Always Cracking Jokes; Elimination of Total Quarantine on Weekends, Productive Bubble, Contamination in the World is Reduced; More Wood Working

Friday, February 26, 2021

Every chance I get, I’m cracking jokes.  Seldom will you ever find me serious unless I’ve specifically been told to be serious about something.  Usually, that doesn’t mean anything to me either.  “Hey Brett, you’re going to meet with the Director of the National Police.  Please keep it serious.”, she pleaded.  “Why?”, I asked.  “Because he’s the Director of the fricken National Police, please just don’t be you for the 30 minutes you’re going to be there.  Just behave.”, she continued to plead.  “Let’s negotiate 20 minutes, but after that, no promises.”  She did not look happy.

Oh, and by-the-by that was my wife telling me to behave.  The actual meeting with him went something like this, “Commando, I’d like to introduce you to a friend of mine, Brett Mikkelson.  Brett used to be CIA or something like that.”, the Sub Director introduces me.  “Were you really CIA?”, the Director asks.  “Sorry sir, that’s a secret, we’ll have to see how this meeting shakes out as to whether or not you’ll ever find out.”, I smiled behind my MINSA-authorized mask.  Then he laughed, I laughed, someone behind a mirror laughed and suddenly agents came out of nowhere throwing me to the ground in true secret-agent fashion.  I was in heaven.

Not always do my shenanigans play out as I’d hope they would.  We have a very rambunctious, energetic and loving neighbor who is involved in all aspects of our neighborhood, to the point where everyone just looks to her for problems with Idaan, ENSA, Municipio, garbage issues, noise complaints, etc etc etc.  Recently, as my wife and I sat enjoying an after-lunch beverage in the dining room, peering into each other’s eyes in what can only be described as a carbohydrate-induced semi-coma, Sayira’s phone rang, startling the both of us.  “Hello?  Oh hey, how are you?  Oh, I’d love to, but Brett’s the one for that task and I’m sure he’d love to help.  Give him a call.”, she hung up and without a word went back to sipping her beverage.  My jaw dropped.  “What the hell did you just volunteer me for, Drill Sergeant?  Who was that?”, I asked dumbfoundedly.  “Just answer the phone.”, she stated with her patented evil grin.

RIIING…. “Damn it.”, I thought to myself.  Knowing it was a bad idea to answer, I simply resolved to say “no” to whatever it is that the person on the other end was going to say.  I answered.  It was our wonderful neighbor lady who I try so very hard to never say no to.  The type of person that it physically pains me to say “no” to even if I have no other options.  “Brett, hi it’s me, your favorite neighbor. (She wasn’t lying). We need someone to help on the board of directors tomorrow AT 6AM with the thing about the thing that happened at the place where the guy said the word about that one road and the repairs for stuff.  We could add you as a vocal or similar.”, obviously, after she said “AT 6AM” I didn’t hear a damn thing after.  “I really apologize, but I won´t be able to help.  I really have too much on my plate and I’d only be failing the board if I accepted.”, I told her as I winced in agony.

“Oh, so NOW you’re serious!  Now when your neighbors need you most, you shy away under the guise of having something more important to do.”, my wife scoffed.  “Woa, hey, wait a minute, you just told her that you couldn’t and passed it to me.”, I clarified.  “I never said that I couldn’t, I just said you were the better person for the job.”, she snickered.

Fast-forward to the following day, at 430AM to be precise during the better part of my slumber, my “Brett senses” detected a disturbance in the air.  “Wake up!”, the disturbance told me.  “Where are the keys to your car?”  Still pitch-black, I strained to catch her form with the help of the red A/C “on” light.  “Why do you need the keys to my car?”, I grimaced as my back usually never offers to cooperate until after 6AM.  “I’m taking it to the meeting with our neighbor lady.  I told her I’d help, seeing as you were too selfish to lend a hand.”  Once again regretting having said “no” the day before, I told her where the keys were, and she was on her way.

I think I may have blinked, but in no time at all, the disturbance returned and was quick to blurt out “They’re crazy!”.  “Who’s crazy now, snook´ms?”, I yawned, eyes still shut.  My back was finally cooperating, so it must have been past 6AM.  “I can´t believe they made me get up and go so early and the thing about the guy with the stuff at the road….”, I still wasn’t listening.  “Yeah that’s crazy, but you know who’s really crazy, sweet pie?”, I suggested.  This is the part where I should have… …shut up.  But, I’m at that age where I just don’t give a damn.  One time in my life I’d pause and think to myself, “Should I?”, but not anymore.  And to think that my darling wife constantly goes out of her way to protect me from myself, but it’s a useless gesture.  And now, at barely past 6AM in the morning, I’m about to test the endurance of our marriage.  “Who’s really the crazy one, honey?”, she poised herself instinctively ready for the worst, all the while clutching something tightly in the palm of her hand.  So, I paused, took a deep breath and said, “The really crazy ones are the ones who followed the crazy.”  My Brett senses started to tingle again the very second the jar of “Clinique Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator” skipped off the front of my brow.  You may call it “pain”, I call it my “Brett senses”.  Yes, my wife beats me, but I deserve it.

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS:

Yoli’s Wisdom:

Vaccines against COVID-19 can cause symptoms similar to those of the new coronavirus.

The most frequent symptoms affect more than 1 in 10 immunized patients, but none pose a very serious risk to health – less compared to the consequences that COVID-19 can leave in those who have recovered.

The 3 vaccines against COVID-19 authorized for emergency use have the same side effects – some with more incidence and severity than others -, among which are: headache, pain at the injection site, muscle conditions and joints, fatigue, nausea, fever, chills, swelling and redness at the injection site, skin rash and swollen glands in the armpit area.

There’s an easy way to tell if the vaccine is working, according to Dr. Amanda Cohn, a fellow at the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. In the comments she made a few days ago that collects BGR, she said that people should be aware of 3 of these side effects once they get the vaccine.

One is pain at the injection site. Another is fatigue, and some people report feeling exhausted after receiving their second dose of the vaccine.

Also, Cohn said you have to be prepared to deal with a mild fever. This is also a sign that the vaccine is working as it is in the process of creating defenses so that the body can fight COVID-19.

Also, these side effects are said to only last a couple of days or so and shouldn’t be a cause for concern.

“It is not COVID-19. It is your body building an immune response to the protein that is mimicking the disease,” the doctor clarified.

VACCINE DELIVERY FROM ASTRAZENECA TO PANAMA WILL BE POSTPONED UNTIL MAY

Although the authorities did not speak of the exact date, the arrival of this vaccine would feed the immunization journey that has been carried out so far with the Pfizer drug.

As happened with the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, the lack of capacity in the supply chain of the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca will cause a delay in the arrival of its vaccine to Panama, as confirmed by the general coordinator of the Expanded Program on Immunization (PAI), Itzel Hewitt. 9 days had passed in February, when Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes announced to the country that the first batch of 216,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine would be delivered in March.

Hewitt, confirmed that the AstraZeneca vaccine will arrive in the country in May due to some problems the company has had, including the supply chain, so they decided to postpone delivery. Meanwhile, AstraZeneca is carrying out studies on the effectiveness of its vaccine in minors between 6 and 16 years of age, so that if its use in this population were certified, Panama could administer it to children under 16 years of age.

“Panama has made sure to introduce safe and effective vaccines proven by clinical trials with scientific evidence. Panama does not stop trying to expand its scheme as an added value for the Panamanian population, if there is compliance with the law and if it is certified, we could use it, ”Hewitt said about the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in children under 16 years of age. Vaccination process The dissatisfaction at the beginning of the vaccination process did not wait, after receiving the first batch, part of the health personnel reported that the established plan was not being complied with, but the complaints increased with the application of the second batch.

First, accusations arose that several people, in the province of Veraguas, allegedly received the vaccine against COVID-19 ahead of schedule and outside the phases to which they belonged, this cost the post of the Regional Director of Health who was dismissed Last Tuesday.

While in social networks there was information about the inoculation of three relatives of the president of the National Assembly, Marcos Castillero, who justified the action through a letter posted on his social networks, assuring that one was an official of the Sanitation of the Bay, another an official of the Ministry of Health and the other relative belongs to a risk group.

“It is important to highlight that almost all workers in a situation similar to those mentioned have already been vaccinated,” said Castillero; ensuring that both he and his family respect the vaccination process established by the Executive.

Although Hewitt described the vaccination process that has been carried out in the country so far as “excellent,” he pointed out that the complaints about its application to relatives of officials and of course cronyism are fortuitous events that hinder the positive aspects and the achievements obtained. “We give the guidelines, it is very clear what are the phases in which each population is going to be vaccinated.

In phase 1A and 1B, it is very clear which groups are going to be vaccinated and if at any given moment someone interrupts that, then it is out of our control, ”Hewitt said.

According to Hewitt, the EPI is preparing, hoping to finish phase 2 of the vaccination against COVID-19 as soon as possible, so that when the flu medicine arrives, it begins to inoculate children under 5 years of age, pregnant women and population at risk that has already been vaccinated against COVID or has not been vaccinated.

He explained that the time that must exist between the application of the vaccine against COVID-19 and influenza is one month, ensuring that the Expanded Program on Immunization has the capacity to carry both days at the same time and in parallel.

Until this Wednesday, February 24, in Panama, 71,221 doses of vaccines of 157 thousand 500 doses delivered by Pfizer had been applied. In addition, it began with phase 1B where members of the public forces who have some type of vulnerability and older adults will be served.

PRIVATE HOSPITALS ARE MADE AVAILABLE TO BE USED AS VACCINATION CENTERS AGAINST COVID-19

Panama carries out the vaccination process against COVID-19.

Through a note addressed to the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, the All Panama Movement and the Panamanian Association of Private Hospitals, he proposes the establishment of a public-private alliance, with the aim of expediting the vaccination process against COVID-19.

It details that through this alliance, it is proposed to use private hospitals as vaccination centers, taking advantage of their geographical distribution, and the human and logistical capacity installed in them to massify and decentralize vaccination.

“Considering that it is expected that Phase II of the COVID-19 vaccination process will begin in March, we allow ourselves to present a proposal for a public-private alliance to speed up the mass vaccination process in the country … we consider This is an opportunity to demonstrate the potential of public-private partnerships for the good of society, particularly in response to a pandemic that does not discriminate, setting an example for the rest of the countries in the region to follow ”, he indicates the Asociation.

GINA ROMÁN: ‘PRODUCTIVE BUBBLE, A SYSTEM THAT ALLOWS A WORK ENVIRONMENT FREE OF COVID-19’

Gina Román is an economist and the current Planning Director of the Social Security Fund.

The Social Security Fund coordinates with the companies the creation of productive bubbles, safe zones used to minimize or limit the contacts that collaborators may have outside the company, so that there is no expanded expansion and that it also avoid an increase in the family and community transmission of covid-19.

This strategy is led by the National Planning Directorate (Dinap) of the entity, chaired by Gina Román.

According to Román, the system will allow the CSS and the participating companies to have safe areas to reduce community transmission.

What is the productive bubble project?

It is a safe area to minimize or limit the contacts that the employees of a company may have, so that there is no expanded expansion or increased community transmission of covid-19.

What is an extended productive bubble?

It covers the care of employees positive for covid-19, captured in the productive bubble, in their area of residence, offering community traceability intervention, which includes: home visits by health care personnel, taking samples for diagnosis from relatives , financial support, guidance in prevention measures, provision of food and medicine, among others.

When am I participating in the ‘bubble’?

When complying with the measures of physical distancing between people, constant and correct use of the mask, take hygiene measures for hands, surfaces and contact sites (doors, tables, among others). By performing laboratory tests selected by the CSS and the company, which, in the first phase, blood tests were carried out on a large part of the collaborators and PCR (swabbing) on a selected sample. This allowed the identification of areas or employees that require greater vigilance of prevention measures.

What are the strategies that you develop in this project?

Among the strategies of this project, the following stand out: Sampling of all collaborators, rapid screening tests for collaborators, PCR on symptomatic collaborators, isolation of positive cases in hospital hotels, respiratory care unit room, or intensive care unit. Treatment of all positive patients, internal (work) and external (community) traceability, logistical support (socioeconomic condition), containment measures on users (training, teaching), periodic / sequential controls for collaborators, environmental controls (disinfection) and controls temperature and hygiene to users. Physical distancing will be practiced when entering the Metro facilities and also inside the stations. The temperature will be taken for all users, as well as for the personnel working in each of the operating stations of the Metro de Panamá, S.A. There will be staff who will verify the mandatory use of the mask (face mask), and the correct use of it. Hand hygiene and use of alcoholic gel will be promoted. Constant vigilance of security and protection measures, such as the use of widely spaced positions, recruitment of factories and avoiding crowds at all times. Through this initiative of the CSS it is sought to maintain in companies and institutions, spaces free of covid-19.

How will we keep the extended bubble in the company safe?

The bubble will be maintained by continuing to comply with prevention measures and participating in monitoring the bubble, in which periodic tests are carried out on people who have not yet had covid-19.

Who will be tested for monitoring?

People who have never been diagnosed and who belong to the most vulnerable workplaces in the company are randomly selected.

What tests are used for monitoring?

A specific test for covid-19 (PCR) is used, which is taken by means of a swab in the throat and nose. Results take about 48 hours.

What should I do while I wait for the test result?

You must follow your normal working hours, because you are not a suspect, it is only part of a business monitoring. The result will be delivered directly to you and the necessary measures will be taken according to its result.

ASSEMBLY PLENARY APPROVES REGULATION FOR THE REINTEGRATION OF WORKERS WITH SUSPENDED CONTRACTS

The plenary session of the National Assembly approved this Wednesday, February 24, in the third debate the bill No. 542, which regulates the gradual reinstatement of workers with suspended contracts.

This rule also recognizes the payment of maternity leave to workers with suspended contracts and establishes temporary measures “to preserve employment and the stability of companies.”

The Minister of Labor and Labor Development, Doris Zapata, stated that this project arises from the need to legislate to have “a roadmap for the gradual return of workers.”

With the new norm, some elements of Law No. 157 of 2020 are “rescued and reaffirmed”, according to the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development, such as the regulation of the termination of the employment relationship by mutual agreement and the total cancellation of the benefits to which the worker is entitled after suspension.

One of the novelties of the bill is that the Mitradel creates the National Unemployment Registry, with the aim of having statistical data that allow promoting clear public policies to promote employment.

WHAT DO THE GORGAS STUDIES REVEAL IN CASE OF COVID-19 REINFECTION?

Alexander Martínez, who is part of the group of Panamanian scientists from the Gorgas Memorial Institute, who participated in the investigation for the confirmation of the first case of reinfection of COVID-19 explained details of this finding.

According to what Martínez indicated in the program Radial Mesa de Periodistas, the scientific work was done with the sample of an individual between 35 and 40 years old, who had the infection in June of last year and the reinfection in early December.

In that second infection it was determined that it was not a virus equal to the first; It is a virus that in effect has changes in its RNA and that possibly would have led to the fact that the antibodies that it had already acquired with the first infection were not effective in fighting the second.

“This is what happens with these viruses when you get reinfected, this means that the antibody or immune response that was created during the first infection was not enough to stop the next, this could be because the virus has changed enough so that the immune system does not attack it, needing a little more time to prevent you from getting infected ”, he added.

He said that there is also scientific evidence of cases where the virus remains in immunosuppressed people, either due to some HIV cancer, which are not classified as reinfection but as resistance of the virus.

He explained that of the 30 thousand letters that make up the RNA of the COVID-19 virus, it has been observed that it has been accumulating changes over time, since it was detected in Panama in March, which is currently being analyzed. Between December to February it has been changing.

In the case of the patient whose second virus was analyzed, it was found that the infection was not as strong as the first.

Like this case, another 20 more cases of possible reinfections are being investigated.

For his part, at a press conference, the director of the Gorgas Commemorative Institute, Juan Pascale, said that this person presented chest pain, muscle aches, fevers, in addition to nasal congestion and loss of smell and taste. ; At two weeks he was already asymptomatic and without any problems, but in December he went for medical attention for rhinorrhea, nasal discomfort, general pain in the body and had general symptoms.

MINSA AND AIG ACTIVATE DIGITAL PLATFORM TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF COVID-19

The system seeks to prevent the spread of the virus.

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) and the Government Innovation Authority (AIG), in coordination with the companies Google and Apple, activated the Protect yourself Panama digital platform in order to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

According to the authorities, this system that works through cell phones will allow a person to know if at any time they had contact with someone who has the virus.

“When activating the Protect yourself system, whenever you are 2 meters away from another person for a minimum of 10 minutes, both phones will exchange secure and anonymous data via Bluetooth. If another user you were close to tests positive for COVID-19, he or she can notify you of these events through the app anonymously. The system will send a notification to your phone and to that of any other person that the notifying user has been able to expose, as long as he or she is also a user of the application ”, explained in a statement from the Panamanian authorities.

It was reported that if a person activates this voluntary service, GPS information, location, identifiers or personal information of users will not be collected or stored and that they will not be shared by this service.

“This is a new voluntary service developed in collaboration with Google and Apple to help curb the spread of COVID-19, and to help better control in the framework of the commercial reopening,” it is reported.

It was reported that in Apple cell phones the application will be incorporated, while in Android devices the user must download it from the Google store.

NEW INFECTIONS OF COVID-19 IN THE WORLD ARE AT HALF SINCE JANUARY

Portugal is one of the countries in Europe with a notable decrease in cases.

The pandemic continued its marked slowdown around the world this week, as new coronavirus infections are twice as numerous as in early January, according to AFP counts.

With 362,000 infections registered daily this week, the indicator continues its decline that began just over a month ago, according to an AFP balance as of Thursday. New infections continue to decline (-12% this week) from a record 743,000 new daily cases between January 5 and 11.

Since the peak in early January, new contamination worldwide has been cut in half (-51%).

This week, only the Middle East saw an acceleration of contagion (+ 11%). All other regions experienced slowdowns: -28% in the United States / Canada, -9% in Africa, Asia and Europe, and -7% in Latin America / Caribbean.

The virus practically does not circulate in Oceania (13 cases a day).

This week, the largest decrease was observed in Portugal (-51%, 2,100 new cases per day). They are followed by Bolivia (-41%, 800 new daily cases), Spain (-37%, 11,500), the United States (-28%, 72,800) and Colombia (-26%, 4,700).

In the United States, new daily cases were divided by three from the peak observed in the week of January 5-11. The drop seen in South Africa is more impressive, as contaminations (1,980 daily cases this week) were divided by 10 in the period.

Iraq, the country with the most contagious British variant, is for the second consecutive week the country where the epidemic is accelerating the most (+ 62%, 2,900 new cases per day). They are followed by Jordan (+ 44%, 2,100), Hungary (+ 23%, 1,700), Poland (+ 18%, 6,300) and Austria (+ 15%, 1,500).

Despite a sharp decrease (-28%), the United States continues to be the country with the highest number of new contaminations this week, with 72,800 new cases daily, ahead of Brazil (45,200, stable) and France (18,600, – two%).

DECESSES

The United States recorded the highest number of deaths in the past week (an average of 2,566 per day), followed by Brazil (1,037), Mexico (982), the United Kingdom (551) and Russia (463).

The number of diagnosed cases reflects no more than a fraction of the actual number of infections, and cross-country comparisons should be viewed with caution, as testing policies differ from country to country.

CLINICAL TRIALS PHASE OF CUREVAC VACCINE AGAINST COVID-19 STARTS IN PANAMA

The German firm reported that it has already enrolled the first participants in this clinical study and that it is looking for a total of 3,000 volunteers in the Central American country.

The German laboratory CureVac began the last and third phase of “large-scale” clinical trials of its vaccine against covid-19 in Panama, in which about 3,000 Panamanians are expected to participate to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of immunization.

The German firm reported in a public statement dated in Panama City that it has already enrolled the first participants in this clinical study and that it is seeking a total of 3,000 volunteers in the Central American country.

Dr. Xavier Saez-Llorens, specialist in infectology and research leader in Panama, indicated that it is of great help that healthy Panamanians aged 18 years or older participate in this study “to be able to return to ‘normality’ more quickly and as quickly as possible. as soon as possible working together “to stop the pandemic, which leaves 5,672 deaths in this country.

He explained that around 36,500 people around the world will participate in this double-blind study, half will receive the vaccine, the other half a placebo.

The vaccine will be administered in two doses four weeks apart.

VACCINE BENEFITS

Among the benefits of the CureVac vaccine, its ease of storage and transport stands out, in addition to using mRNA technology that instructs the human body to activate its own defense mechanism.

The consequence is that this vaccine can remain stable for at least three months at refrigerator temperature, which makes its use “easier”, compared to those of other firms that must be stored at much lower temperatures, according to the German laboratory CureVac.

In addition, he noted that the multinational pharmaceutical company Bayer announced its collaboration with CureVac in the development, distribution and operations in key territories, of the candidate vaccine CVnCoV.

Panama participates in a phase 2 study to verify the clinical effectiveness of a vaccine from the German laboratory CureVac.

The Center for Vaccines and Clinical Research (Cevaxin), with the Institute for Scientific Research and High Technology Services (INDICASAT-AIP), is part of the COVID-19 Vaccine Research Consortium, which is endorsed by the National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (SENACYT) aims to channel and prioritize initiatives to develop a vaccine against this disease in Panama.

Cevaxin will begin the study in phase 3, approved by the National Research Bioethics Committee and the Ministry of Health (Minsa), in which INDICASAT-AIP will participate.

The CureVac vaccine is part of the World Health Organization (WHO) Covax initiative, designed to ensure equitable global access to vaccines for COVID-19.

200 THOUSAND VEHICULAR PLATES HAVE NOT BEEN REMOVED, MAYOR OF PANAMA

The Mayor’s Office indicates that the pandemic has affected the removal of plates in Panama.

The Mayor’s Office of Panama reported that from January to December 2020, it delivered approximately 280,000 license plates, while 200,000 are waiting to be removed by taxpayers.

It should be noted that the Municipality interrupted the delivery of plates on March 17 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the implementation of the health emergency measures established by the National Government. As of June 15, the service began to be gradually regularized.

The entity announced that before the pandemic about 3,500 plates were delivered daily, an amount that is currently reduced to 1,500 per day.

“The Vocational School of Chapala has had a delay in the manufacture of the plates corresponding to the year 2021, due to the fact that the raw material from Germany took a long time to arrive due to the effects of the pandemic. Despite the situation that arose , Chapala has resumed its normal rhythm of production, which is why taxpayers are urged to manage the withdrawal of their license plate corresponding to the year 2020, complying with the sanitary protocol regulations issued by the Ministry of Health, to avoid the spread of the virus “, added the Mayor’s Office.

The Municipality informs taxpayers that to carry out this process they must have the current vehicle inspection and have paid the road tax, they can request an appointment to remove the license plate through 202-9464 or on the website: mupa .gob.pa, Digital Mayor’s Office section. The License Plate Delivery Center in Francisco Arias Paredes Park maintains extended hours from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Monday to Friday.

In addition, they indicate that the option of home delivery throughout the capital city is provided with the payment of B / 10.00 (ten balboas), which allows the taxpayer to receive quickly, safely and without risk, the license plate without moving from your residence.

This is a list of the number of cases per day since the first case was discovered in Panama

END NOTES:

I just received these 4, very nice slabs of Corotú wood.  One is going to my friend Jonas, as a dining room table.  They look very dry although I’m going to let them sit for another month until I get done with two other weekend projects.  If anyone wants me to make them something, just let me know.  I’ll take time doing it, but it will eventually get done.

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…

And by all means (unless you’re negotiating a deal with dodgy Colombians for the purchase of fine artesian slabs of wood for your next dinner table project) STAY HOME!!…
