Flashbacks.  The weekend was full of flashbacks.  It started Saturday morning.  Usually, Saturdays means “sleeping in” (until 8AM – woohoo).  But this Saturday started with a rude awakening.

“Get up!”, she said.  The blackout shades had me confused.  She had me confused.  Sleep had me, well, confused.

“Yeah sure, I have no idea why my alarm didn’t go off.”, I told her.  So, I got up and went to the bathroom.  Something was amiss.  Something was off.  Oh yeah, no sunlight streaming through the window.  “What the hell!?”, I asked her… …or the wall.  Not even the wall responded.  I grabbed some shorts and moved to the living room.

“Good you’re ready.  Coach is online and ready to train.”  It was 5AM.  It started to come back to me.  Last night she said that we were going to train in the morning for having missed training on Friday.  That’s when the first flashback to Basic Training hit me.  0500hr wake-up, formation at 0530hrs and PT for an hour before showers and chow.

“Nope, I’m going back to bed.”  Of all of the useless words that have come out of my mouth, these ranked pretty high.  I knew they meant nothing to her and besides, if I didn’t “train”, it was going to be a bad weekend.

OK, so we trained and now my legs and back were sore.  On to flashback number two…  For a guy who’s supposed to be careful about the strain he puts on his back, I’m certain to have lifted a few tons during the course of the afternoon.  I lived that flashback the entire time, recalling vividly a move I did from one house to another, one life to another, on my own and in a hurry.  Who needs this much damn furniture?  But the day went quick as the shed got cleared out, shop desk was reallocated, beer inventory moved and sorted, potted plants organized, gym gear cleaned and prepped and finally the pantry was… …re-pantried.

Sunday morning, there was a bit of rustling going on in the room adjoining ours, also commonly known as “Sayira’s closet”.

“It better be after 0500hrs, Titi Linda”, that’s how I refer to Queen Sayira when I want something from her.  In this case, to be less scandalous with her rustling.

“We’re painting today.”, she responded.

I opened an eye to see if, 1. I was actually dreaming, and 2. Searching for any sign of the sun peaking around the curtains or under a door.  I could tell that I wasn’t sleeping and daylight had already crept in.

“I didn’t know you kept the paint in your closet, but if it is, it will be in the third drawer with all of the other hundreds of oddities you keep there.”  I knew there wasn’t any paint there, but what I didn’t know was whether or not she was serious.

“Get up, funny guy, it’s almost 7AM.”, she answered totally miffed by my words.

“You know, God requires that we get at least one day off per week.  It’s law and I’m in no position to go against God’s law, especially not after yesterday’s slave labor you put me through.”, I said.

Then she came out of her safe zone, looked right at me and said, “God loves you but is not happy with you right now.”

Holy crap, she said that so seriously, my heart stopped.

“God doesn’t appreciate lazy people and you’re just trying to be lazy.”

And that’s when my third flashback hit me.  My beautiful, wonderful mom, some 35 years ago walked into my room around noon on a Sunday morning and with the most loving, yet serious tone told me exactly the same thing.  (Except Mom said it in English.)  Mom said it so softly and with so much care to get her point across that I think that was the last time I slept until noon on a Sunday for the rest of my life and that definitely included yesterday.

Have a great week everyone.

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS

Yoli’s Summary

A few days after the completion of the human test of the vaccine candidate against COVID-19, the questions around palliatives to mitigate the symptoms of the disease continue, especially those that have lit the fuse of the controversy (Chlorine Dioxide ).

It is known that, in addition to medications, people’s immune systems have to be strengthened to cope with the symptoms of the new coronavirus.

How do I know how strong my immune system is?

This question is answered by the public health specialist, Elmer Huerta, who also assured that with a few simple questions it was possible to know how people’s defenses are.

“We do a basic blood test, in which we are going to analyze the proteins in the blood and within these there are two large subtypes: albumins and the other globulins, the latter give us an idea of how strong that person’s system is. The rest is obtained from the questions, “explained the doctor.

Along these lines, Dr. Elmer Huerta assured that there are special patients who have to undergo other, more specific examinations.

Immune system.

“If the patient has nothing clinically and his blood test reveals that the globulins are normal, that’s the end (…) There are special patients, who have problems in their immunity, they are seen by immunologists, allergists. to ask for special tests, of the types of immunoglobulins …. “, explained the specialist.

Finally, the specialist made it clear that in most people it is enough to just talk with the doctor and have a blood test to know how their immune system is.

THE COMPLETE PLAN FOR A GRADUAL REACTIVATION FOR TOURIST ACTIVITIES IN PANAMA IS PRESENTED

ATP presents to the National Tourism Council a complete plan for the reactivation of tourism in Panama.

The Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP) presented to the National Tourism Council (CNT), a complete program of gradual reactivation for tourism activities in the country.

The CNT agreed to instruct the general administrator of the ATP, Iván Eskildsen, to negotiate before the corresponding authorities the approval of the gradual reopening plan, which designates specific dates of operation for specific activities and according to their characteristics, taking into account the biosafety protocols issued by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Labor

Through a resolution approved unanimously during an extraordinary meeting held on August 20, financial support is necessary for the survival and reactivation of companies in the sector, and the achievement of budget items for the creation of a tourist voucher to improve offers that stimulate demand.

Among the proposals presented to the CNT, access to bank financing, through support programs with guarantees, such as the one proposed by the Inter-American Development Bank, which must be assessed by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, stands out.

“We are working shoulder to shoulder with the private sector, sharing the same responsibility with the survival of the industry and with the same commitment to safety and health. We embrace the same hope that together we will succeed”, expressed about this initiative Eskildsen.

“The gradual reopening plan worked in conjunction with the National Chamber of Tourism (Camtur) and other private sector associations was divided into three phases based on the different tourist activities and includes as a fundamental axis, in a second phase, the reopening of airports for national and international flights with mandatory application of the PCR test for passengers, with the idea that they are not obliged to comply with quarantine if the test is negative ”, detailed a statement from the ATP.

The announcement of the opening of the country’s airports will allow airlines, agencies and travelers to plan operations for the post-pandemic scenario in the short and medium term.

According to Jorge García Icaza, president of the CNT, “to reactivate tourism it is urgent to set a date for the total reopening of the airports as soon as possible, since the airlines need accurate information to organize their commercial routes.”

For the businessman, tourism is one of the most important sectors of the economy that before the pandemic generated a tourist expenditure of about 7 billion dollars, in addition to representing 140,000 jobs, both direct and indirect. On the other hand, he indicated that without airlines it is impossible to reactivate tourism.

They highlight that the proposals for the reactivation of tourism respond to the 18-month Post-COVID Strategic Plan, announced by the ATP last June, with three fundamental lines of operation: financial support, training and stimulation of demand.

“Not only is tourism one of the sectors most seriously affected by the pandemic (according to CAMTUR, losses of B / .12 million a day are recorded), but it is probably the sector that will take the longest to reactivate due to the time it will take to tourists regain confidence in traveling, “says the ATP.

In this sense, the ATP proposed to the CNT urgent measures to safeguard as many jobs and tourism infrastructure as possible and to encourage new initiatives.

For his part, Ernesto Orillac, president of Camtur, indicated that “for our sector it is important to obtain the support of the state to position ourselves firmly against our neighbors and direct competitors, who have already implemented measures to support the sector for its reactivation.”

He added that the Tocumen International Airport is important to reactivate it, since, like the Panama Canal, they are important assets that place the country in an excellent strategic position, since 85 or 90 percent of the country’s visitors enter through the airport. Tourism has gone through very difficult times this year and probably next year as well, but we are going to recover little by little ”.

It should be noted that the new strategies contemplated in the Master Plan for Sustainable Tourism 2020-2025 will be presented for approval by the CNT next September. The CNT, which is the highest management and consultation body in the sector and is made up of 5 representatives from the public sector and 4 from the private sector (proposed by Camtur).

PRESIDENT OF NURSES CALLS TO SUPPORT PROTEST ACTIONS STARTING MONDAY

Despite the meetings, notes, letters and communications, where the National Association of Nurses of Panama (ANEP), has expressed “all their concerns and situations”, they do not feel the answers they need arrive.

That is why, starting this Monday, August 24, they will begin with a day of “pickets” in the periphery of the different health institutions, between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., reiterated Ana Reyes de Serrano, current president of ANEP.

Nursing rarely takes to the streets, but now it is urgent to make visible and seek the answers,” Reyes said in a video posted on ANEP’s social networks.

As Reyes de Serrano explained, they do not feel safe in health facilities, in the middle of the battle against COVID-19, because they do not have all the necessary protective equipment.

On the other hand, there are nurses with three-month contracts who have not paid a single fortnight, so remember that everyone who works does so because they need the money to meet their needs.

In Panama, in 48 hours four nurses died from COVID-19, three active and in service and one who was retired. But there are others who are in serious condition due to the virus.

SCIENTISTS ASK FOR PERMISSIONS TO IMPORT VACCINES

According to the World Health Organization, there are 165 candidate vaccines in development, of which 29 are in clinical phases in humans (phases 1-3).

The Covid-19 Vaccine Research Consortium, made up of the Cevaxin Research Center and the Institute for Scientific Research and High Technology Services (Indicasat-AIP), has requested permits from the National Directorate of Pharmacy and Drugs of the Ministry of Health for the importation of the German CureVac vaccine and the necessary supplies to start clinical trials at the end of August.

This was explained by Xavier Sáez-Llorens, infectologist and member of the Covid-19 Vaccine Research Consortium, who explained that the study of the CureVac vaccine is carried out in phase 1 in Germany and Belgium, and in phase 2 in Brazil, Peru and Panama.

The German vaccine is not the only one that will be studied in Panama, but also that of the Chinese company Clover Biopharmaceuticals, which has an alliance with GlaxoSmithKline and Dynavax. The study is scheduled for September.

Panama will begin trials of vaccine against Covid-19

At the end of this month of August, Panama will begin clinical trials of vaccines against the Covid-19 disease, which emerged in December 2019 in the city of Wuhan, in China.

The first vaccine to be studied in phase 2 is from the German company CureVac, after the National Research Bioethics Committee (CNBI) – an autonomous entity institutionally attached to the Ministry of Health (Minsa) – recently approved the protocol for investigation.

Vaccine studies are divided into five phases: one preclinical in the laboratory and four clinical in humans. In phase two, between 100 and a thousand people participate.

This vaccine is part of the Covax initiative, designed by the World Health Organization to ensure equitable global access to vaccines for Covid-19.

The Covid-19 Vaccine Research Consortium, made up of the Cevaxin Research Center and the Institute for Scientific Research and High Technology Services (Indicasat-AIP), is in charge of carrying out these clinical trials, after being established with The purpose of channeling and prioritizing the initiatives to develop a vaccine against Covid-19 in the country.

Xavier Sáez-Llorens, infectologist and member of the Covid-19 Vaccine Research Consortium, explained that the CureVac vaccine study is being carried out in phase 1 in Germany and Belgium, and in phase 2 in Brazil, Peru and Panama.

He added that 250 volunteers of two age groups are required for the clinical trial: between 18 and 60 years of age, and those over 60 years of age who have not had Covid-19 previously and are healthy. There are more than 600 people who have shown interest in participating in the study (to participate you can call the numbers 6983-2909 and 6997-1068).

How are vaccines and their study phases approved?

Another clinical trial

The German vaccine is not the only one that will be tested in Panama; there is also the vaccine from Chinese biotech company Clover Biopharmaceuticals, which has an alliance with GlaxoSmithKline and Dynavax.

The Clover Biopharmaceuticals company has selected Australia and Panama for its phase 1 and 2 studies. However, the research protocol must be reviewed and approved by the General Directorate of Public Health of the Minsa and the Bioethics Committee before its execution, which It is scheduled for next September.

Clinical trials on vaccines against Covid-19 do not represent a cost for the country, since they are financed by pharmaceutical companies and by non-governmental (non-profit) organizations.

The infectologist and researcher affirmed that, if both vaccines are safe and induce adequate immunity, phase 3 of the study will also be carried out in Panama, in thousands of subjects.

He recalled that clinical research studies are currently very rigorous activities and regulated by ethical and independent auditing bodies that ensure the well-being of the participants, and that the benefits far outweigh the potential risks.

“The subjects that participate do so voluntarily and receive personalized medical attention 24/7, and being able to participate in scientific research is considered a basic human right. It is much more risky for a population to undergo a vaccine that has not been rigorously studied in clinical trials, ”said Sáez-Llorens.

Rehearsal with people

Argentina Ying, president of the CNBI, said that all the bioethics committees guarantee that in the research process that requires the participation of people, the risks are not above the benefits and that human rights are respected.

She reminded the population that vaccines, historically, have saved many lives.

Panamanian scientists argue that the participation of people in clinical trials is voluntary. First, the informed consent process is carried out, in which the study is explained, all the activities that will be developed, the benefits and risks and any questions that the potential participant may have are answered, until everything is clear.

After completing this process and signing the consent, the inclusion and exclusion criteria are reviewed, in which the doctor verifies the health condition of the volunteer and confirms that they meet all the criteria to participate.

Eduardo Ortega-Barría, advisor to the Covid-19 Vaccine Research Consortium and who will assume the position of National Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation in January 2021, said that these studies allow the country to obtain safety and immunogenicity data in the population, to be sure that their behavior is similar in other parts of the world.

Ortega-Barría said that it also helps, as a country, to know these products before they are licensed, and if a study of large dimensions is carried out, it could impact the behavior of the pandemic in our country; for example, reducing the number of cases and deaths.

During the last 20 years, Panamanian researchers and institutions have participated in multiple scientific studies to evaluate the efficacy and safety of vaccines, including those for rotavirus, influenza, human papillomavirus (HPV), pneumococcus, meningococcus, dengue fever and poliomyelitis.

The results of these studies have resulted in the inclusion of vaccines in the immunization system of various countries globally and in the region.

GORGAS WILL VALIDATE TESTS IN SALIVA TO DETECT THE CORONAVIRUS

PCR sample collection form in saliva.

Test

In order to strengthen the diagnostic capacity of the Covid-19 disease in the country, it is planned to apply polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests in saliva to detect the presence of the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

This was reported by Juan Miguel Pascale, director of the Gorgas Commemorative Institute for Health Studies (Icges), at the scientific conference for the 92-year anniversary of the entity. Pascale said that it is important to strengthen the network of molecular biology diagnostic laboratories so that they can even sequence virus genomes.

Saliva tests will be validated in sensitivity and specificity to later join tests such as nasopharyngeal PCR and antigen.

In fact, a study by the Yale University School of Public Health published in MedRxiv –which is in the pre-printing phase– argues that taking samples using nasopharyngeal swabs presents a series of difficulties, such as low sensitivity , increased risks of exposure to the disease for healthcare professionals, the global shortage of swabs and the need for more effective protective equipment.

The study indicates that saliva is a promising candidate for the diagnosis of Covid-19, because its collection is minimally invasive and has shown a sensitivity comparable to nasopharyngeal swabs in the detection of other respiratory viruses, including other coronaviruses, according to previous studies.

In addition, recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), of the United States, approved the saliva test for the detection of Covid-19 and thus advance in the face of the pandemic.

This is the SalivaDirect test –because there are already four–, authorized for emergency use by the FDA on August 15, and which was developed by researchers at Yale University in the United States.

Unlike other tests that require specialized supplies, the SalivaDirect test does not require a specific swab or collection device. It can also be used with reagents from various vendors, the Yale researchers say.

Increased evidence

Sandra López Vergés, head of the department of Virology and Biotechnology at Icges, explained that currently the diagnostic network for PCR tests is made up of 20 laboratories. It did not specify which laboratories perform antigen testing.

The scientist said that the department she directs has always been dedicated to the diagnosis, surveillance and investigation of all the viruses that circulate in the country, but the diagnostic response to the Covid-19 disease already takes 90% of their time.

She added that the number of samples they receive from Covid-19 on a daily basis is what they received in six months for surveillance for influenza and all respiratory viruses combined.

In the country, between 4,000 and 5,000 diagnostic tests have been carried out in the last days of the week, including nasopharyngeal and antigen PCR tests.

Molecular tests, such as PCR tests, detect the genetic material of the virus, and antigen tests detect specific proteins on the surface of the virus.

CLOSE TO 600 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN MADE AVAILABLE FOR TESTING THE VACCINE AGAINST COVID-19 IN PANAMA

They will begin the study by the end of next week, almost at the end of August, from there the subjects that have been listed will be scheduled.

Although only 250 people will be able to register for the trial of the vaccine from Germany in our country to combat COVID-19, between about 500 to 600 people have already made themselves available for testing.

To date, Panama registers a total of 83,754 positive cases of COVID-19, of which 23,653 are active cases and a total of 1,827 people have died due to the virus.

According to the researcher and infectologist Xavier Sáez Llorens, after the announcement was posted, around 600 people have registered for the vaccine trials that will be carried out in the coming days.

The infectologist stressed that there are many health personnel who are interested, that they are risk personnel and that they know very well what research is, among them are doctors and nurses as well.

“First they have to meet the age they must be over 18 years old, they have to be healthy, not have chronic diseases, and they will be evaluated by a doctor to see if they meet the conditions. In addition, there is a list of inclusion and exclusion criteria that have to do with diseases that are detected with drugs that are taken, ”explained Sáez Llorens to Telemetro Reporta.

He explained that there is a list of activities that the subjects have to comply with that include vaccinations and periodic blood draws for a period of one year.

The authorization of pharmacies and drugs is awaited in order to import vaccines and research supplies.

“Our idea is to start the study by the end of next week, almost at the end of August, from there the subjects who have been listed will be scheduled and will be scheduled to avoid crowds,” said the infectologist.

He also indicated that due to ethical issues, the researchers unfortunately cannot receive the vaccine, which is why he will not be one of the candidates to participate as personnel for the study of the vaccine.

“I would be the first to get vaccinated because I am a person at risk and I firmly believe in the vaccine and I would be the first to register you, but for ethical reasons it is completely prohibited,” he said.

For its part, the Ministry of Health has set up an advisory team that is dedicated to downloading information, searching for it, analyzing it, processing it and seeing the characteristics of each of the vaccines that are being proposed worldwide, to pass on the information that allows us to advise and guide them in this regard.

There is another inter-institutional team that is also working together with Senacyt, which consists of a group of professionals, scientists and researchers in the field of vaccines, which has been called the Consortium for Vaccine Research.

This consortium is going to dedicate itself to the operationalization of the different vaccines that are going to be used in Panama, then the scientific analysis of both the vaccine task table and the other team to guide and later provide information on which is the best. vaccine that the National Government must access to the country.

MINSA MASSIFIES THE TESTS; ASYMPTOMATICS ARE TESTED AS WELL

Applying as many tests as possible for Covid-19, even to those who do not have symptoms, is the new strategy to try to control the pandemic.

The Regional Directorate of San Miguelito installed yesterday the “express swab”, which allows asymptomatic and symptomatic people to undergo tests, whether they go by car or not.

In addition, this week the country surpassed the barrier of 5,000 tests in one day for the first time, a trend that according to the Pan American Health Organization is “on the rise”, since in April and May there were about a thousand per day, on average.

The former Minister of Health and member of the Health Advisory Council, Francisco Sánchez Cárdenas, pointed out that the strategy in San Miguelito seeks to swab as many people as possible, whether they have symptoms or not, since the population is afraid to go to hospitals. “There is no choice but to go to the streets to look for them,” he said.

The Epidemiology report of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) shows that 4,600 tests were carried out yesterday, for a percentage of positivity of 17.8%.

In addition, 817 new cases and 15 new deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. With these figures, the accumulated infections in the country add up to 84,392, of which 1,859 correspond to deceased persons.

Covid-19: Health applies test to asymptomatic

In addition to exceeding the barrier of 4,000 to 5,000 daily tests, Health institutions adopted as a new strategy to apply the tests to people who do not have symptoms of Covid-19, better known as asymptomatic.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Health (Minsa), through its regional San Miguelito, implemented the “express swab” in the area of the Great Station, where the tests will be carried out from Monday to Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Francisco Sánchez Cárdenas, a member of the Health Advisory Council, indicated that we must continue to test massively, since that will make a big difference in terms of identifying cases and cutting transmission.

Health authorities in San Miguelito implement the ‘express swab’ strategy in the Gran Estación.

“To be sure that nothing out of the ordinary happens during the economic opening, you have to keep looking for positive cases and isolate them,” he said.

According to Sánchez Cárdenas, although they previously had some problems with the amount of tests they carried out, at the moment they do have the capacity to do between 4,000 and 5,000 per day.

In this context, he highlighted what happened in San Miguelito, where they began to practice swabs both to people who have symptoms and to those who do not.

As noted, one of the characteristics of Covid-19 is that many people have symptoms up to five or six days after they were infected and, while they are not diagnosed, they tend to infect their relatives and other close friends.

“It has to be done to everyone, because right now the population is afraid to go to hospitals, polyclinics and health centers. There is no other choice but to go looking for them in the streets, ”she remarked.

One of those who suggested last week “changing the strategy” regarding the application of swabs was the dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Panama, Enrique Mendoza, who said that recent scientific studies from the United States so they indicate.

“Until now, the strategy has been to apply the test to patients who have symptoms, but there are a large number of people who do not have symptoms and who may have the virus. In addition, the results of the tests are delivered days after they were performed and, while that happens, the person could infect their close circle, ”said Mendoza.

The evolution of the tests

The latest report from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), dated August 17, indicates that there is an “increasing trend” in tests.

For example, from April 8 to May 19, around a thousand tests were carried out per day, and from the first week of June it was increased to more than 2,000 a day. Subsequently, in July an average of 2,866 tests were processed each day, and until August 15 there were 3,000 a day.

In addition, this week, for the first time, more than 5,000 tests were applied daily, with a percentage of positivity of just over 16%. To get an idea, in countries that have improved their rates on Covid-19, the percentage of positivity is 10% or less.

For pediatric infectologist Javier Nieto, beyond meeting the goal of 5,000 daily tests, the most important thing is to follow up on each of the positives and their contacts. “It is useless to do 5 thousand tests if you do not do the proper quarantine,” he explained.

According to Nieto, the plan should be to bring the percentage of positivity as low as possible and this is achieved by strengthening the traceability strategy that is currently being developed.

Regarding the loosening that is coming from Monday, Nieto appealed to citizen responsibility and self-care of each person. “Right now, the only measures that will keep us healthy are distancing ourselves and using personal protective equipment, such as a mask,” he warned.

Public Health specialist Jorge Luis Prosperi stated that the country is approaching the goal of 10% positivity, but the effort must be maintained, because there are many positive citizens. “People who are probably asymptomatic, we have not detected them, do not keep personal protection measures and, without knowing it, spread the virus on the streets, at work and at home. We have not reached the average of 4 thousand daily tests, but we are getting closer, “he said.

Metropolitan region

The Metropolitan Health Region is the one that reports the highest number of cases, according to the statistical reports of the Minsa. Given this, the director of this Health region, Israel Cedeño, explained that samples are being taken from the entire family – even if all its members do not present symptoms – when someone is identified as positive.

STARTING MONDAY SOME MEASURES WILL CHANGE IN THE COLLECTIVE AND SELECTIVE TRANSPORTATION

For now, the hours and days that taxi drivers go to work are maintained by the termination of the license plate number.

No new decision has been made in this regard, but the new measures will be reported by Sunday. One of the most notable changes in the Metrobús will be in the schedules.

From Monday to Saturday they will operate from 4:00 in the morning to 12:00 midnight on trunk and complementary routes and the Pacora- Corredor route.

While in the corridors they will remain operating only from 4:00 to 8:00 in the morning. On Sundays of total quarantine, the hours will be from 5:00 to 8:00 in the morning and from 2:00 in the afternoon to 12:00 midnight in the trunk and complementary services and the Pacora corridor route.

Inside the buses a capacity of 50% of the passengers will be allowed, which means that there will be 45 people wearing masks since all the signs with crosses that had been placed on the chairs were eliminated to disable those seats in order to establish the physical distancing, it has now been decided that most.

PFIZER’S VACCINE IS HEADING FOR ITS REGULATORY REVIEW IN OCTOBER

Pfizer and BioNTech SE announced that the Covid-19 vaccine they are developing together is on the right track for regulatory review as early as October, after they released additional data from a preliminary phase study.

The companies noted that the vaccine was well tolerated with mild to moderate fever in less than 20% of the volunteers. The companies continue to analyze data from phase 1 trials in the United States and Germany, they reported in a statement.

Confirmation of its October target, which was originally announced last month, contributed to a brief rally in S&P 500 futures on Friday as part of a series of encouraging news about vaccine development that has the potential to end the threat of confinement, so damaging to the economy.

The deadline would make the vaccine one of the fastest-advancing in the world. Some analysts hope that a vaccine will be approved for use in November in the United States, a move that could give President Donald Trump a new point in the election.

Pfizer and BioNTech last month closed a $ 2 billion deal to supply 100 million initial doses of the vaccine to the United States. Governments around the world are trying to secure supplies of still experimental vaccines in the hopes of stabilizing local economies and stemming the spread of the virus that has claimed nearly 800,000 lives around the world.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is tentatively planning an advisory panel that would meet Oct. 22 to discuss a Covid-19 vaccine, though it has not specified which vaccines, or how many, will be tested.

Some of the fast-moving efforts around the world have begun evaluating efficacy in the final phase of testing, paving the way for regulatory approval.

Russia this month approved a vaccine dubbed Sputnik V, developed by Moscow’s Gamaleya Institute and Russia’s sovereign fund for direct investment, and plans to roll it out widely in October, though the vaccine is still in the midst of human testing.

The measure has sparked criticism from the scientific community over concerns that widespread vaccination will be carried out given that there is still no clarity on the compound’s safety profile.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION EXPECTS TO END THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN ‘LESS THAN TWO YEARS’

In the world, 22.7 million cases of Covid-19 have been reported until this Friday.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said this Friday, August 21, that it expects the Covid-19 pandemic to last “less than two years” and be less long-lived than the Spanish flu of 1918 that caused tens of millions of deaths in two years.

“We hope to end this pandemic in less than two years. Above all, if we manage to unite our efforts (…) and use the available resources to the maximum and hope that we can have supplementary tools such as vaccines, I think that we will be able to end it with a shorter term than that of the 1918 flu ” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a news conference.

Children over 12 years old should wear masks like adults to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, according to WHO recommendations published on Friday.

The WHO “recommends wearing a mask for children from 12 years of age in the same conditions as adults, particularly when they cannot guarantee a distance of at least one meter from others and if transmission is generalized in the area where question”.

END NOTES

I spotted one solitary flower that came up due to me neglecting an area that I would normally mow.  Instead, we’ve been letting that area come up due to an especially wet couple of months and poor lawn growth.

Any help identifying it?

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…  And by all means (unless you’re out buying a botanical book to help me figure out what plant this is) STAY HOME!!…
