The Circle of Life, Possible Vaccine?, REMDESIVIR, May Take this to the Next Level!

Thursday, April 30, 2020

The circle of life moves along whether we choose to watch for it or not.  Hailing from God’s country in Northern Wisconsin, we lived amongst and witnessed the circle of life in our day to day lives.  Nature was a thriving part of everything we did from anxiously anticipating the ripening and falling of the ruby red McIntosh apples from our wild trees in the back yard or the thrill of spotting the arrival of the first Robin in the early spring.  A hike through the woods towards the end of October reveals the rubs, scrapes, and sheds of deer during the front end of their mating season or what we call “the rut”.  It’s all about nature’s way of giving, taking and giving again.  It symbolizes the universe being sacred and divine.  This is energy in its purest form pushing life through fauna and flora, recycling through absorption, then rebirth and so on.

I’ve lived in the suburbs of Panama City for roughly 15 of my 30 years in this wonderful country.  It’s not exactly the 40 acres of farmland and hardwoods I would prefer, but to me, it’s still perfect.  I’ve never been truly satisfied with the bustle of the bigger city.  Sure, the nightlife is fun and business is vital, but there’s nothing quite like being engulfed in nature to soothe your soul and keep you grounded.  And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, is that Panama’s circle of life is really no different than Wisconsin or anywhere else for that matter.  Here, we trade those McIntosh apples for our red or yellow marañones where we anxiously anticipate them to ripen and fall around the months of March and April.  With the changing of the seasons, we won’t see the return of the Robins, but instead, we watch the return of the migrating Monarchs as they fill the skies by the thousands.

My boys are just as curious as any other boys.  Brandon may be more inventive or outgoing than Brett, but they complement each other perfectly.  Brandon’s the “spotter” and Brett’s the “inspector”.  Out and about, Brandon will watch for changes to his surrounds and like a hound to its prey, he locks in, his pupils dilate and his heart pounds like the thundering hooves of a thousand wild stallions!!!  (Ok, that was a bit much.)  “Dad, I just saw a baby bird!”  “Where?”, I asked.  “Look Dad, over there on the sidewalk.  I think it’s in trouble.  I’m getting Brett!”  And off he goes to fetch his courageous brother to start another mission.  I saw the bird and then noticed what I believe were his “parents” watching from above as “baby bird” hopped along the sidewalk covered only by the shade of our neighbor’s mango tree.  Within seconds, the dynamic duo was crossing the street, defying the very essence of the executive decree for mandatory quarantine.  But, what did they care?  They were on a mission to save “baby bird”!  Crossing the hot asphalt, down the ditch and up to the cracked and offset cement sidewalk, baby bird could not be found.  “He’s gone, Dad, you were supposed to watch out for him!”  Oh great, now it’s MY fault.  “I’m sure he’s fine, buddy.  You see those two birds up there in the tree?  Those are his parents.  You may not be able to see him, but they can.  I can assure you that he’ll be ok.”  I could tell immediately that he wasn’t totally convinced.  Maybe it was my training in Neuro-Linguistic Programming or my time as a US Army Interrogator.  Or maybe because he asked me, “How can you be so sure of that, Dad, if you weren’t watching him?” as he sulked away to the safety of his bedroom.  That was yesterday.

This morning, the boys were on a new mission.  Instead of the classic “Search and Recover” missions that I was trained for, they were on a “Search and Preserve” mission.  We have several nests on our property, but I never wanted to snoop and interrupt their privacy; I mean, like, who knows what those crazy birds do in there, am I right??  The boys were going to inventory all of the nests and their contents.  It’s a great mission and I’m proud that they thought this one up on their own, but I was a bit worried as to how they’ll handle the knowledge that comes with experiencing the circle of life up close.  You see, the advantage of ignorance is that which you don’t know or see, can’t break your heart.  They counted 5 nests in the front of the house and moved along to the back of the house to continue when Brandon yells out to me, “Dad, I found a baby bird!”  I dropped the “hojaldra” that I snuck from the kitchen and ran to the back yard.  The boys were crouched behind the lime tree looking at a patch of grass we couldn’t mow last the weekend.  Nestled within that small patch was an even tinier “baby bird” from what we saw yesterday.

Ultra Little “Baby Bird”
Ultra Little “Baby Bird”

This one wasn’t hopping anywhere; it definitely wasn’t the same baby bird.  Then Brandon clarified, “Dad, baby bird was over there by the fence.  I went to get him, he freaked out and took off running to the neighbor’s yard.  Then I found this one!”  I looked up to the top of the house behind the lime tree, right above our find and low and behold I saw another nest.  And perched nearby said nest I saw, who I’m certain was, a very concerned momma bird looking down on us.  I immediately wondered about the other nest that I’d been monitoring and decided to snoop in on them.  (I already knew what they were up to, unlike those “other nests”, and their mom seemed ok with my snooping.)  There was only one “baby bird” in my nest.  I realized then that the one Brandon saw today, the one that freaked out and ran to the neighbors, that one was from this nest!  But where was the third one?  It wasn’t hard to figure out that it was MIA.  The circle of life was before us.

One of my three “baby birds”
One of my three “baby birds”

The question now was “what do we do with ultra-little baby bird”?  “Boys, it’s time we bring in the big guns on this one.  We’re going to have to consult with Mom!”  “Oh crap!”, said Brett Jr.    Quite frankly, I just wanted to pass this decision off to Mom. I knew we only had a few choices and with quarantine, that narrowed our choices down to just one.  In the wild, woodlands of northern Wisconsin, we would try to get the bird into its nest or we didn’t have access to the nest or know where the nest was, we had to leave it there.  As a Boy Scout, I knew that birds will still take food to their hatchlings even if they were out of their nests and would stay closeby to defend them against smaller predators.  Here, we couldn’t reach the nest however and if we left the ultra-little baby bird on the ground, one of my two dogs would get to it and that would be the end of that cycle.  Another option would be to call in some wildlife expert, but that wasn’t going to happen even if we didn’t have a quarantine.

And of course, Brett Jr said, “Oh crap!”.  He’s the quiet one.  He’s always been that way.  So when he speaks, it’s with purpose.  “Why ‘Oh crap!’, Brett?”, I asked.  “Because Mom is going to want to keep the bird and we’ll get stuck feeding it.  Or, she’ll keep it in your bedroom so she can feed it all night long and we won’t be able to sleep from all of the chirping.”  At this point I realized two very important things.  1.  Brett Jr is quicker than I thought at analyzing complex problems.  He knew the dire complications of bringing in the bird even though I also knew that his gentle heart really wanted to.  And 2. The boys can apparently hear everything that goes on in our bedroom after hours; I’m going to need to fix that.

We went to Mom and asked her for advice.  Her response was quick, measured, and with the spirit of a little girl, “Where is it?  What kind is it?  Where’s its nest?  What does it eat?  Can we keep it?  I’m calling my sister!”  Then she pointed at me and with the fervor of a First Responder, she said, “Get the bird and bring it in the house.”  I looked at Brett Jr and said, “Oh crap!”.  He just nodded.  Apparently, at some point during that 9-second diatribe, a decision was made.  As ALWAYS, I did what I was told and got the bird.  In the kitchen, I stood, while she dialed her sister and told her about the new addition to the family.  After a few minutes, bird still in hand, I fumbled a bit with the now cold hojaldra that I dropped earlier and finished that while hearing her laugh to her sister, “It definitely looks more like him.  It’s just not as ugly.”  Wait, what?  “Hey there sweety, I still have a warm, tiny bird in my hand.”, as I cleared my throat.  She quickly dug through one of her magical “stuff” drawers and found the perfect small basket, then grabbed a handful of leaves and grass only to cover that with a paper towel.  In a matter of a few seconds, we have now become bird rescuers.

Within minutes, we became experts on the study of Wildlife Rehabilitation.  And then within a few hours, we realized that feeding baby bird was NOT going to be a problem.  When I went to take this photo, I accidentally bumped the table and it was ready to eat AGAIN!

A face that only Mom could love

I think we’re set up to properly care for baby bird.  I’ll give updates.

Now, does anyone have any suggestions on how to muffle night time sounds through cement walls?

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS:

A CHINESE LABORATORY ALREADY PRODUCES A POSSIBLE VACCINE AGAINST THE VIRUS

In this picture taken on April 29, 2020, an engineer shows an experimental vaccine for the COVID-19 coronavirus that was tested at the Quality Control Laboratory at the Sinovac Biotech facilities in Beijing. – Sinovac Biotech, which is conducting one of the four clinical trials that have been authorised in China, has claimed great progress in its research and promising results among monkeys. (Photo by NICOLAS ASFOURI / AFP) / TO GO WITH Health-virus-China-vaccine,FOCUS by Patrick Baert

AFP Sinovac Biotech is one of four Chinese laboratories authorized to undertake clinical trials. Although its vaccine has not yet been tested, the private group says it is ready to produce 100 million doses a year to fight the virus, which appeared in China in late 2019.

In 2009, it overtook its competitors and became the first in the world to launch an H1N1 swine flu vaccine. In their vast facilities in Changping, on the large periphery of the capital, laboratory technicians control the quality of the experimental vaccine, based on inert pathogens, already produced in thousands of copies. And it even has a name: “Coronavac”. Although the treatment is still far from homologation, the manufacturer must demonstrate that it is capable of producing on a large scale and subjecting lots to the control of the authorities. Hence the launch of production even before the end of clinical trials. In the midst of the global race to find the long-awaited antidote, less than a dozen laboratories have so far started human trials, according to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Among them, Sinovac, who assures that he obtained promising results in monkeys, before administering his serum for the first time to 144 volunteers in mid-April in Jiangsu (east). But the laboratory founded in 2001 will not comment on the date on which its half-milliliter injection will possibly be marketed.

“It is the question that everyone asks,” acknowledges Liu Peicheng, director of the brand. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the production of a vaccine can take between 12 and 18 months. The Chinese laboratory, which employs a thousand employees, expects to obtain the first results on the safety of its product by the end of June, within phase 1 and 2 tests, Meng Wining, director of international relations, told AFP. These tests consist of verifying that the vaccine is not dangerous for humans. To ensure its effectiveness, a phase 3 trial must be performed on virus carriers. The problem is that now “only a few cases a day are reported in China,” says Meng. Unless there is a second epidemic wave in China, the group is going to have to test it with positive diagnoses abroad. “We are currently in contact with several countries in Europe and Asia,” he says. “A phase 3 trial normally involves several thousand people. It is not easy to obtain this figure, in any country,” he warns. The group undertook in the south of Beijing the construction of a production factory with a capacity of 100 million doses, which should be operational before the end of the year. “We work day and night, we work three shifts, which means we don’t waste a minute,” says Meng. Taken to the world population, a possible Sinovac vaccine would not be enough to protect the planet. But Meng says his group, which is listed on Nasdaq, is open to “collaborations” with his foreign partners, to whom he sells his flu or hepatitis vaccines. Being the first to provide a remedy against COVID-19 would be a kind of revenge for China, eager for it to forget that the pandemic arose on its soil.

“We get a lot of support from the Chinese government,” says Meng.

“Not a lot of money”, but cooperation with public institutes from which Sinovac obtains viral strains. Beijing also approved the clinical trial of three other experimental vaccines: one launched by the Military School of Medical Sciences and the CanSino biotechnology group, another by the Institute of Biological Products and the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the city where the new coronavirus was born, and the last by the China Biotics group, which started trials on Tuesday among 32 volunteers.

PARLATINO ASKS FOR ALL WORKERS AFFECTED BY CRISIS TO BE RESTITUTED

The Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino) asked this Thursday that the workers affected by the COVID-19 crisis be “all restored to their posts as the emergency is conjured”, which will cause them to lose 12.4% of hours of work in America according to the ILO. In a statement on the occasion of the commemoration of International Workers’ Day tomorrow, the Parlatino called on employers “at all levels, so that in no way prolong the short-term effects of the pandemic and decrease the rate of jobs and hiring, thus generating serious socioeconomic and humanitarian effects. ” The organism integrated by 23 regional parliaments reiterated the request to the public powers “to apply specific actions oriented to support, immediately and as much as necessary, salaried workers, self-employed workers, informal workers, the unemployed and companies, especially small and medium-sized companies, and the sectors most affected by this pandemic. ” The Parlatino also recognized the “enormous, truly heroic effort” of the workers “who, putting their lives at risk, go to their workplaces to keep basic services and the essential supply chain running” in the countries where they have been quarantine tax. The International Labor Organization (ILO) said on Wednesday that it calculates that in the second half of the year due to confinements and other measures to stop the spread of the new coronavirus, 12.4% of working hours in America will be lost. , the most affected region of the world. America, along with Africa, was also the region with the highest proportion of informal workers with lost income (81%) in the first month of measures of social isolation against the pandemic, followed by and in Europe and Central Asia (70%). The crisis has had a special negative impact on the informal economy, where more than half of the world’s workers live (2,000 of the global 3.3 billion), so the ILO estimates that 1.3 billion workers are “at risk imminent to see their sources of livelihood disappear, “the agency added.

REMDESIVIR, A MEDICINE THAT ACCELERATES RECOVERY IN PATIENTS WITH COVID-19

Remdesivir accelerates recovery times in patients with COVID-19, according to a major US-led trial, making it the first drug with proven benefits against the disease.

This is what you need to know about this drug.

Remdesivir is a broad-spectrum experimental antiviral made by the American pharmacist Gilead Sciences, which was first developed to treat Ebola, a viral hemorrhagic fever.

It enthused the researchers in a 2016 primate study and was then used in a major trial in the Republic of the Congo, comparing it to three other drugs.

That study ended in 2019 because it failed to increase survival rates like two other monoclonal antibodies, laboratory-designed immune system proteins.

In February, the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) announced that remdesivir would once again jump on the scene in an investigation into SARS-CoV-2, the pathogen that causes COVID-19, because it was promising in tests. in animals against the SARS and MERS coronaviruses.

NIAID announced the results of its trial Wednesday, which included 1,000 people and concluded that hospitalized patients with respiratory problems from COVID-19 treated with the drug improved faster than cases receiving a placebo.

Patients who took the drug recovered 31% faster.

“Although the results were clearly positive, from a statistically significant point of view they were modest,” Anthony Fauci, NIAID chief scientist, said Thursday.

In other words, it works but it is not a miracle cure.

However, it is considered a “proof of concept” that could pave the way for better treatments, much like the first drugs developed to treat HIV in the 1980s, much less effective than those currently used.

The results suggested that remdesivir could reduce mortality rates from 11.7% to 8.0%, but these data are considered less statistically reliable.

The findings from the U.S.-led trial were announced the same day that The Lancet published the results of a study with the same drug but smaller that found no statistical benefit in remdesivir.

This study involved just over 200 people from Wuhan, China, and was a randomized controlled trial, considered the highest standard in treatment evaluation.

But it is also noteworthy that this study had to be stopped for not recruiting enough patients and its size was approximately five smaller than the study led by the United States.

“The trial numbers are too small to draw firm conclusions,” said Stephen Evans, a medical statistics expert at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

Remdesivir has already been given to patients around the world, in clinical trials and also outside of them, in response to Gilead’s “compassionate use requests” for access in some emergencies.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to issue an “emergency use authorization” shortly, which would further expand its use, prior to its formal approval.

“I was talking to the FDA commissioner yesterday afternoon, last night, and he’s moving very fast,” Fauci said.

“They haven’t made a final decision yet, they haven’t announced it, but I would say we’ll see it reasonably soon.”

Since the drug is complex to manufacture and is given by injection rather than by pills, there are questions about whether the supply will be limited in the first phase.

In an open letter released Wednesday, Daniel O’Day, the president of Gilead, reported that the company has 1.5 million doses ready or nearly finished.

“We had estimated that this would be 140,000 treatments based on a treatment duration of 10 days,” he said, but another trial showed that five days is as effective as using it in 10 days.

This means that “we can significantly increase the number of treatments available, which Gilead is committed to donating,” O’Day said.

Remdesivir belongs to a class of medication that directly attacks viruses.

It is what is called a “nucleotide analog” that mimics adenosine, one of the four basic components of RNA and DNA.

“The virus is not very careful with what it incorporates,” said virologist Benjamin Neuman of Texas A&M University.

“Viruses normally try to go fast and change speed as a precaution,” he warned.

Remdesivir is stealthily incorporated into the virus genome instead of adenosine, causing a short circuit in its reproduction process.

CLIENTS MAY HAVE UP TO A YEAR TO CATCH UP ON THEIR ELECTRICITY BILL

After the National Government, together with the distribution companies, made the decision to apply measures in the payment of electricity service in the face of the coronavirus crisis, customers will be given a period to keep the account up to date.

Esteban Barrientos Moreno, general manager of ENSA, a subsidiary of the EPM Group, explained that once the agreed period ends, the client has to go to the offices and make a payment arrangement.

“We are going to give clients deadlines to pay off their debt and, according to their capacity, they will also be given just enough time, which may be 2.4, 6 or 12 months,” he told Panama América.

He assured that he will not be charged interest, nor the guarantee deposit, nor will he be reported to the Panamanian Credit Association if the client does not pay for the three months that a continuous payment was not given.

He reiterated that during these three months the power will not be cut to anyone, however he added that this does not mean that the electricity is free because that invoice that has not been paid in the end will have to be paid.

Regarding customer complaints about high billing in March, Barrientos recommended that citizens consume what is necessary at this time, that they are more at home to avoid a rise in energy. “Any claim will be analyzed and if the client the reason will be recognized,” he added. ‘

470 – Ensa currently maintains a thousand clients. Of this total, 200 thousand clients have requested to receive their electricity bill by mail.

50% reduction will be received by customers who consume up to 300-kilowatt hours per month during the months of May to June. While those who consume from 301 onwards will have a 30% benefit.

ENDNOTES

This has been a long report already, so I’ll make this ENDNOTE short.  I’ve received good feedback from some great people and also from some new people who I’m sure are also pretty great.  After looking around the market, I don’t see many English language writers in Panama anymore.  I recall a time when three guys who were seemingly competing for the top spot in who could bash one another better. And out of those three, only one really did any true investigative journalism.  (No names need be mentioned.)

Recently, friends Michael Pierce and Joe Gayle told me that there really isn’t an English newspaper.  I haven’t looked very hard, but I think that if this daily update has gotten such good reviews, I may move this up to the next level and turn it into a free online subscription.  That way, once the report is written online, it can be automatically sent to your emails.  Any suggestions would be great; I’ll be updating on that decision as well.

In the meantime……….

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…  And by all means, STAY HOME!!…
