed.

While Malaysia has largely managed to avoid a resurgence of the virus that has affected other parts of the world, the number of new cases found in the country has been increasing. The country reported 26 new cases on Saturday, the highest number since July 28.

Confirmed cases in the Philippines have risen 76% since the end of July to a total of 164,474 as of Monday. The country surpassed Indonesia more than a week ago as the nation with the largest outbreak in Southeast Asia.

Brett’s Comments:

You’ll note immediately as I did, I’m sure, that this math just doesn’t add up.  MINSA will have to come back and clarify how we have 598 new cases and between Monday and Tuesday only go from 82,543 total cases to 82,790, which is only a difference of 247 new cases.  Even 598 seems a bit low from what we’re accustomed to, so personally, I don’t trust any of the data they spit out today.

END NOTES

Here’s an important update with our adopted family Alberto and clan.  I suppose everyone has their ups and downs, but when you’re out of work and trying to support 4 kids and your lovely wife, anything is a big issue.  Alberto needed a tooth extracted recently that had been a problem for him for a few months.  Last week Thursday we got him set up with a good dentist close to his home in Las Garzas and now he’s smiling again… …minus one annoying molar.

His kids are doing good in school.  The one computer we got for him worked wonders and the schedule the kids have is enough for them to take turns using it throughout the day.

The issue with internet was resolved as well.  They got a reasonable connection contract after Cable Onda had to run more lines to where they were.  Alberto was able to convince them once he took the time to get signatures of several others in the neighborhood, all wanting internet access.

The kids are now calling me “Tio Bwett”, which is close enough.  I know it’s “dangerous” getting too attached, but I’m a sucker anyways, so why the hell not?  Uncle Bwett, it is indeed!

Finally, we got Alberto and his family set up with their own bank account as well.  He was using an account from his neighbor to receive donations, but from experience, that could turn out to be a problem right quick if they started having any personal issues between them.  Banco General has a simply system to help anyone open an account.

I know that everyone is looking for and asking for handouts nowadays, but if you can donate, I’d ask that you do.  Literally anything amount will help him and his kids get from week to week.  We’re already sponsoring them with $100.00 per month and the occasional tooth extraction or transportation to go to the bank.  Really, it’s not much to us, but it’s the world to them.

I don’t know if it’s a good idea to put the account information here, but if anyone wants to donate, please send a WhatsApp message to me at 6674-1183 and I’ll send you the account information.

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…  And by all means (unless you’re running for your life to avoid your evil googly-eye chair) STAY HOME!!…
