Well, I certainly got enough sleep last night; best in a while. So, if this report is subpar from norm, I have no more excuses… …although I’m sure I can dig something up given the energy I have today.
HOW TO CATCH SOMEONE IN A LIE.
I had originally planned on giving just an interrogator’s approach to obtaining the truth; the “Geneva Conventions” version. But I’ll also hand out techniques that you could use on a daily basis. This is the version my wife likes to call, “Brett’s cheap psychology”. She’s trying to belittle my methods by calling them “cheap” mostly when she realizes she’s just been defeated by the best. Muaaahahahaha.
The direct approach: More times than not, the direct approach is the best approach. You’d be surprised how many people want to tell you the truth, but they’re just waiting for you to ask. All the while, we’re devising a master plan to “get them to talk”, they’re just patiently waiting to confess to the most important question.
“Did you…?”
“Why yes, I…!”
It happens more often than you would believe. For this reason, one of the primary interrogation/interview techniques is the Reid Technique. Used by law enforcement agencies around the world, Reid’s first step requires a well thought out interview. There’s no jumping straight to low-swinging office lamps in a dark musty room where the corners are invisible and an enraged, energetic, yet weathered, chain-smoking, whiskey-laden street sergeant is screaming, “Where’s the kid!??! What’d you do to him, you son-of-a-bitch!?!??!” They start off by just asking direct questions.
The interview questions in the Reid technique are simple with a touch of genius. You start off direct, but not accusatory,
“If you had anything to do with this, now would be the time to tell me.”.
If they don’t confess, you move on to the interview questions, which should be formulated to elicit a very specific psychological response focused directly towards guilt or innocence. Here are examples of just a few of the questions to give you the gist (from an internal theft case):
QUESTION: Is there anyone in the company that is above suspicion and would not do something like this?
PURPOSE: Truthful subjects will usually eliminate individuals from suspicion whereas a deceptive subject would move towards a more ridiculous response like “Everyone is honest.” Or simply “myself”.
QUESTION: Why do you think someone would steal these computers?
PURPOSE: Deceptive subjects would refuse to speculate, whereas truthful subjects tend to discuss possible motives.
QUESTION: What do you think should happen to the person who did steal these computers?
PURPOSE: Truthful subjects usually offer appropriately strong punishments, while the guilty would give a response referring to what they would prefer to happen if you discovered it was him/her.
QUESTION: Do you think the person who did this would deserve a second chance under any circumstances?
PURPOSE: The truthful will most usually say, “No!”. The deceptive would give a weak rejection to the notion or perhaps entertain a possibility.
This technique employs a long list of questions and after taking into consideration the answers given as a whole, we can usually come up with a suspect. Given just these 4 questions, imagine what we would think who did it between these two different possible answers:
First, we have “Bob”:
Look man, everyone here is honest. I can’t think of anyone who would do something like this. But I suppose that if you did catch someone, you should take in to consideration the amount of time they have working here; that’s an important factor. Things like this happen all the time and a second chance is most definitely fair given the kind of people who work here.
Vs
Cleaning guy “Walter”:
I don’t think anyone is perfect. And I don’t like to point out anyone as it’s none of my business, but the people who have most access to that office are Bob, Mike and Jim. These computers are top of the line; they just came out and have one of the best-operating systems I’ve seen. They’re awesome, but hard to come by because of the price. My job is at jeopardy here and the company is talking about taking this loss out of everyone’s pay. When you catch whoever did this, send him my way first so I can kick his ass. Second chance? Are you kidding me? Lock the prick up, this has caused me and my family a lot of stress.
Given information like this, imagine interviewing ONLY Bob, Mike and Jim who you already knew were the only people who have access to the office. (You never give up the information that you already know.) Bob gives his near–confession above, but Mike and Jim give similar statements to what Walter gave you. Or maybe they don’t and instead they give you some convoluted statement, like Bob. Without getting Walter’s statement, you wouldn´t be able to confirm the information you were previously privy to. But more importantly, you wouldn’t have a baseline of an innocent worker to start from for the remaining interviews.
We fast forward and determine that out of the 12 employees we interviewed, Bob seems to be the only one holding back on us. So, we need to bring Bob in for further questioning, AKA “The Interrogation”. This is my favorite part because we get to bring out the car batteries, bamboo shoots and inverted planks with the accompanied rag and bucket of water… Nooooo, that’s not true. Actually, this is the toughest part. This is the part where the investigator/interrogator has to believe in his own heart that this subject is guilty. You can’t doubt it and you definitely can’t show the subject any hint of doubt either. I don’t mean that we’re looking to falsely accuse the subject, but any sign of weakness on your part and the subject could see that as their way to get away with it. If you’re going for the accusation, you have to be credible.
We start off by giving them a weak and strong alternative as to why we believe they did it. We already have a good amount of background on Bob, so we use that to come up with scenarios for the motive. And we monologue until they confess. Here’s an example:
“Bob… (you shake his hand and offer him a seat) thanks for taking the time to come back and talk with us. It’s been a long week and we’ve taken the time to talk to everyone, review video, analyze documentation and employee attendance sheets. (Important pause…) Bob, at this point, all of the information accumulated in our investigation indicates clearly that you’re the one who stole the computer. (NOTE: At this point, most will refute it, but you don’t allow them to do so. You continue monologuing. Of course, if they didn’t respond to that at all, then you almost definitely have your guy.) Now hold on there, Bob, give me a minute and I’ll explain myself… Bob, I’d like to think that this was only the first time that you did something like this. I mean, it’s not like you’ve been doing this for the 7 years you’ve worked here, stealing computers for personal profit, right Bob? (You raise your eyebrows, semi-judgementally) I understand how the economy is and how hard it is to make a living. (You wipe your forehead) Of course, if you ARE the type that has been stealing these computers for years, then there’s no reason for me to be talking to you. So, what is it, Bob, was this just the first time or have you been taking from this company for years?”
The interrogation would go on for as long as possible up to two hours, looking for attempts at denials from the subject, squashing those attempts and returning to the alternative themes as necessary until the subject confesses.
Obviously, there is a lot more to it, but that’s the basic overview of one of my favorite techniques.
OTHER TIPS ON GETTING THE TRUTH:
BODY LANGUAGE: There are thousands of books on the subject of body language. The more scientific they get, the easier it is for me to fall asleep reading them. Most have heard how if they look up and to the right it means “this” or if they slouch in their chair it means that. Crossing the arms, flatulence, falling asleep, tensing of certain muscles, etc etc etc. In poker, we call these “tells”, but in interrogation, we simply refer to it as “Nonverbal Behavior”. Everyone reacts with some form of nonverbal behavior, but if you don’t know the subject, you’re not going to determine whether their particular “NBs” is an indication of a lie or a truth. The best way to catch the nonverbal lies is to know their nonverbal truths. Start your interviews with a series of questions that you know the answers to or that the subject would have no reason to lie about. I like to ask them how they got to work in the morning. “Take me through the details.”, I’ll tell them. All the while they answer, I’m barely listening to the words, I’ll be more aware of what their body says as they tell me, “I rarely have breakfast, so I’ll grab a Malta Vigor, leave the house, walk down the street where I catch the minibus. Then, I get off at Via España and grab the metro to Albrook”, and so on… His nonverbal truths just told me that he sits upright and straight, the head is at a slight tilt yet its weight is proportionately supported on the neck. Tends to maintain good eye contact, but not to the point of it being uncomfortable. Legs were crossed loosely, but arms were open and projected forward. The vocal pattern was smooth and confident. Subject’s complexion is tight and although not smiling, corners of the mouth show a subtle upward curvature. With that, I now have a basis to determine drastic changes from this behavior.
JOB INTERVIEWS: Most people have to work and these same unfortunate souls (me included) have to work every month of their lives. One of the more common lies is lying about where they worked and when they worked. They want to beef up their resume when they have little or no experience in the area you’re hiring for. And sometimes, they’ve been out of work for a few months, so they either leave that time out or stretch the employment dates of another work experience to patch that hole. Consult with every single company they worked for and gave references for. Ask them the exact dates that the subject worked for them. By doing this menial task, we once discovered a time break of nearly 4 years that had previously been filled with fake companies, made-up odd jobs and over-exaggerated timelines. That was already enough to deny hiring the subject, but after further review they confessed that they had been in prison for that time because of gang-related activities.
NOTE!!!: If an interviewee lies on ANY part of their resume, do NOT hire them regardless of how “amazing” they were on the rest of their interviews and pre-employment reviews.
INCONSISTENCIES: You catch someone simply by knowing the truth and searching for inconsistencies. If you already know that Mike, Bob and Jim are the only people who go into a particular part of the office, but Jim denies having ever been there, something’s wrong with Jim and you need to look deeper. Or, if you talk to Jim and Jim says, “oh, we’re not the only people that come in here, Mary, Juan and Wilhelm come in here all the time”. That inconsistency needs to be reviewed. Maybe it was Juan who told you that only Mike, Bob and Jim go in there. Well, time to break out the battery cables with Juan. Some inconsistencies can be subtle and others could easily be overlooked if you assume too much or simply forget to ask important details. Be thorough, take your time and go back for another interview if you forgot to ask something the first time.
TOOLS: There are so many that love using the polygraph or other lie detection instruments. Yeah, they’re great, but they’re just tools and just like any tool, when used wrong, you can get poor results. I’m a polygraph examiner and I was trained by the best of the best. That’s not bragging, it’s just fact. Cleve Backster was a badass for bazillions of reasons. He set up the CIA’s first polygraph lab and was capable of hypnotizing the unsuspected including an incredulous Army Colonel from the Pentagon. A man out of time, he tested plants and determined in the 60s that they felt pain, understood affection and demonstrated telepathic awareness. He created the first method of measuring deception on the polygraph as well as the first series of logical questioning techniques. But what really made Mr Backster look like a badass in my eyes was how during the course I was in, he fell down an entire flight of stairs, severely breaking his hip, only to drag himself back up those stairs call for help. Oh, but there’s more… In the midst of that pain, the doctors told him to take at least a month off, but he (in his own words), “instructed the pain to subside, so I could continue my work”. And by “his work”, he meant to continue training our class just 3 days after breaking his hip. Yes sir, Bad… ASS!!!
TOP NEWS and TIDBITS
Will it be difficult to accept this new lifestyle?
Well difficult or not, it’s the new way we must live and care for ourselves. From the time we leave home and when we return, remembering to wash our hands, and the constant disinfection of everything we touch, our clothes, random items, and sometimes our vehicles when necessary.
There are so many questions that will continue to plague our thoughts. How long will this take? Will we be wearing masks all our lives, constantly disinfecting everything?
The truth is that whether this be momentary or indefinite is a matter of how seriously we decide to confront this. Lives are at stake, that which is our most precious commodity.
“Normal” is that which we accept. Our lives 20 years ago, were so much different than our lives today. And in another 20 years it will be so much more different still.
Each change is difficult and sometimes it takes time to accept it, but at this time of the Coronavirus it’s a matter of simply seeing what is happening around us and deciding, regardless of the lines in the supermarket, the delay in shopping in the premises, the annoying or tight mask or the fact that, when you arrive at your home, you practically have to undress to enter your home.
We are beings who adapt; throughout life we face situations that change our lives, take us out of our comfort zone, but that are necessary.

CNA REQUESTS TO INCLUDE ‘LEGAL SERVICES‘ IN PHASE 2 OF REOPENING
The National Bar Association (CNA), has requested the government authorities to include in phase 2 of reopening “legal services”, by virtue of the opening of jurisdictional activities by the Judicial Branch.
The main legal union in the country states that it is a reality that all auxiliary personnel of firms and individual law offices are required in their jobs since June 1, 2020, to face the opening of judicial offices and comply with the obligations of attention and care of the matters entrusted by citizens to lawyers.
“Organized law does not want this gap to result in any lawyer being fined or prosecuted for the opening of the law offices, therefore, we call for a timely correction,” says the CNA.
The union calls on the authorities to duly include legal services in Phase 2.
THE COVID-19 WILL BRING CHANGES IN THE REAL ESTATE SECTOR AND THE SALE OF HOUSING
The real estate market is already undergoing changes. There is an increase in the demand for affordable housing, while there is excess inventory for the market in general. From the Ministry of Housing and Land Management (Miviot) they foresee a high migration towards social interest housing, whose cost is 60 thousand balboas and to which the government provides a solidarity bonus of 10,000 balboas. They report that during these pandemic months there have been no changes in the resolutions, indicating that the procedures have been maintained. The monthly payments are from 180 to 200 dollars and people, even if it is with a minimum wage, can pay them and they will prioritize at home and that is what the banks know, who will also have to relax, explained the vice minister of housing, José Batista. And it is that in the residential market there is an excess of inventory, of about 24 thousand units that, according to the estimates of the Association of Real Estate Brokers and Promoters (Acobir), could take 3 to 4 years to be absorbed. According to Acobir president, Frank Morrice Arias, there are paralyzed works and this leads to the increase in costs associated with construction. Promoters are very likely to pass it on to the consumer.
The Miviot explained that in the midst of the pandemic, 20 preliminary projects have been approved for new urbanizations of social interest and they have received requests to change the use of land for this type of housing. More than 300 developers develop this type of housing nationwide. The social interest housing program contemplates an investment of 5 million per month, which is about 25 houses per day. Home developers are looking for alternatives and are calling for changes to the laws that govern them.
These topics are discussed in workshops. They ask to continue the international promotion of the country, and preferential interests for second homes. Despite the fact that at the recent fair of Acobir the transactions reached 180 million, the promoters explain that right now, it is very difficult to make transactions.
MOBILITY RESTRICTION ON SUNDAYS WILL DEPEND ON CITIZEN BEHAVIOR
The Government of Panama indicated that, depending on the behavior of the population during the first week of the removal of the quarantine, supplanted by the curfew, the Ministry of Health will decide whether it will be allowed that next Sundays, from June 7, there is no mobility restriction.
Next Sunday, May 31, the total quarantine will be maintained, the National Government said in a statement.
Likewise, it was decided to maintain sanitary fences and epidemic zones throughout the national territory imposed to control the spread of the disease; as well as the prohibition of walks to the beach, rivers, recreational pools, and other social and festive activities in public places.
The sanitary fences are established in La Pesa in La Chorrera; The Lakes in Capira; Santa María and the crossing of Ocú in Herrera, on the Costa Arriba and Costa Abajo de Colón and in Viguí, between Chiriquí and Veraguas.
On Friday, May 29, the Cabinet Decree will be promulgated, which includes all the measures approved by the National Government.
THE CONTROL POINT LOCATED AT THE ENTRANCE OF PEDASÍ WILL BE WITHDRAWN FROM MONDAY
The Municipality of Pedasí announced that starting at 7:00 a.m. Next Monday, June 1, the checkpoint that was located at the entrance of that district will be removed.
It is noteworthy that the implementation of this measure 74 days after the first positive case of coronavirus in the Republic of Panama was disclosed, has resulted in the fact that to date no case of COVID-19 has been registered within the district.
Likewise, it highlights that through this control point,
“135 adults were punished, including 99 men and 26 women, who were not complying with the executive decree. Similarly, 7 vehicles were removed by crane and 191 vehicles were returned, which they failed to support their entry into the Pedasí district, and the Ministry of Health was notified so that 117 people who were in infected areas will be duly monitored.”
On the other hand, the Municipality of Pedasí emphasizes that the use of a mask in public areas will be mandatory, the minimum social distance of 2 meters and frequent hand washing must be maintained.
In addition, it indicates that they will maintain the Pescaó pal Pueblo, Manos de Ayuda and Pedasí Humanitario programs, for the benefit of the families of the district.

THE SANITARY FENCES OF AZUERO WILL REMAIN, INSURES THE GOVERNOR OF HERRERA
The sanitary fences of Santa María and Ocú, in Herrera, will be maintained beyond June 1, the day that the quarantine was lifted nationwide. This was announced by Víctor Roca Cuan, Governor of Herrera, who pointed out that these fences will not only be maintained, but will be reinforced. Roca Cuan said that the idea is to control the access of people from other regions and that they are not moved by their labor interest. He assured that Herrera has remained with very few cases of Covid-19 and the idea is to prevent the spread of the disease in the populations of the province.
Meanwhile, the regional director of health of the province of Los Santos, Ayvar Hernández, announced that, along with the governor of Los Santos, Rubén Villarreal and the mayors, a request was made to the Minister of Health, Rosario Turner to allow him the continuity of the checkpoints at the entrances to the province of Santeña. These checkpoints are that of the bridge over the La Villa river, that of Cabras that connects Pesé and that of Macaracas. Hernández announced that these checkpoints would attract people who come from other provinces and are positive to Covid-19, and as has been done since day one, follow-up and keep them in quarantine to prevent them from being agents. transmitters of the virus.
In the province of Herrera, 16 cases of the new coronavirus and 18 in Los Santos have been registered.
THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR READS PLANS TO ADAPT TO THE NEW NORMALITY
The construction industry moves millions of dollars, so, in the midst of the pandemic, where it has been hit hard, it is preparing with the appropriate measures to resume work in the new normal.
Jorge Lara, president of the Panamanian Chamber of Construction (Capac) reiterated that construction moves 12 billion dollars annually, one billion dollars monthly, so that being paralyzed has a great impact in the country.
According to Capac, there may be more than a thousand projects stopped in the country due to the health crisis caused by COVID-19. Meanwhile, on Monday, June 1, block 2 will resume work in the new normal, however, the National Government has been emphatic that this group includes the construction of prioritized public infrastructure and with the approval of the Ministry of Health ( Minsa).
According to the Ministry of Public Works (MOP), there are at least 29 projects that will be resumed with the entry of this second block. Block 3 includes the construction of the private sector. Lara said that a guide has been prepared so that the works can be followed up and the workers can be adapted to this new way of resuming their work. The committees will be trained so that the norms are complied with. He stressed that it is necessary to create awareness of the measures that will be implemented to counter the contagion of COVID-19.
One of the measures analyzed is the deferred work schedule, to avoid crowds. Lara said that they hope to know what works will be carried out in block 2 to adapt the personnel. He argued that the construction industry expects an economic injection, because companies have commitments and creditors waiting. He added that the Capac Expo Habitat 2020 promotion campaign has been launched, which will be virtual for the month of September, because there is still a need for housing.
PH’S QUESTION HOW THE REOPENING IN SOCIAL AREAS WILL WORK
“With this news, that on June 1 this reopening process begins in the second block, many inquiries have arisen from the horizontal properties. Are swimming pools, gyms, playgrounds part of this second block? It is not clear to the horizontal property. And what is the capacity to calculate 25%? Is it according to the distance, or according to the furniture capacity of each of these areas? ”Asked Mario Vargas, PH administrator.
We raise these questions with the Metropolitan Director of Health and Epidemiologist, Israel Cedeño. He assured that the protocols to follow are still programmed with the Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning (Miviot).
“We have already been discussing it for about 3 weeks with the Miviot. We are working on an operating manual on how the PHs are going to work, ”said Cedeño. Sports like tennis or volleyball can be practiced. As for the pools, they will require a certification. “With the opening of the second block, it is very clear that any type of sport that does not include physical contact can be performed,” Cedeño specified.
Dr. Cedeño pointed out that the reduction of the risk of contagions will depend on the personal measures that each individual applies, and mainly that the administrations of social areas provide articles such as masks to those who do not wear it.

CONEP PRESIDENT DISMISSES FALSE NEWS ABOUT WORKING HOURS IN THE NEW STANDARD
The president of the National Council of Private Enterprise (Conep), Julio De La Lastra, said that the message and the audio that is circulating on social networks is false, about a measure by the private sector to propose to workers to work eight hours and only pay them four hours. De La Lastra said they have prepared a series of proposals to rescue companies and keep jobs.
“At no time has it occurred to the private sector to propose such outrage, considering that workers work eight hours and are paid only four, it is not only immoral, but inhumane,” said the president of the business union.
As the blocks of economic activities are lifted, the companies prepare their biosafety protocols to avoid COVID-19 infections.

STATUS UPDATE
PANAMA ACCUMULATES A TOTAL OF 12,131 DETECTED CASES OF INFECTION AND 320 DEATHS BY COVID-19
- 12,131 positive cases
- 232 new cases
- 320 deaths
- 4,072 home isolation
- 281 are hospitalized in ward
- 79 are hospitalized in intensive care
- 7,379 clinically recovered
The number of deaths due to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) in Panama increased to 320 for this Thursday, May 28, and 232 new cases are counted to make a total accumulated of 12,131.
The Ministry of Health of Panama (MINSA) announced that 171 cases are included in the total accumulated confirmed cases, which correspond from May 22 to 26 notified by the Social Security Fund (CSS).
Brett’s Comment: It may or may not be the intention of the government to deceive their people, but if they’re recording 403 people who were detected positive for the virus today, then just say that. Don’t divide it in two parts 232 and 171. None of these numbers are literally from “today” anyways. These are the results that came in today after waiting several days for them. These people who they’re saying came up positive, were tested 10 days ago and some 3 days ago, but none were tested literally “today”. So regardless of whether they came from one batch or another, just give the total and be done with it.
She details that a total of 4,072 patients are currently in-home isolation, 281 people are hospitalized in the ward and there are 79 patients in the intensive care unit.
There is a total of 7,379 people have recovered clinically.
The Ministry reiterates that starting next Monday, June 1, the opening of Block 2 of economic activities will begin as part of the new normality, emphasizing that it will be imperative to take into account at all times the biosecurity means such as physical distancing, constant washing of hands with soap and water, the use of face masks, alcohol gel and staying home if you do not have to go out, this as a tool to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“It is important to emphasize that the new normality is a systematic, gradual but asymmetrical process, in which each person must also ensure their safety and that of their family environment,” the entity said in a statement.
She also points out that the Ministry will remain vigilant that the businesses comply with the regulations set forth in the established protocols, for the safety of customers.

ENDNOTES
Queen Sayira was surprisingly inspired today. It has been a rough couple of days for all of us lately and menial things like cooking and cleaning kinda get old after a while. Even bathing every day gets to be quite the chore when you don’t go anywhere or have to meet anyone. I spoke to a colleague today who said that he even had to stop doing Zoom meetings because he just gave up on the whole “combing your hair to look pretty” ritual altogether.
Brandon confessed to me today that instead of actually showering, sometimes he’ll just go into the bathroom, turn the water on and sit on the toilet for 5 minutes just to make it seem like he was showering. That kid LOVES the water. It was a sad moment indeed. So, we finished talking, I put away the interrogation battery cables and asked Brett if it was the same for him.
“No, Dad, but if you put the bamboo away, I’ll tell you my confession.”
“Yeah, sure, anything”, as I crossed my fingers.
“I only pretend to be in my virtual math classes.”, he said as he hung his head in shame.
“Well, how do you get away with it? How doesn’t the teacher know? What do you do to pretend? We see you sitting at the terminal with the teacher online!”, I was sincerely puzzled.
“I just turn the sound way down and I meditate.”…. wow. Mind. Blown.
By no means is any of that any good, but we can work with it. A few adjustments here a few hidden cameras there to measure nonverbals and I’ll fix those problems.
But what was really cool today is that Queen Sayira has awoken the inspiration beast from within and has begun to lay the foundations of a few culinary masterpieces outside her typical cultural comfort zone. She made stuffed peppers!!
Oh yeah, don’t they look amazing?? She really did a great job. Albeit, these here, in this picture, are NOT the ones that she made. Nope, Queen Sayira was adamant about me not taking a picture of her creation and definitely not posting it on any of my articles. I think her exact words were,
“I don’t care how much you liked it, if you post any photos, you’ll be banished from my kingdom!”.
And as the old adage goes, “Happy wife, saves your life.”, or something like that.
The best thing about this recipe is that you can get these ingredients in any store in Panama with ease.
