The weekend started with a plan, just like any weekend should.  Being on this relaxed lockdown is a lockdown nonetheless.  But, I’ve not only gotten used to it, I’ve actually come to enjoy it.  It’s the sort of enjoyment I’d entertain as being similar to being given the privilege of reading books while in prison, or being allowed to choose between white or dark meat after your plane crashes in the Andes mountains and after being stranded for over a month you’re forced to… nope, just kidding, not going to finish that sentence.  I think the first example made my point.

So, my plan started with a list.  Mind you, I start writing my weekend adventure lists on Monday and add to it as I go along.  I usually start off with hobbies and by the end of the week, I’ve included all of the repairs or maintenance that I’ve been putting off for a while… …like some of them have been put off for several years.

My list starts like this:

  1. Finish making the remaining cedar clocks.
  2. Put the remaining bottle lamps together.
  3. Clean guns.
  4. Make tables for chopsaw and a table for the table saw.

Then, as the week goes on, I start noticing other things that need to be done around the house.

  1. Finish cleaning out the shed.
  2. Paint shelf and hang in shed.
  3. Fix bathroom toilet.
  4. Fix toilet in the office.
  5. Oh hell, just fix all of the damn toilets!

By the end of the week, I get rambunctious and start adding tasks that can only get done if it doesn’t rain and/or if the planets are aligned in my favor.

  1. Clean my closet area… (…yeah, like THAT’s ever gonna get done.)
  2. Prep boat for fishing next week – mechanic hasn’t answered his phone.
  3. Build a new pantry.
  4. Build a new kitchen.
  5. Cut lawn in the back yard.
  6. Trim lemon tree.
  7. Prune “hierba limon”.

A formidable list indeed.  But, a typical weekend just the same.  What makes it a typical weekend is that the list from points 10-16 are all the same, weekend after weekend.  What also makes it a typical weekend is the fact that I haven’t even added the “honey-do” list that gets thrown at me Friday afternoon.

Friday, Sept 4, 1900hrs – “Hey snookums…”, oh crap I’m in trouble… “I need you to go to the bank for me.”, see continued.

“It’s a little too late for that, don’t you think?”, I retorted.

Queen Sayira just stared at me.

“Oh cmon, that was funny.”, I assured her.

“No, it wasn’t.  I need you to go to the bank tomorrow and pay for school before noon tomorrow otherwise we get charged for late payment if we pay after Sept 5.”, she assured me.  There’s a gender-improper saying, “Man plans and God laughs.”.  In this case, it’s more like “Brett plans and the Queen just doesn’t give a damn.”

So Saturday started with breakfast, me waiting for vouchers to be filled out, checks to be written and a game plan to be made for my trip to TWO banks and off I went.  Missions were accomplished and I was home to hit my list by noon.

I decided to tackle “#5 Finish cleaning out the shed” as I got a good start on it last weekend and it shouldn’t take that long anyways.  Tandem to that task, “#6 Paint shelf and hang in shed” was necessary as it was going to be hung in the shed.  The shed won’t get done if that’s not done.  Besides, how long could that take as I had my new-fangled paint gun and all kinds of paint to tackle the task?  Well, I have an answer to that question.  It takes a really long fricking time!  Mostly because I forgot the “Dad, can I help with that?”, factor.  Whenever Brandon asks to help, it’s best you say yes as we may not get that chance later in the day.

Dad, can I help with that?

The bottom line is that after bank trips, painting and cleaning, I barely made a dent in my own to-do list.

Sunday morning I was sore.  My workout on Friday was leg day, then add the strain of carrying and hauling heavy items in the shed, painting, etc and it’s inevitable for me to wonder if I’m going to be able to put my socks on by myself… …in short, I went sock-less on Sunday.

A bit frustrated that I hadn’t even made a dent yet in the list, we sat down for breakfast which was absolutely wonderful.  Queen Sayira had scored some blueberries and kiwi which we hadn’t gotten in a while.  But the best part, the part that made the rest of the day quite amazing was when Brandon offered his version of a “Bad Son Joke”.  Bad Son Jokes are like Bad Dad Jokes, but they’re extremely infantile, usually aren’t that funny and are almost always told wrong.  “Dad, wanna hear a joke?”, he asked with this huge beaming Brandon-smile.  “Yes, of course I do!  Like, who wouldn’t?!?”, I told him dreading what was to come.

It went kinda like this:   “What’s a ghost’s favorite ice crea….  oh crap, I said it wrong!” and his smile changed from happy to disgusted-with-himself.  Brett Junior rolled his eyes and while knife-handing his brother said, “how could you screw that up, we practiced all morning!?” I was rolling by this time.  “So, let me guess, the joke was supposed to be ‘What’s a ghost´s favorite dessert?’ and the answer is ‘I scream!’, right?”, I asked.  “Yeah… …wait, I can think of another one, just give me a minute!”, he said.  “Oh heck no, you’re only one bad joke per day.”, I advised.

It’s not easy to put on paper just how happy this minor morning interaction made me.  I can’t count the number of times I laughed to myself about it.  Even as type, the amount of joy greatly surpasses the pulsating pains in my lower lumbar.  (I still don’t have socks on.)

Other than the shelf and the shed, I did find time to mow the lawn, but alas, my list barely had a dent in it by Sunday night; 3 out of 16 still ain’t too bad for the typical weekend.

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS

Yoli’s Summary

Health authorities are concerned about the upcoming flu season, as two viruses would be stalking the public at the same time.

Getting vaccinated can help conserve potentially scarce health care resources.

While it is not possible to say for sure what will happen in the fall and winter, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believes that influenza viruses and the virus that causes COVID-19 are likely to be propagating.

The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get a yearly flu shot, but can I get the flu and COVID-19 at the same time? Experts answer yes.

“You may have the flu, as well as other respiratory illnesses, and COVID-19 at the same time. Health experts are still studying how common this can be, ”says the agency. For now, there is a test that can detect both flu and COVID-19 at the same time.

Will a flu vaccine protect me against COVID-19? CDC answers these important questions.

The flu vaccine does not protect against COVID-19; however, they have been shown to reduce the risk of illness, hospitalization, and death. Getting a flu shot this fall will be more important than ever, not only to reduce your risk of getting the flu, but also to help conserve potentially scarce healthcare resources.

Does the flu vaccine increase your risk of getting COVID-19?

There is no evidence that getting a flu vaccine increases your risk of getting sick from a coronavirus, such as that caused by COVID-19.

Should someone suspected of having COVID-19 or having COVID19 be given a flu vaccine?

No. The vaccine should be postponed (postponed) regardless of whether they have symptoms, until they have met the criteria to stop their isolation. When scheduling or confirming appointments for vaccination, patients should be instructed to notify the provider’s office or clinic in advance if they currently have or develop any symptoms of COVID-19.

The rule states that employers will authorize the mobility of their workers through notes, which must contain the name, identification number or passport of the employee, accompanied by his work permit, if applicable, residential address and place. of work.

These authorizations must be on letterhead and signed by the responsible person. Therefore, safe conduct will not be issued for this economic activity. Workers will carry these authorizations in the event of mobility restriction measures.

The operation of the projects is ordered from Monday to Saturday, with the exception of those regions that maintain established special curfews.

They are asked to comply with the guidelines for the return to normality established by Resolution No. 405 of May 11, 2020 and the Health Guidelines for post-COVID-19 operations, issued by the Ministry of Health; as well as the resolutions issued by the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development.

Employers must provide their workers with biosafety implements, such as alcoholic gel, masks, gloves, among other essentials, according to the protocols and standards issued on this matter by the health authority.

Companies will be able to gradually reintegrate their workers up to a maximum of five hundred workers per construction project. The refund will be made according to the needs of the reactivation of the project. In case of requiring an increase of more than five hundred workers per project, it must have the authorization of the Ministry of Health.

Regarding the working hours, the Decree determines that for activities that require the physical presence of workers, it will be from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Likewise, for a period of one month, from the effective date of this Decree, the extension of the working day through overtime will not be allowed.

In point nine, the decree establishes that construction companies will carry out antigen or PCR tests on a minimum of 50% of the workers to be reinstated in each project, prior to the start of the reactivation of the work. Every 14 days it is recommended to carry out these tests randomly among workers. And companies will keep a record of workers who are tested, as well as their general data, the date it was performed and the results.

In addition, 398 people have been recovered and 167 remain as active cases, according to the Epidemiological report of yesterday, Friday, September 4.

Despite the fact that active patients exceed more than 100, Hernández considers that the reopening of certain activities has not been the cause of the increase in cases, of which 4 are hospitalized in the intensive care room.

“We have had an increase in cases this week as a result of a cluster in the Las Tablas jail and thank God we are still with a single death in the entire province,” Hernández said.

Regarding the cluster of the prison located in Las Tablas, the representative of the Minsa in the region detailed, that so far there are 52 active cases, which were transferred from the penitentiary center to a gym precisely in that district, while they are in quarantine, and are under the custody of custodians of the Directorate of the Penitentiary System.

There are no more sanitary fences or checkpoints

PANAMA IS WAITING FOR A GERMAN VACCINE TO START A TRIAL WITH 250 VOLUNTEERS

Panama is only waiting for the arrival of the vaccine from the German laboratory CureVac to begin.

Panama is only waiting for the arrival of the vaccine from the German laboratory CureVac to begin, predictably next week, the inoculations of the first volunteers of a phase 2 study to clinically test the efficacy against COVID-19, researchers involved in the draft. The protocol to execute the vaccine research project and the call for 250 volunteers have been completed, and it only remains for the laboratory supplies to arrive in the country to start the trial, said members of the Panama COVID-19 Vaccine Research Consortium. The volunteers, a heterogeneous group in which there are quite a few health and medical personnel as explained this Friday, were recruited by the Consortium, which is made up of the Center for Vaccines and Clinical Research (Cevaxin) and the Institute for Scientific Research and Services of High Technology (Indicasat-AIP).

The infectologist Xavier Sáez-Llorens, spokesman for the Consortium and principal investigator of the clinical trial, said that they have confirmed that by Sunday they should “be waiting, if all goes well, for the arrival of the vaccine.”

“The vaccine has already left Germany and right now it is in the United States,” said Sáez-Llorens, who indicated that once it arrives, it should be removed from Customs and verify that it complied with the cold chain. The doctor pointed out that the idea is to check that everything is fine, “to see if we can start in the middle of next week with the first subject to vaccinate.”

Rodrigo De Antonio, CEO of Cevaxin, pointed out like Sáez-Llorens that “once the sponsor (laboratory) of the study confirms that the vaccine is (in the country) we will begin to apply it in the next few days.” De Antonio explained that nine out of ten volunteers “are going to receive a study vaccine in different doses, and one is going to receive a control that, obviously, neither the research staff nor they will know about, which is what known as ‘the double blind’ “. That is to say, he added, that “neither the participant, nor the research team knows what we are putting into it,” for which, he said, it is important that each person comply with the prevention measures and the guidelines established by the health authorities public.

The first product evaluations of this trial are expected two months after completing the tests, that is, towards the end of October. A study of this type lasts about 13 months, but development cycles are expected to be shortened, always ensuring that vaccination is safe, effective and in the appropriate doses to go to phase 3, the experts explained.

This CureVac vaccine is part of the COVAX initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO), designed to guarantee equitable global access to vaccines for COVID-19, which so far leaves 95,596 confirmed infections and 2,063 deaths in Panama, one of the countries most affected by the pandemic in the Curevac region will receive aid from the German State The biopharmaceutical company CureVac, in which the German State has a stake, said on Friday that the German Ministry of Education and Research has confirmed state aid for development and for the production of its vaccine worth 252 million euros. The grants depend on the achievement of advances in the research and development of the vaccine, and if they are achieved, CureVac will receive up to 103 million euros in 2020 and another 149 million euros in 2021. CureVac wants to produce until the end of this year 100 million doses of its vaccine, which is currently under development, according to its largest shareholder Dietmar Hopp. Hopp foresees that the vaccine will be authorized in spring or summer of next year, although perhaps before, this 2020, with limitations, for some groups of people who are at special risk for their work and for some regions.

With the reactivation of more economic activities starting next Monday, the general director of the Social Security Fund (CSS), Enrique Lau Cortés, affirmed that now the responsibility of avoiding more cases of coronavirus rests with both employers and workers .

Lau Cortés said that, on the one hand, employers are responsible for ensuring compliance with biosecurity measures at their facilities. SHOPS ASK FOR THE REOPENING TO BE ON SEPTEMBER 14

During a tour of some centers, the established protocols were shown.

The National Association of Merchants (Anadeco), which groups 8 thousand businesses and stores, assured that most of the locals have implemented prevention measures as part of the health and safety protocol that they delivered to the Ministry of Health (Minsa) for the opening physical stores.

The union assures that they are ready for the reopening on September 14 and postponing this date could cause the financial collapse of an important segment of the economy that represents 17.9% of the gross domestic product and puts 125 thousand jobs at risk.

During a tour yesterday by some commercial premises, Shani Gerschfeld, a spokeswoman for the union, showed part of the prevention measures that have been adopted so that the physical opening is safe. Among them, she said that enclosures, row dividers and graphic material have been placed on the floor for the entry of customers to each premises. With this, she added, distance controls between customers are delimited, in addition to points for disinfecting hands with sanitizers or alcoholic gel have been placed in each location.

In addition to these measures, Gerschfeld, explained that another of the essential requirements for entering shops is the mandatory use of face masks or masks as a protection measure and in case of not complying, access will be denied, in addition to each person who enters to stores or businesses must undergo the temperature measurement procedure.

The 25% capacity allowed at each location will also be controlled, taking into account capacity.

SCIENTISTS ARE ‘THEIR OWN GUINEA PIGS’ IN THE CREATION OF VACCINES AGAINST COVID-19

The impatience that currently exists in the world to find a possible cure or treatment that prevents the spread of COVID-19, has led several scientists to make their own versions of experimental vaccines and not only that, to be their own “guinea pigs” .

They have even gone further, administering them to family and friends for their internships.

Logic assumes that each of these scientists, in their individual endeavors, have been moved by their skills and the courage to develop a vaccine.

Those who defend their behavior assure that, as long as they are restrained with their statements, and transparent about their processes, everyone could benefit from what they learn.

“I’d rather have the opportunity to have some protection rather than no protection at all,” said Farhad Ghatan, mayor of Friday Harbor, Washington, who asked his friend Johnny Stine to vaccinate him, according to a publication by The New York Times.

Johnny Stine, his friend of 25 years, is “a top-notch pharmaceutical scientist” according to Ghatan.

But like everything else, the idea of these specialists also has its detractors or critics, who say that, although their intentions are very good, it is not likely that these scientists will make a useful discovery, because their vaccines do not undergo the true test of the randomized studies do not have placebo controls.

In the worst case, these experiments could cause different types of harm to people, from severe immune actions and other side effects to making them feel protected, without doing so.

Jeffrey Kahn, director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics points out, “Put it on and nobody is going to be able to do much about it, but if you encourage others to inject a vaccine that has not been tested, we go back to the days of the drugs of patent and quackery”.

Meanwhile, in March of this year, carried away by a reading that made reference to those killed by the pandemic, Preston Estep, a research scientist on the human genome and a resident of the Boston area, promised not to stay comfortably on the sidelines.

He brought together several well-known chemists, biologists, doctors, and professors, who helped him design a formula to make a peptide vaccine that could be sprayed into the nose.

Later, in April, they met in a laboratory where they made the mixture and then sprayed it into their own nostrils. “We are the animals” indicates Estep, taking into consideration that, in the development of a drug, generally, it begins with studies in rodents or other animals.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION DOES NOT EXPECT MASS VACCINATIONS AGAINST COVID UNTIL MID 2021

WHO does not expect mass vaccinations against COVID until mid-2021.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said today that it is most likely that it will take until mid-2021 for mass vaccinations against COVID-19 to be carried out.

“Realistically, we do not expect to see mass vaccinations until the middle of next year,” the organization’s spokeswoman, Margaret Harris, told reporters on Friday, September 4.

He specified that between six and nine vaccine candidates are in advanced stages of research, with a part of them in phase 3 of clinical trials, which require the participation of 30,000 more volunteers and from which information on the efficacy of the product and confirmed to be safe.

The race to develop a vaccine against COVID-19 into which dozens of pharmaceutical companies and biotech firms have launched has generated hope and confusion about the timeframe in which one or more vaccines could actually be available to the public.

Harris acknowledged that this confusion exists and that, in part, it has been fueled by the fact that there are people who are being vaccinated in the framework of clinical trials that are being carried out with various candidate vaccines, but that it is not known if they really work.

“Different research groups are vaccinating people, but right now we don’t have a clear signal that a sufficient level of efficacy and safety has been reached,” Harris explained.

She added that, in view of the resources that are being put into it, it is very likely that there will end up being more than one vaccine available and that those that come onto the market could be used in different population groups.

However, Harris recognized the danger of “feeding false hopes” among the population because this can “increase complacency” towards the virus and cause basic preventive gestures, such as social distance, the use of masks and the washing of hands, to be neglected. hands.

“Let us remember that at the beginning of this pandemic many played down its importance and said that it would pass soon. That attitude has led us to very difficult times,” the spokeswoman commented.

Her words recalled the positions assumed by political leaders, such as the presidents of the United States, Donald Trump; or from Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, who minimized the severity of the coronavirus when it began to circulate in their countries.

Eight months after the new virus was discovered, the US and Brazil are the countries – in this order with the most cases and deaths from COVID-19 worldwide.

Faced with impatience around the search for a vaccine, Harris argued that phase 3 of clinical trials takes the longest, but it must be well conducted to fully understand the level of protection the vaccine offers and its level of safety.

She added that the results of the different vaccine candidates should be compared to see which one is the best and that, for that, the research data should be shared.

China and Russia claim to have discovered vaccines that work against COVID-19 and have indicated that they have begun or are about to use them in their populations, despite the fact that they have not completed phase 3 of clinical trials.

Harris could not confirm whether the WHO has received the scientific data it has requested from Russia on its vaccine.

END NOTES

Although it wasn’t on my To-Do list nor was I forced to do so as part of my queen’s evil plan, I decided to make flan.  This is only the second time that I’ve ever tried to make flan in my entire life.  The first time I tried, it was more like a soufflé or I’d go as far as calling it “sweet scrambled eggs”.  An absolute disaster.  Everyone that I know who makes flan, does it with such ease.  It’s just not fair.

So, I decided to stick to the basics and cheat.  I used our Instant Pot with a special “flanera” that we got as an accessory.  Since I made it Sunday night, I haven’t tried it yet, but it smells amazing and doesn’t look half bad either.

Ingredients from the cheat video I used to make my flan.

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…  And by all means (unless you’re fooling yourself into creating a list of 16 items to do for next weekend buy picking up supplies you won’t use for the next year) STAY HOME!!…
