We’ve been trying to go fishing to Gamboa for quite some time now. We have a small lake boat and it’s nice to get out and putz around in it for a few hours even if just to keep the motor in tiptop condition. A few months ago, after selling my XTrail, AKA “The Boat Hauler”, we had to get another hitch put on my wife’s SUV. Well, last month we finally got that done and everything was seemingly ready for us to go out on another Mikkelson Fishing Expedition! Last Saturday, we prepped gear with new line, selected lures, made a meal and snacks plan, ensured our clothes were laid out and batteries were charged. We also prepped all other standard take-along items like sun block, net, oar, scale, headgear, gloves, face masks, etc. Later that evening I nearly forgot to check if we had enough fuel – we did NOT. So, I ran out to fill one of the tanks and to get a few pints of boat motor oil.
Now we were set… …or so I thought. The one thing that I didn’t even think to check was the hitch itself. Our boat trailer is setup with a 1 7/8 “ hitch, but the ball that the installers put on my wife’s SUV was 2”. Even though I noticed this the night before, there was nowhere we were going to one before 5AM the following day. That’s right, no 24-hour Walmart in Panama.
The following day we went to our trusty, rusty Discovery Center and picked up the 1 7/8” ball early in the morning. Amazing to think that a $5.60 item held us back from fishing. The boys were distraught, but my accommodating queen suggested that we go fishing on Mother’s Day! Wow, that’s awesome. We were all pretty happy and ready to head out on Panama’s Mother’s Day celebration, December 8th. However…. Seemingly plagued by bad luck, Wednesday night we find out that my youngest boy Brandon had a major homework assignment due for Friday. And by major, I mean, he had to read the entire Romeo and Juliet novel in just a day. Sure, he knew all year long, but taking on my legacy, he too is a master procrastinator. And, being that it was Mother’s Day, we couldn’t just leave him home alone and there was no way in hell, I was going to get away with leaving out for fishing by myself either.
So, we have our sights set for Sunday. Come hell or highwater, we’re fishing… …have a great weekend!

INFORMAL SECTOR HAS BOOSTED THE COUNTRY’S ECONOMY IN 2022

PANAMA IS EXPERIENCING TRANSITION FROM RAINY TO DRY SEASON

PANAMA REPORTS MORE THAN 7,000 CASES OF DENGUE AND MORE THAN 5,000 OF MALARIA

WHY DO FUEL PRICES CHANGE IN PANAMA EVERY 14 DAYS?

Fishing is definitely my number one hobby, even if I haven’t been able to go out in a long time. Taking my boys out is what makes it the best. It almost isn’t even about catching fish although that certainly makes the day that much better.
