Reading is fundamental, but writing is no stroll through the park.  A month ago, I took a hiatus due to travel and other issues.  Then, after a quick report, I took a two-week vacation essentially to get my mind right, see my mommy in Wisconsin on Mother’s Day and get my yearly good bill of health from the VA.  (Yeah, I gained 8 pounds, but I’m working to shed that blubber even as I type.)

I feel like I’m running out of things to say.  At the beginning of this pandemic, news was seemingly more valuable by the minute.  Now, we have so many news outlets in every language, that what I post is now either untimely or simply redundant.

That being said, I’m going to cut back my newsletter to just monthly updates.  Compiling news throughout the month seems like it would make more sense anyways now.

As this is my last report for the month of May, I think I’ll chime in on an oddly touchy subject:

Vaccinations.  (Cue lightening and spooky piano music.)

I think I should start off by saying, you should NOT believe everything that the government says.  They lie to us all the time for various reasons and it’s hard to trust them.  I mean, if a friend of yours starts lying to you for no apparent reason, you’d stop trusting that person and may even completely disconnect yourself from them, right?  A comedian recently commented that it’s ok if you believe EVERY conspiracy theory, but you’d have to be crazy to not believe at least one of them.  That kind of a person just can’t be trusted.

But when it comes to vaccines, we need to be in the know.  This is serious stuff.  Quite frankly, who cares if Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden died 2 years ago and the people we see are just body doubles (or possibly aliens)?  How does that affect us?  Or whether or not aliens don’t exist?  (They exist, so I’m using a double negative to prove a point.).

Remember when millions of kids around the world would get chickenpox?  The majority of you reading will remember, but did you realize that it’s practically gone from our lives?  The vaccine was introduced into the USA in 1995.  Prior to that, there were over 4 million cases every year.  Of those “only” 100-150 kids died.  Not a big deal, right?  After everyone got vaccinated, those numbers dropped by at least 90%.  Less than 400,000 infections, and less than 10 kids per year on average would die from this.  I’ll add that 9 out of 10 kids that died, were not vaccinated.

And then there was Smallpox.  I don’t remember Smallpox.  If you’re older than 50 years, you may remember it.  Clinically known as Variola major or its other variant “Variola minor”, it was also known as SPECKLED MONSTER, and the last naturally occurring case was diagnosed in October 1977.  How, pray tell did we get rid of this?  NO!, it wasn’t the aliens this time! They’re too busy messing with airline pilots and giving proper distraction to what’s actually going on in US politics nowadays.  Evidence suggests that Smallpox was around since the 3rd century BCE as shown from studies of Egyptian mummies (and daddies).  Over 500 million people died from this in the last 100 years of its existence.  In the 18th century Europe, it’s estimated that 400,000 people died every year!  And, one third of ALL blindness was caused by Smallpox.

After hundreds of millions of deaths, Edward Jenner introduce us with a vaccine in 1796.  Actually, that’s not entirely factual.  China came out with some mystic guru mumbo jumbo around the 1500s.  But Jenner’s concoction is the vaccine that is still used today and it eradicated the Speckled Monster from the world.  Allow me to reiterate that… …it EERRRRAAAADDIIIIICAAAAATTED the virus.  How awesome is that, eh?

Oh, here’s a lovely picture of Smallpox for those who’ve never seen it:

Child with Smallpox in Bangladesh circa 1973

POLIO…. The amount of information on polio is massive and highly technical.  The virus “poliovirus” provoked an infectious disease called “Poliomyelitis”… …or just “Polio”.

Of those who got it, those with muscle weakness, about 15 to 30 percent of adults died from it.  Once you were infected with this, there was no specific treatment to get rid of it.  Luckily, in 2018 there were only 33 cases of “wild polio” in the world all between the regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan, which is down from 350,000 wild cases in 1988.  Also having been around for thousands of years, it was finally identified in 1909 by the Austrian immunologist Karl Landsteiner.  The first vaccine was developed in the 1950s by Jonas Salk and the oral vaccine, which is still the world standard, was developed by Albert Sabin shortly after.

Could you imagine still having to deal with ChickenPox, SmallPox and Polio in our day and age?  Not only those, but diphtheria, bacterial influenza, measles, mumps, rubella and tetanus have all been nearly eradicated by vaccines, most only slightly present in underdeveloped nations.

Why oh why then are people still up in arms about the Coronavirus vaccine?  Some say, “they made it “too quick”.  Others, say that they don’t want to be controlled by the aliens.  Really?  The aliens are still trying to determine whether there’s intelligent life on our planet.  Once again, it’s not them.  To date, with the Corona Virus, we’ve had 165 million cases of infection and 3.44 million deaths around the world since this crap started.  This year, 2021, will be worse than 2020 by far.  Most of the western hemisphere is quite laxed in comparison to how we were 6 months ago, but that doesn’t mean we’re out of danger.  We just needed to get back to work and recover our economy.

A family member who refuses to get the vaccine says that he’s not getting it because it’s laced with Luciferase.  Luciferase is an enzyme used for bioluminescence and found naturally in various organisms like the firefly.  It was used by some researchers to see how well a coronavirus proxy invaded cells and which cells were most vulnerable.  But, from what I’ve read it’s not in the vaccine.  My family member’s concern was that once that’s in your system, it will be used to detect whether you have been vaccinated later on or not.  The airlines, he explained, will eventually NOT ALLOW you to travel if you have the vaccine, which is contrary to what they are doing now.  I don’t remember how it is supposed to control you, but it will also control you… …somehow.  And, within 18 months, 70% of everyone that gets vaccinated is going to die.  The vaccine that was created to stop this virus from killing us, is actually going to be the thing that kills us.  Why not just let the virus kill us?  Why not release a more potent virus that would do the job more efficiently?

So, I am getting vaccinated.  We have a $10 bet going as to whether I die from this within 18 months. And, I’m travelling to the US to get my vaccine.  I’m too damn young, healthy and sexy to get on the list here in Panama.

5 simple tips to get back in shape after lockdowns.

When lockdowns began to fight the covid-19 pandemic, millions of people stopped exercising regularly.

Experts believe that they have likely lost muscle mass during this time.

An effect that can lead to long-term mobility and balance problems and trigger or aggravate a wide range of serious health conditions.

People with persistent problems should seek the help of a doctor or physical therapist, but there is a list of things that can be done to regain fitness.

Here is a list of 5 things you can do, according to various experts.

1. Small goals

Starting with some basic exercise is the hardest thing for many people, experts say. His advice: don’t try to do too much.

“But starting small is key to improving motivation,” says Uzo Ehiogu of the Royal Orthopedic Hospital in Birmingham, UK.

“It takes a small victory every day.”

Strengthening exercise is primarily about moving heavy things.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean lifting heavy weights. Your own body weight may be sufficient.

For someone who has been doing little or no exercise during confinement, 15 minutes of housework or gardening, or a thousand extra steps a day, it could be a good place to start, he says.

The most important factor in forming healthy habits is consistency. “

So the best way to achieve this is by setting small goals that you can achieve.

“People who set big goals are more likely to fail to meet them.”

Starting with a few push-ups (also known as push-ups) or half push-ups, sitting / standing exercises, or doing squats and lunges can be very helpful.

2. Push and pull

The muscles of the upper body, the biceps, triceps, pectoral or chest muscles, and the trapezius muscle of the back and shoulders may have been weakened during the block.

Lisa Osborn-Jenkins, who treats patients in Southampton, UK, says simple things like changing the way we shop may have compounded the problems.

“Carrying loaded shopping bags is an activity that requires a lot of force. The shift to online shopping means that many people no longer do that exercise.”

A good way to get it back is to start doing push and pull exercises.

“The muscles in the front of the body are usually good at pushing and the muscles in the back are good at pulling,” says the Ehiogu.

“You have to try to balance both.”

For this, push-ups or three-quarter push-ups are good if you complete them too much, starting with only a few repetitions.

A pulling exercise can be rowing, using an elastic band, or pull-ups using a bar on a door frame.

But it doesn’t have to be a formal exercise.

Moving things in the garden or cleaning a closet can provide the same amount of exercise.

3. Leg work

Simple exercises for the lower body and core (core) can yield great benefits, says neurologist Dr. Caroline Appel.

That means working the muscles in your legs, buttocks, abs, and lower back.

“Sitting or standing exercises are a good way to start,” she says, along with calf raises, as well as going up and down stairs.

Just start with 10 reps and build up.

“You should increase the pace more slowly than you think you can,” says Dr. Appel.

When you’re ready, and if appropriate, you can move to squats and lunges in the same place.

“If you don’t have a lot of money for the team, that shouldn’t stop you. You can start with almost nothing.”

4. Date it

Having a written schedule helps us overcome “decision fatigue” and stick with our goal, says physical therapist Ben Lombard.

In these months, he says, millions of people have missed incidental exercise, such as walking to the station or to the bus stop.

So working out a schedule to make up for missed exercise has become doubly important.

“People should organize with simple, smart and specific goals,” says Patricia Smith of the University of London. And that is difficult to achieve without a schedule.

Smith says that exercising at the same time every day can also help us develop healthy routines.

And Lisa Osborn-Jenkins says it’s doubly motivating if you can do it socially.

Exercising with others gives you two types of motivation: “There is the pleasure of being with others, and there is a very important feeling that you do not want to disappoint them by not showing up.”

5. Get everything ready

Leaving your exercise gear ready the night before is a good way to make sure you won’t forget do it in the morning, says Lombard.

“It’s about minimizing mental barriers to exercising.”

When you wake up in the morning and see your gear ready, it will be a powerful sign of determination.

A sign that you’re already at it.

Having to search your closet for sportswear makes it much more likely that you will back down and roll over and go back to sleep next time.

Likewise, Ehiogu says, “Put your slippers by the door.”

If you stopped exercising during lockdown, give yourself one less reason not to do it again now.

PANAMA TEMPORARILY CLOSES ITS BORDERS WITH COLOMBIA

Panamanian authorities grapple with the growing arrival through the dangerous Darien jungle, the border with Colombia, of migrants, especially Haitians, traveling to the United States.

Panama’s measure is a response to Colombia’s decision to open land, river and sea crossings across all its borders.

“The National Government has determined to temporarily suspend the entry into the national territory, by land, sea and river, of any person coming from the border with the Republic of Colombia, as of May 20, 2021,” says a statement from the ministry of Foreign Relations of Panama published Wednesday night.

The Colombian government reopened from zero hours on Wednesday its borders with Panama, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil, closed 14 months ago to prevent the spread of the covid-19 pandemic, which at that time was just beginning in the country.

Panama, before this decision of the Colombian Government, expressed “its concern”, because “it puts at risk the significant progress made by all Panamanians to control the covid-19 pandemic, as well as border security and the control of migratory flow” .

“And consequently,” it resolved to “temporarily suspend the entry” to Panama “by land, sea and river, of all persons coming from the border” with Colombia “as of May 20, 2021.”

Panama, which accumulates 372,221 cases and 6,305 deaths from the covid, now exhibits, after two strong waves of the disease, some control of the pandemic, with a positivity of new cases of 5% and a significant reduction in the rate of daily deaths.

Panamanian authorities are also dealing with the growing arrival through the dangerous Darien jungle, the natural border with Colombia, of migrants, especially Haitians, who are traveling to the United States.

Between January and April, 11,370 extra-regional migrants arrived in Panama, according to official figures provided to Efe by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which pointed out that this flow is growing due to the dry season, which facilitates transit. By the jungle.

Faced with this situation, Panama asked Colombia to apply a “controlled flow” scheme, to which the Andean country responded by agreeing to expeditiously deliver information on irregular migrants heading to the Central American country.

At the end of last April, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said that there were more than 10,000 irregular migrants and refugees in Colombia waiting to pass to Panama on their journey to North America.

THERE WILL BE PENALTY FOR THOSE WHO FAIL TO USE THE FACE SCREEN IN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

As of May 17, the mandatory use of the face shield and mask in public transport began to rule in Panama.

The Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, assured this Monday that there will be a sanction for people who fail to comply with the use of the facial screen in public transport.

During a tour this morning through the MiBus facilities, Sucre explained that the sanction will depend on the health center of the area where the person fails to comply with the mandatory use of the facial screen.

Likewise, the head of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) portfolio clarified that the use of the face screen does not replace the mask.

“The person must use the face shield and the mask when he uses public transport,” he said.

As of today, May 17, the mandatory use of the face shield and mask in public transport began to rule in Panama.

The measure is given before the decision of the Minsa to increase the maximum passenger occupancy in public transport to 80% capacity.

According to the new provisions of the Minsa, the capacity will be 64 users in the orange and blue subways.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO MONITOR POSSIBLE CHANGES IN CORONAVIRUS VARIANTS?

In Panama, cases with some of the variants of concern have been detected.

The appearance of new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is a normal event, but its genetic surveillance in the region of the Americas should continue to detect changes that may affect control measures, including vaccines, in time, said a group of experts from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Jairo Méndez Rico, PAHO advisor on emerging viral diseases, highlighted that mutations are natural in the process of evolution and adaptation of viruses.

When these variants have a potential impact or risk to public health, they are considered Variants of Concern (VOC). The four variants of concern that have been detected in the Americas include those originating in the United Kingdom (B 1.1.7), South Africa (B.1.351), Brazil (P.1), and India (B.1.617).

According to PAHO, so far 37 countries and territories have confirmed the presence of one or more of the four variants of concern. Variant B.1.1.7 was confirmed in 34 countries; variant B.1.351 in 17, variant P.1 in 21 countries, and variant B.1.617 in eight.

“Although some (variants of concern) have shown greater capacity for replication and transmission, they are not more aggressive or severe. From an evolutionary perspective, the virus is not interested in killing its host. As of now, there is insufficient evidence to infer that currently available vaccines do not work against these variants, “said Mendez.

The specialists recalled that, the higher the level of transmission of the virus in populations, the more likely it will be that viral mutations will occur and new variants will appear.

“This is one of the reasons why slowing down transmission is so important,” Méndez added.

PAHO stressed that since the beginning of the pandemic, the regional network for covid-19 genomic surveillance was established in the Americas, in order to strengthen the sequencing capacity in the participating laboratories and establish routine genomic sequencing of SARS-CoV- two.

As part of the network, six regional reference laboratories help countries with the genomic sequencing of variants: Fiocruz in Brazil, the Institute of Public Health in Chile, InDRE in Mexico, the Gorgas Institute in Panama, the Centers for the United States Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, and the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago.

WARNING THAT BEFORE THE INCREASE IN COVID-19 CASES, PEOPLE AT RISK OF DIE SHOULD BE VACCINATED

Covid vaccine.

While the vaccination process against COVID-19 advances in the country, the concern that cases continue to increase rapidly and suffer a new wave of infections alerts doctors, who assure that it is important to maintain prevention campaigns, increase the vaccine portfolio and avoid the feeling that by being vaccinated the danger has passed.

Townships such as Betania, San Francisco, Juan Díaz and others from the province of Panama that were outside the list of those that register more than ten cases per day for approximately a month and a half; and where part of the population has been vaccinated, they again appear in the statistics of the most affected townships at the national level.

The intensivist doctor Julio Sandoval considers that part of what happens in these townships where part of the population has already been vaccinated is due to what he and his colleagues have called the “Superman syndrome”, since people think that by Being vaccinated relaxes the measures, without remembering that the vaccine is to avoid a serious disease of COVID-19, but it does not reduce the contagion to 100%.

While epidemiologist Arturo Rebollón stated that it is still not possible to speak of regrowth in these sectors, explaining that having so few cases, when starting to have new infections, it makes it look like a great acceleration, but for eight weeks Panama has presented less than 3,000 cases and staying low is very difficult.

“We have fifteen months of pandemic, if you ask me, at this point measuring speed does not make much sense. RTs are very irrelevant when they are very low in the third and fourth waves. Increase percentages should be used, but stronger criteria should be used, such as the number of deaths and hospitalizations in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which are the main ones ”, indicated Rebollón.

The epidemiologist explained that 1 in 4 Panamanians is possibly protected against COVID-19, taking into account that at least 800 thousand people have applied the first dose and another 300 thousand have been infected, so we could have an acceleration of cases, but not deaths, so he does not expect what happened in January to happen.

Who should be protected first with the vaccine?

In recent months we have also seen changes in the vaccination process that at first prioritized vaccinating all adults over 60 years of age at the national level, but now minors and young people have been included, while in several provinces adults Older people are still waiting to be called by the Ministry of Health (Minsa) to purchase their first dose of vaccine.

This situation, Rebollón considered it a “bad strategy”, since it is necessary to “vaccinate those who are going to die.”

“You have to be transparent, if you are going to die you have to protect it, that should be the strategy and even more so in a country like ours that has had one of the worst mortality rates in the world, then you have to have that priority. We must focus on the only priority, protecting those who are going to die, that is the true priority of vaccination ”, emphasized the epidemiologist.

He added that, “after protecting those who are going to die, then you can stretch the sheet, but you have to protect those who are going to die, that is the hardest decision.” Although he also weighed the fact of vaccinating people who work in important sectors of the economy such as the Panama Canal that if it closes it will collapse the economy.

“Now that we have almost a million people vaccinated, we must close all people at risk because we are seeing acceleration, especially in places where there is greater acceleration, since between 5 and 10 percent will be hospitalized and 2 percent will die, so by vaccinating them you decrease the saturation in the hospitals, “he said. Of four possible vaccines there are only two. Definitely if something has characterized this pandemic, it is the constant changes in the information provided by the authorities, perhaps inspired by global changes such as access to vaccines. By the end of 2020, Panamanian officials announced that there were negotiations with three pharmaceutical companies (Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson) and one that would supply the COVAX system, but within days of reaching the middle of the year, Panama depends on two pharmaceutical companies. , Pfizer and AstraZeneca. Knowing the supply and delivery problems faced by these pharmaceutical companies, the specialists pointed out the importance of expanding the portfolio and negotiating with other pharmaceutical houses that developed effective vaccines such as Sputnik V and Sinovac, but after being approved for emergency use in the country, another setback, the authorities of the Ministry of Health announced that they did not reach agreements with either of the two. Rebollón explained that one of the reasons why Panama could not reach agreements is because the priority is the countries where the studies of the vaccine, then if these studies were not carried out in Panama, no matter how much money you put on the table, you will be last in line. He reiterated that “the important thing is that the people who are going to die have access to the vaccine, that is the priority, the rest is not so important, those who are going to die first and then the rest are protected.” While, Sandoval declared that it seems counterintuitive to him that the Minsa and the Directorate of Pharmacy and Drugs approve the emergency use of these vaccines, however, the paperwork does not allow timely agreements to be reached with the pharmaceutical industries and private companies to incorporate them into the Panamanian market.

He explained that studies of the Sinovac vaccine have shown that it is effective in minors, so he considers that its incorporation into the country should be examined.

“We have seen that the pharmaceutical industries are not meeting the deadlines proposed to the country, not only in Panama, but in the world, so my personal campaign like that of other colleagues who are experts in vaccines is to expand the portfolio of urgent vaccines in Panama and incorporate platforms such as the Chinese Sinovac vaccine, or the Russian Sputnik V and even the modern vaccine from the United States ”, he pointed out.

LOURDES MORENO: ‘THE INCREASE IN CASES MAY LEAD US TO THINK THAT WE COULD HAVE A THIRD WAVE’

Those vaccinated should not lower their guard against the coronavirus.

Dr. Lourdes Moreno, advisor to the Superior Office of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), did not rule out that Panama faces a third wave of coronavirus cases, given the increase in reports in recent days.

The doctor she said that although the numbers in terms of deaths, fatality percentage and number of hospitalizations is encouraging, it is also true that you cannot lower your guard.

“We cannot claim victory. The increase in cases in recent days can definitely lead us to think that we could have a third wave,” Moreno told Sertv.

In the last two days, the new positives have been above 500 cases.

Moreno stressed that the behavior of the virus is directly related to social behavior. In this line, she added that in the areas where there are promotions, something is not being done right.

“It is important that we all have that citizen awareness and know that we have to avoid parking lots and crowded places,” she said.

She added that, in the provinces with an increase in reports, the Minsa is aware that the measures were relaxed.

“At this moment, less than ever we can lower our guard, because we have some provinces in which the cases are definitely increasing,” she warned.

Regarding those vaccinated, the epidemiologist called on them to maintain biosecurity measures.

“Although there are already a certain number of Panamanians vaccinated, they should not lower their guard. Even those who already have their two doses, because there is a percentage of probability that they can acquire the disease, in its mildest forms,” he said.

COVID-19 CASES RISE SLIGHTLY IN SAN FRANCISCO, BETANIA AND BELLA VISTA: WHY IS IT DUE?

Minsa recommends not neglecting biosecurity measures.

The director of the Metropolitan Health Region, Israel Cedeño, stressed that, in the townships of Betania, Bella Vista and San Francisco, they report a slight increase in cases in recent days.

According to the doctor, the rise is sustained and the figures mark below 150 cases.

According to the latest daily report from the Ministry of Health (Minsa), in San Francisco there are 15 cases, in Bella Vista, 14, and in Betania, 10.

Cedeño attributes this slight increase to the mobilization and economic activity of these sectors.

“This increase is probably because it is an economically active area. The population that resides there is mobilized a lot inside and outside the township. If there are more infections it is because someone is letting their guard down, consciously or unconsciously,” he said.

The epidemiologist recalled that it is necessary to maintain physical distancing, hand washing, in addition to the use of a mask and facial screen.

Regarding the acceptance of the facial screen, which has been mandatory on public transport since Monday, May 17, Cedeño mentioned that people have had a “high attachment” to the measure.

“This week the call for attention is being made to those who do not use it because we are starting, but we will have to sanction, because we cannot wait for them to become aware,” he said.

This Wednesday the application of the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine was launched in the circuits at 8-4 and 8-7.

PFIZER WORKS TO PRESENT IN TWO MONTHS NEW DATA ON A BOOSTER VACCINE AGAINST COVID-19

Those who receive the Pfizer vaccine will likely need a booster dose 8 to 12 months after receiving the second dose.

New data on a booster vaccine from Pfizer Inc. for Covid-19 could be released in the next two months, according to the CEO of the pharmaceutical company.

“Right now we are in the middle of trials, and the data is coming in as we speak,” Albert Bourla said Wednesday during an Axios panel on vaccine development. “Within a month or two we should have enough data to talk about it with greater scientific certainty.”

Bourla’s comments come as drug manufacturers move quickly to keep up with variants that can help the virus bypass existing vaccines from Moderna Inc., partners Pfizer and BioNTech SE and Johnson & Johnson.

Those who receive the Pfizer vaccine will likely need a booster dose 8 to 12 months after receiving the second dose, Bourla said. People who got their second Pfizer vaccine eight months ago “may need a third,” he said. But he added that the company is waiting for the data to confirm it.

In early May, Moderna unveiled two types of booster vaccines that showed promise in mid-phase trials. The two types of boosters studied have generated higher levels of antibodies against the Brazilian and South African variant, Moderna reported in a statement.

One of the boosters is an additional low-dose injection of your current vaccine. The other is adapted to the South African strain.

IATA Travel Pass is a mobile application that helps passengers to store, manage and verify their Covid-19 test certificates and, in a next step, also vaccination certificates.

Starting this Wednesday, May 19, Panama begins using the application, IATA Travel Pass, for the digitization of COVID-19 tests, allowing travelers to use it for documentation checks upon arrival in the country.

The mobile tool allows travelers to use a digital register for documentation checks upon arrival in the country. The passenger will only have to show the IATA Travel Pass, without any type of contact.

What does the IATA Travel Pass incorporate?

In addition to checking travel requirements, the application will also include a registry of tests and, eventually, vaccination centers, making it more convenient for passengers to find test centers and laboratories in their place of departure that comply with the testing standards and vaccination requirements of your destination.

Likewise, the app will allow authorized laboratories and test centers to safely send test results or vaccination certificates to passengers.

IATA Travel Pass is currently only available for IOS devices, the launch of Android is expected at the end of May.

The pilot plan in Panama will begin this Wednesday with the clients of flight IB6339 Madrid-Panama.

What must travelers do to use the IATA Travel Pass?

  • Check that they meet the requirements and download the application.
  • Create your account through biometrics, link your passport and select your next flight.
  • Book an appointment to carry out your COVID-19 test in one of the currently collaborating laboratories or centers located in Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga or Seville and that the airline hopes to soon expand to other Spanish cities.
  • Upon receipt of the test results, IATA will confirm that customers comply with all sanitary documentary requirements at their destination.
  • At the airport they will only have to show the IATA Travel Pass confirmation message “OK to travel”, which will improve your travel experience.
  • Customers will also have to provide the rest of the documentation (passport, ID, visa, etc.) to be able to travel.

The Ministry of Health of Panama (Minsa), reported that as of May 24, travelers who wish to enter the country will be able to present their digital vaccination document and a negative COVID-19 test carried out 48 hours in advance through the Travel Pass platform of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

It should be noted that Panama is the first country in Latin America to use this application and it is the second route for Iberia, the first airline to launch this tool between Europe and Latin America.

PANAMA DISCLAIMS TO BUY RUSSIAN AND CHINESE VACCINES AGAINST COVID-19

Panama approved, last April, the emergency use of the Sputnik V vaccine.

Panama ruled out the purchase of Sinovac from China and Sputnik V from Russia against covid-19 because their developers could not deliver them in the time that the Central American country required, an official spokesperson said on Monday.

“The Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Health sat down on multiple occasions to discuss access to the vaccine for Russia and China, and they did not have availability at the time we required,” said the national secretary for Science, Technology and Innovation and advisor of the Panama Vaccine Research Consortium, Eduardo Ortega-Barría.

Panama approved, last April, the emergency use of the Sinovac and Sputnik V vaccines. According to official information released in February this year, the Panamanian government had asked Russia for 3 million doses of its vaccine.

If the doses of the Chinese and Russian preparations “could not arrive before July, August and September” of this year, they were “no longer necessary”, especially in light of the fact that Panama consolidated “agreements” to access 9.2 million doses of the vaccines from Pfizer, AstraZeneca and the Covax mechanism, with mass deliveries “starting next July”.

“We have vaccines for 4.6 million people. If we vaccinate the entire country we need (doses) for 4.3 million. We have more vaccines than we really need,” added Ortega-Barría in statements to Telemetro.

Panama, with 6,296 deaths and 370,877 infections by covid-19, has applied 834,556 doses since the immunization plan started on January 20, with the pharmaceutical houses Pfizer and AstraZeneca.

Priority groups, including health workers, adults over 60, teachers, and pregnant women, among others, are being vaccinated with Pfizer, while AstraZeneca is being administered to men over 30 and women aged 50 and over who have been enrolled in a voluntary registry.

The authorities maintain that Panama agreed to purchase 7 million doses from Pfizer, the country’s main supplier; 1.1 million from AstraZeneca and another 1.1 million from the Covax mechanism, from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Government of Panama plans to invest 104.4 million dollars for the purchase of 9.2 million doses of vaccine, enough to guarantee the immunization of the population.

VACCINES ARE EFFECTIVE AGAINST “ALL VARIANTS” OF COVID-19, WHO SAYS

The Covid-19 does not yet allow the safe resumption of international travel.

The currently available and approved vaccines are so far effective against “all variants of the virus”, said this Thursday, May 20, the World Health Organization (WHO), which nevertheless asked to continue acting with “prudence” in the face of Covid- 19.

Although the health situation improves in Europe, Covid-19 still does not allow international travel to resume safely due to “a persistent threat and new uncertainties,” warned Hans Kluge, the WHO director for Europe.

“It is an unpredictable threat,” said Catherine Smallwood, head of emergency situations at WHO Europe. “The pandemic did not end.”

According to data from the institution, in the region as a whole (which reaches up to a part of Central Asia), the number of new cases fell 60% in one month, from 1.7 million in mid-April to 685,000 last week.

“We are going in the right direction, but we have to remain vigilant (…) the increase in mobility, physical interactions and meetings can lead to an increase in transmission in Europe,” insisted the regional director, stating without However, essential travel was still authorized.

The reduction of social restrictions has to be carried out in parallel with an increase in detection, tracing and vaccination.

“There is no zero risk,” Kluge reiterated. “Vaccines are perhaps a light at the end of the tunnel, but we cannot be blinded by this light.”

END NOTES:

This is Edward Jenner.

Mr Jenner was a frickin genius.  A man born before his time.  (17 May 1749 – 26 January 1823) He was an English physician and scientist who pioneered the concept of vaccines including creating the smallpox vaccine, the world’s first vaccine.  The terms vaccine and vaccination are derived from Variolae vaccinae (smallpox of the cow), the term devised by Jenner to denote cowpox. He used it in 1798 in the long title of his Inquiry into the Variolae vaccinae known as the Cow Pox, in which he described the protective effect of cowpox against smallpox.

In the West, Jenner is often called “the father of immunology”, and his work is said to have “saved more lives than the work of any other human”.  In Jenner’s time, smallpox killed around 10% of the population, with the number as high as 20% in towns and cities where infection spread more easily.  In 1821, he was appointed physician extraordinary to King George IV, and was also made mayor of Berkeley and justice of the peace. A member of the Royal Society, in the field of zoology he was the first person to describe the brood parasitism of the cuckoo. In 2002, Jenner was named in the BBC’s list of the 100 Greatest Britons.

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…

Watch for Aliens.
