Wednesday, September 09, 2020

Well, this weekend, the both of them got a little too rambunctious and through a fit of anger between the two of them, they committed a very clear and concise “on purpose” that couldn’t go unpunished.  Through technology, we are blessed through easier forms of communications but we’re also cursed with the addiction these new fangled contraptions can cause.  Like many kids these days, ours are hooked.  These spoiled brats…oops, I meant, “darling specimens of love and purity”…  have any number toys that they absolutely HAD to have for Christmas or birthdays or whatever and these two dummies went out of our ways to get them in the name of the holiday spirit.  (In case you didn’t see, I was pointing to the Queen and I while referring to “these two dummies”.)

They were online playing games as usual.  Apparently, Brandon has gotten pretty good and has even gone to the extent of “studying” how to do special attack moves and whatnot to best his older and more experienced brother.  Well, sometime between last weekend and this weekend, Brandon has begun to flat out destroy his older brother more times than Brett Junior would care for.  “Brandon, knock it off, I was trying to put the thing on the thing.  You don’t have to ALWAYS kill me.”  I usually just chuckle as I listen to them; they laugh, argue, get happy again, get even angrier than before, rinse and repeat.  It’s usually harmless kid stuff, but this time I knew I needed to intervene.

“Why did you DO THAT!?”, Junior at his little brother.

“Because you make it so easy for me.”, replied an overly cocky Brandon.

“This isn’t fun anymore.”, said a frustrated Junior.

“Well, maybe, just maybe, if you actually learned how to play the game, you wouldn’t suck and….”, Brandon got carried away…

I knew that even my ideally calm boy, the one who only speaks when direly necessary, wasn’t going to let that stay bottled up.  My extrasensory paternal perception kicked in and I could “see” as Brett Junior stood up, white-knuckled fists clenched and heading straight towards his unsuspecting little brother.  “Oh crap!” I thought to myself, time to save the little one.  But, it all happened too fast.  “Brett, no!” a concerned Brandon warned.  “Smack!”  Then a “Oh yeah!?  Crack!”  “Pow!” (muffled sounds of struggle) and then finally “Smash!”  With that, in unison, they both uttered a defeated “Oh no!”.

Enter dad.

Envision, if you will, a small bedroom with a single bed, curtains fallen to one side, blankets and pillows in a tussle of their own, one boy kneeling on the bed and the other standing adjacent, both agitated and both with eyes fixed on a flickering laptop freshly toppled to the floor and most definitely in distress.

Item in severe distress

For me, time slowed to a trickle…  muscles tensed, sweat beaded, blood rushed, and then a sudden warmth all over and not the good kind.  The door having been ajar, the boys were yet aware of my arrival until I spoke.  “So?”, I asked steadily.  In a beautifully pristine yet uncoordinated slow motion, their eyes widened as they turned their attention from the trouble they made to the trouble they were about to receive.  I could almost hear their hearts as they competed further, both trying to pound their ways out of their chests.  They became flush.

“What…  Happened?…”  I tried to remain calm.  A flourish of poor excuses mixed with finger pointing and gobs of tears spewed forth from the both of them.  “ENOUGH!”, I bellowed.  Then, silence.  My “poor excuse translator” that I had bio-installed when my daughter was just 5 years old was still working perfectly; that was 23 years ago.  I had enough information to formulate my next words and those words were a sarcastically mellow, “Gentlemen, you’re grounded.”

In our home, being “grounded” only means, “you’re in deep doodoo”.  It doesn’t mean just one particular thing.  There’s not mathematical system to the grounding either.  The groundingness just comes to me the same way an artist knows how to stroke the canvass.  Yes, it’s an art.  A grounding needs to be directly proportionate to the offense.  The elements presented in this case are, “excessive anger”, “broken computer/technology”, “poor sportsmanship”, “messy bedroom”, “poor excuses”.  The punishment of the grounding needed to fit the crimes.

After an hour of the two of them apologizing profusely and sincerely, mostly in an attempt to butter up the judge, I’d come to my verdict.  “Gentlemen, given the evidence witnessed by me in part, I’ve balanced your options carefully and come to my conclusions.  It is apparent that I have no other choice but to divest you of all things electronic until such time that the item in distress is repaired to its proper state.  Furthermore, you both, each, are to be charged with 1 hour of hard labor for every $3.00 it costs to repair said item in distress.”

Brandon cried and Brett Jr just spoke a soft, “Si, papa.”  It broke my heart.  I didn’t take away all of their toys, just any access to the internet, electronic games of all forms and the use of our cell phones.  I already knew that this was going to take two weeks as my friend Ingrid Neuman had already quoted $145.00 for the new screen and labor and the parts will arrive on the 18th, more or less.  With that, I rounded it up to $150 and they both owed me 50 hours of work.

What I didn’t know was how awesome this grounding was going to be for them.  Brandon pulled out his “Qixels 3D” and Brett rediscovered his wide array of “Bey Blades”.  After only 4 days, they’ve taken out their bikes to ride, old stuffed animals, board games and any number of made up games to play outside.  I don’t know if it would be selfish of me, but they may never get their electronics crap back.

Tortured child, forced to create marvelous handy-craft wonders.
Our distraught offspring straining to endure the pains of reliving such horrid memories of days past.

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS

Yoli’s Summary

A team of experts on food contamination says it is highly unlikely that food is a source of Covid-19 transmission.

The International Commission on Microbiological Specifications for Foods (ICMSF) looked at the evidence that coronavirus might be carried on food or its packing and found very little.

Their finding mirrors earlier reporting from the US Food and Drug Administration that there is no real risk of getting the virus that causes Covid-19 from food or food packaging.

“To date, there has not been any evidence that food, food packaging or food handling is a source or important transmission route for SARS-CoV-2 resulting in Covid-19,” the organization said in a statement.

“There are no foods that should be considered a risk or warrant consideration as a vector for SARS-CoV-2.”

While it is possible that people could eat something contaminated with the virus and become infected that way, it’s never been seen to have happened, they said.

However, it is still prudent to emphasize good food hygiene practices, the group said.

While some countries have restricted food imports, tested imported products or asked companies to state their products are coronavirus-free, the ICMSF says none of this is necessary.

Experts say there is no need to clean groceries

“The focus for food businesses should be on protecting food workers, consumers and restaurant patrons from becoming infected by person-to-person SARS-CoV-2 spread,” they wrote.

When concerns over food contamination began

The concern over virus transmission via surfaces began in late March after a study published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine.

“What the study showed is that under certain conditions in the laboratory, which are obviously kind of artificial, SARS-CoV-2 is detectable for up to three hours in aerosols, up to four hours on copper, up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to two to three days on plastic and stainless steel,” said Jamie Lloyd-Smith, a scientist who studied how long SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, might remain on various surfaces.

But the study did not account for other factors that could help to inactivate the virus, such as sunlight or disinfectants, or look at varying levels of virus, Lloyd-Smith said.

Most experts agree that the most important thing is washing your hands, social distancing, and wearing masks are the best ways to ensure safety and spread of infection.

PANAMA ATTEMPTS NORMALITY WITH CAUTION AFTER SIX MONTHS OF PANDEMIC

Panama is cautiously returning to normality after six months of pandemic

Panama enters its sixth month of pandemic, promoting the economic reopening after the improvement in the COVID-19 indicators with a cautious optimism from the authorities, which highlight the good hospital capacity to face possible spikes in cases of the disease.

With 4.2 million inhabitants, Panama accumulates 97,043 confirmed infections and 2,086 deaths from COVID-19 in 183 days of the pandemic, and since last June it has been facing a rout of cases that seems to be subsiding, which encouraged the restart of the program gradual reopening of the beaten national economy.

A report from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) indicated that until last August 30, Panama registered “the highest incidence among the countries of the Americas, of 2,176.6 infected per 100,000 inhabitants, occupying the first place this week above the average rate for the region of 1,278.7 per 100,000 inhabitants “.

“The projections are good, the numbers continue to decrease, the installed capacity in terms of beds (in hospitals) is 50% nationwide, that gives us security,” said the Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, while distributing this morning masks and face masks in a large metro station in the capital.

But if the numbers of contagions “begin to rise and the indicators are damaged, we will have to endure and possibly go back. All the countries that open increase the numbers a little,” Sucre said.

Reopening

Starting this Monday, the construction and related sectors, companies in the special economic zone of Panama Pacifico, located on the outskirts of the capital, those in the Colon Free Zone, the largest in the continent, as well as tailor shops can restart. , shoe stores, dressmakers and car washes. “What is done in construction starting today will show us the way to reopen other activities,” said the Panamanian president, Laurentino Cortizo, who asked workers and businessmen in the sector “to intensify the use of the mask , physical distancing and hand washing “.

The president of the Construction Chamber, Jorge Lara, said that they expect some 15,000 construction workers to gradually reincorporate in the next two weeks, a neuralgic sector of Panama’s economy that has been in sharp decline for several years.

The reactivation schedule that started this Monday establishes each week the opening of sectors and the gradual lifting of the mobility restriction measures until October 12, when the night curfew will be canceled and international aviation and international aviation will be reopened. hotels, among others. But the private sector has criticized the schedule for finding it very slow and because the situation in some sectors is so serious after almost six months closed that “they cannot go another week without operating,” as stated by the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture. of Panama (CCIAP).

Economy

Panama’s economy, based on the services and logistics sector, will fall by 9% in 2020 according to government data, which expects the unemployment rate to climb to between 20% and 25% and the informality rate to 55%, from 7.1% and 45% prior to the pandemic, respectively. The Cortizo Government has acquired debt and rebuilt the national budget in search of funds to promote programs for micro, small and medium enterprises (Mypime) and to pay for a social assistance plan that distributes a bonus of $ 100 per month and bags of food.

Unions criticize state aid as insufficient and irregular, while analysts say that the need faced by hundreds of thousands of families who have been left without a livelihood or who have always depended on the informal market has torpedoed the objective of the strong and prolonged measures restriction to mobility to keep people at home. But this new reopening brings light to merchants such as Nuncio Buglione, 56, who this Monday opened his shoe store in the Panamanian capital. “We have started today hoping that things will improve, that we can have a little movement” after more than five closed months in which debts have been “accumulated (…) we hope that things can be much better and that do not back down everything we started, “the merchant told EFE Agency.

VACCINE TRIALS AGAINST COVID-19 IN PANAMA DELAYED DUE TO LACK OF FLIGHTS

About 250 volunteers are expected to participate in the trial

The coronavirus vaccines that will be tested in Panama have not yet arrived, due to irregularities in air transport.

According to a statement from the Cevaxin research center, in charge of the study, the irregularity of the flights has delayed the arrival of this biological product on national soil, highly sensitive to temperature changes.

“These vaccines must be kept in a frozen state, in this particular case at a temperature of less than 80 degrees Celsius. For their safe transport they are packed in dry ice covers, which must be periodically replaced, in order to preserve them at all times. the right temperature “, reads the statement.

Despite the shortage of commercial flights and airline restrictions to transport certain cargo, those responsible for the study have ensured that the cargo is handled by trained personnel.

The infectologist Xavier Saéz-Llorens, aware of the investigations, confirmed through his Twitter account the problems registered, which have prevented the start of the study.

Cevaxin added that, in the meantime, they continue with the recruitment phase of the volunteers who will participate in the project.

The vaccines that will be studied in Panama are developed by the German company CureVac and are in phase II.

At this stage the safety, immunogenicity and appropriate doses to be applied will be determined.

According to the health website, this type of study lasts 13 months, but it is expected to shorten the time according to the global trend, due to the pandemic.

The researchers project by the end of October to have information that will allow them to advance towards phase III.

CHINA VACCINES ‘HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS’ WITHOUT ISSUES, ACCORDING TO A COMPANY MANAGER

CNBG vaccines are undergoing phase three trials in various countries such as Argentina, Peru, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco or Jordan

China has already used at least two experimental vaccines against COVID-19 in “hundreds of thousands of Chinese” who have neither contracted the virus nor have had adverse side effects, said a director of a biotechnology company quoted today by the local press.

“Hundreds of thousands (of people) have been vaccinated and none have shown any obvious adverse effects or been infected,” said the secretary of the Commission for the Inspection of Discipline – the name in China received by the anti-corruption organs of the Communist Party. – from the China National Biotechnology Group (CNBG), Zhou Song, in an interview with the official National Radio station.

This state company, explains the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post, is the developer of two of the four Chinese vaccines that are currently undergoing phase three of clinical trials, to which are added another four from other countries.

Immunity up to five years

Zhou said the two vaccine candidates being developed by CNBG – a Sinopharm subsidiary – are likely to offer immunity for up to three years.

“Right now, based on the results of animal experiments, phased investigations and vaccines using similar technology, there is no doubt that immunity can last between one and three years,” he promised.

This, according to Zhou, would make it unnecessary to organize annual vaccination campaigns against flu-like coronaviruses, since the virus is not mutating so much that CNBG’s inactivated virus-based vaccine would have trouble coping with it. ‘

China is one of the powers immersed in the development of a vaccine against the coronavirus, a milestone that would help restore the image of the country, questioned by some countries such as the United States, which accuse Beijing of having hidden the pandemic during its phases initials and of having thus allowed its expansion globally.

As explained by the manager, their vaccines are being the most used in a program authorized by Beijing at the end of July to allow the use of vaccines not yet approved by regulators in high-risk groups, such as health workers, diplomats or employees who develop their work abroad.

In addition, CNBG recently signed an agreement with the technology company Huawei to offer vaccines and other treatments to its employees, although it would not be the first company to do so: according to the digital newspaper Caixin, a state company whose identity has not been revealed has already offered a vaccine to its workers since June and hundreds of them have agreed to wear it.

Tens of thousands of expatriate Chinese vaccinated

According to Zhou, the group of “hundreds of thousands” includes “tens of thousands” of people who work abroad and among whom no contagion would have been detected either, something that, in his opinion, would demonstrate the effectiveness of the vaccine.

Currently, CNBG vaccines are undergoing phase three trials in various countries such as Argentina, Peru, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco or Jordan.

And the company is building two centers, in Beijing and in Wuhan -the central city where the first outbreak of COVID-19 was registered globally-, which will allow expanding the annual production capacity of the vaccine from 220 million doses to between 800 and 1,000 million.

Zhou’s revelation joins that of Sinovac, the developer of the third of the vaccines used in the emergency vaccination program, which said that tens of thousands of people had already received their doses.

A fourth possible vaccine, created by the CanSino company and the Military Academy of Medicine, has received authorization to take part in a similar plan but only applied to the Army.

The president of this company, Yu Xuefeng, did not specify how many soldiers have already received the vaccine, although he specified that the program includes troops on peacekeeping missions in areas where the pandemic remains out of control.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION WARNS ABOUT POLITICS RELATING TO COVID-19

WHO warns of political overtones in information about COVID-19

The executive director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Health Emergencies Program warned that governments that provide information “for political reasons” about the coronavirus pandemic could face a political backlash.

Dr. Michael Ryan said Monday that “trying to present overly simplistic or overly simplistic solutions to the population is not a successful long-term strategy,” and pointed out to reporters in Geneva that “transparency, consistency, honesty” and admitting errors without factors that can generate confidence.

Ryan spoke in general terms following the question about conflicting messages from the Brazilian government regarding its response to COVID-19.

The official said that messages related to the coronavirus sometimes include “political overtones” and alluded to a saying that ensures that trust takes years to create, but seconds to lose.

“If communities perceive that they are receiving information that is being politically manipulated or that it is being handled in a way that is distorted evidence, then unfortunately that is paid for,” he concluded.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION CONSIDERS ‘STATISTICALLY IRRELEVANT’ CASES OF REINFECTION

The technical director of the World Health Organization (WHO) in charge of COVID-19, Maria Van Kerkhove, stressed today that for now the cases of reinfection of the coronavirus in the world are “almost statistically irrelevant”.

“Of the more than 26 million infections recorded in the world, there have only been a few cases of reinfection, so far not very relevant.

In any case, we continue to study them together with laboratories from different countries, “the American expert stressed at a press conference.

Van Kerkhove added that for now it has been proven that patients infected with coronavirus, even those who have not presented symptoms, have created antibodies after one or two weeks that represent a certain immunization against possible reinfections, although the duration of this is unknown.

“We see very promising results, in which this (immunological) response lasts for several months, but as we have only been in the pandemic for eight months, we cannot know how long it will last,” he admitted.

In the confirmed cases of reinfection, including that of a Hong Kong patient who had traveled to Spain shortly before developing COVID-19 for the second time, experts are investigating what type of antibodies had formed in their bodies after falling ill the first time. and the second time, the expert added.

Asked about the measures that schools must implement to guarantee a safe return to classrooms for students, Van Kerkhove stated that “each school must have a specific plan to attend to children with respiratory diseases, fever or COVID-19, and to track contacts “.

“The important thing is that the plans are as clear as possible and are well communicated to parents, so that they know what to do and when,” she summarized.

COSTA RICA GIVES EQUINE ANTIBODIES TO COVID PATIENTS

Costa Rica began yesterday to apply equine antibodies to patients with Covid-19, in an advanced phase of investigating a treatment.

The drug was obtained from the plasma of horses that were injected with new coronavirus proteins, and began to be applied to 26 patients hospitalized with Covid-19, said Román Macaya, president of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS), in charge of public hospitals.

Macaya specified that the drug was applied on Monday to four patients, two men and two women, aged 43, 60, 66 and 77 years old. The others will receive it in the next few days.

The president of the CCSS announced that in “a few weeks” the first results of the treatment will be known.

“It is a first-world study,” said Health Minister Daniel Salas at a press conference about the treatment developed by the University of Costa Rica and the CCSS. A similar drug is in development in Argentina.

“The treatment is a mixture of equine antibodies directed at different points of the virus to try to stop it before it generates consequences for the health of patients,” explained Macaya.

He specified that the drug seeks to lower the mortality of the disease and accelerate the recovery of patients, thereby preventing moderate patients from progressing to a more serious state.

Macaya clarified that it is not a substitute for the Covid-19 vaccine, which is under development in various laboratories around the world.

The treatment was tested in a laboratory at George Mason University in the state of Virginia, United States. If effective, scale production will begin at the Clodomiro Picado Institute of the University of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica, with 5 million inhabitants, is experiencing a high level of contagion, with 48,780 cases and 510 deaths.

This is a list of the number of cases per day since the first case was discovered in Panama

END NOTES

Last week, in conversation with friend and colleague, Chris Macolini, we expressed how shocked we both were about what we truly miss the most from our lives prior to this pandemic, this lockdown.  Chris wrote an article about how he just stopped what he was doing in the middle of the day and went to the movies.  We joked about equally missing the over-priced theater costs, stale popcorn, annoying patrons and the inevitable stomach problems that follow.

But in all sincerity, it really all comes back to the little things in life that I miss.  I’ve picked up new hobbies along the way, found that I truly am more able-bodied around the house as necessity has gotten me to be more daring and curious about how to fix this or how to prepare that.  Today, I was able to have a sip of coffee with a good friend during a quick business meet.  The best part of the sit-down was just talking about the mundane passings of our menial lives.  Sure, it started off as business, but it slowly became comfortable as we slowly and naturally evaded work-related topics and began commenting about his daughter nearly graduating college to follow him in his legal career.  Or how I took on the task of creating the perfect flan the other night.  (Oh, yeah, that’s right, it turned out AMAZING!!!)

I miss what we may have considered to be the mundane interactions that have since been put on hold for the last 6 months.  Hopefully, I’ve learned to never take for granted an opportunity to just sit and talk with a friend or perhaps a total, but interesting, stranger.

Once this is relaxed to the point where we can sit together at a restaurant, don’t be alarmed if you get a message from me suggesting we sit for coffee.  Not everything is business.

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…  And by all means (unless you’re out taste testing some better brews in preparation for our well-deserved coffee meet) STAY HOME!!…
