Monday, September 14, 2020

For the past few months, our family as well as may other families throughout Panama ad very probably throughout the entire world, have been looking for the best ways to occupy their time I ways they ever have before.  Prepandemic, we all took time on the weekends to do whatever it is that we most love to do; it was usually something outside the home.  Since the lockdown, however, most everyone had to stop doing that one thing that they love the most.  That one thing could have been going to the Gym, partaking in outdoor live music performances, visiting family, playing sports, walking the dogs, uniting with friends to play poker or whatever; so much was taken away.

As minimal and insignificant as it may seem, with the minor changes made to the quarantine this last week, I feel like my life is starting to go ack to normal.  On September 7, 2020, the Panamanian government gave me authorization to go fishing again.  That sure sounds odd… “gave me permission”.  It almost sounds like I’m taking them for returning a freedom to me.  I am, sort of, thanking them for coming to their senses.  I never understood how “fishing” could be considered dangerous in the eyes of the government.  Walking my dog by myself, down a lonely street, is also just as dangerous supposedly.  People were arrested and fined for it!  there are still do many things that they need to lighten up on.  Finally, this last weekend, I took advantage of a freedom that was once lost and took my boys fishing.  With travel and the pandemic, it had been 9 months since we had the chance to go out to the lake.

It was bliss.

The number one most important thing about fishing with your children is bonding with them.  There are so many finite factors about the adventure you’re on, but the true purpose is ensuring intense togetherness.  How great is it that their little minds are now removed from the splendor of their phones and other digital connections?  It was just them, me, Mr Chuck, and the great outdoors.  The fishing, itself, was “ok”.  We caught a couple dozen Peacock bass and the weather was awesome, but I can’t express the profoundness of my elation when it comes to how much more we understood each other by doing something as simple as catching fish and enjoying nature.

Could we be any happier!?!

And that was just Saturday.

Sunday morning rolls around and Queen Sayira makes pancakes for us all.  I’m sure you’re thinking, “So what?”.  Well, I’m on a diet and pancakes are totally off limits.  “What’s the occasion?”, I instinctively enquired.  And, with the most amazing look on her face she said, “I just want all this euphoria to continue even if it’s just for one more day.”

And so, I had pancakes.

Is this too much bacon?

My trainer and nutritionist are not happy, but I can live with that.

Finally, football started for me today.  Being such a huge loyal fan of the Packers, the season starts and ends when they do.  Their debut today really put my joy over the edge.  Even the Viking fans who watched would tell you how we maintained total dominance the entire game.  It wasn’t until the end when the Vikings woke up and tried to make an appearance.  Final score was 43 to 34. #GoPackGo

But then the game was over, and I noted that my boys weren’t around.  A quick review of their room and there they were, playing online games again.  Mom had lifted their grounding from the previous weeks as a gift to them for good grades and recent behavior.  However, the lifting of their punishment only meant they were back to their old routine.  There was no more fishing, pancakes or Packers, it was just the next digital fix.

Everyone is fixated on the “new norm” referring to how our world has changed due to the Corona Virus being unleashed unto the world.  What everyone fails to realize is how our lives have already changed so drastically with the onslaught of “AI” taking over our lives during the last 25 years.  We complain about the freedoms that have been taken from us, yet we’re ignorant to the loss we’ve willingly given away and we call it “progress” and “technology” as we clutch our phones and iPads.  We play our games, read our vlogs and sit anxiously for the latest email, staring deeply into our $1,000 dollar apparatus calling it “smart”.  This virus has come, and it will go, yet our ignorance will thrive if we don’t put it in check.  It’s an addiction and the only intervention that will change it is our own will power.  There’s a grand perception about the world that we now live in that is controlled by the very technology we rave about.

Grounding the boys from their phones was amazing.  It was unforgettable.  I guess now I’m either going to have to look for more excuses to ground them just to keep their attention or I need to convince them that there’s more around them to appreciate than that piece of technology I their cluthes.

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS

Yoli’s Summary

During the COVID-19 pandemic, children have been found to be as infected as adults, but generally the disease affects them in a milder way. Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital showed that children “can have a high viral load despite having mild symptoms or being asymptomatic.”

However, viral load measures the concentration of the virus tested in a patient sample. But high viral load is not synonymous with high infective capacity.

“Infectivity is determined by many factors, such as the force and frequency with which one coughs, the proximity of the contacts, the ventilation of the environment. If a person coughs more forcefully, they project the viral particles farther away. That is a very important factor ”. As the disease passes with milder symptoms, children cough less intensely, explains pediatrician Begoña Santiago, from the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid, to the scientific agency Sinc.

Carmen Muñoz-Almagro, specialist in molecular microbiology at the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, in Barcelona, explains that “the highest viral load is observed in the first days of symptoms, in which coughing, speaking or exhaling will favor the transmission of the infection; a sick coughing patient with a low burden, who does not maintain social distance and does not wear a mask, will transmit much more than a patient with a higher burden but who wears a mask, washes his hands and does not cough because he is asymptomatic ”.

The vice president of the Spanish Association of Primary Care Pediatrics, Pedro Gorrotxategui, also believes that “the lower contagion capacity of children could be due to their coughing less forcefully.”

Meanwhile, although a high viral load is generally associated with a greater presence of virus, the viral particles detected may not be infectious.

THERE WAS ALREADY ANTECEDENTS

The virologist of the National Center for Biotechnology Sonia Zúñiga points out: “When we talk about viral load detected by PCR, it means that there is a lot of nucleic acid of the virus [its genetic material], which does not have to be the same as infective virus. To ensure that, the virus would have to be quantified in each case, which cannot be done because P3 [high security] laboratories are needed, and of course there are not so many to do that in each case ”.

In the first report carried out by WHO researchers in Wuhan (China), in February, the impossibility of identifying any contagion from child to adult is already stated; but it was too early to come to a conclusion.

In May, a review by Swedish pediatrician Jonas Ludvigsson, published in Acta Pediátrica, was titled: “Children are unlikely to be the main transmitters of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Epidemiological evidence has continued to attribute a secondary role to children. In August, a report by the European Center for the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (ECDC) revealed that “very few” outbreaks were detected in schools, and little transmission between children.

The Spanish Association of Pediatrics (AEP), in a recent statement, explains that “children seem to be infected in a similar way to adults, they tend to express symptoms in a milder way and are a potential source of transmission to other children and adults, although less efficient, especially those under the age of ten ”.

The AEP also pointed out that there is still much to know, and it must be assumed that “children are contagious and possible sources of reintroduction of transmission to other vulnerable populations.” Hence the need for prevention measures in schools.

Ludvigsson, a pediatrician and clinical epidemiologist at the Karolinska Institute and Columbia University, continues to believe “that the evidence points to children not transmitting the disease as much as adults,” reports Sinc.

CLIMATE CRISIS AND COVID-19: IS OUR DAILY CUP OF COFFEE THREATENED?

Geisha coffee in Panama

The climate and pandemic scenario affects coffee production, its market and attractiveness for tourism, and could pose a serious threat to the customary daily cup of coffee, was highlighted at a forum of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (Segib) held in Panama.

Producers and representatives of regional coffee institutions and programs discussed the matter in the colloquium “Coffee to drink, coffee to take away: production, climate change and creative coffee destinations in Central America”, within the virtual forum of the Segib that was held in Panama .

Participants said that COVID-19 as climate variability poses enormous challenges and challenges to coffee production in the Mesoamerican region (Central America, Panama and Mexico) and the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, and that alternative solutions include the chains value-added and rural tourism, among others.

THE PANDEMIC, THE MOST IMMEDIATE CHALLENGE

René León Gómez Rodas, executive secretary of the Regional Cooperative Program for Technological Development and Modernization of Coffee Production (Promecafé), said that despite the importance of the sector in this area, in the last 10 years it has been subjected to “great challenges “such as pests, diseases, low prices and climate change that aggravate productivity.

Only in the 9 countries that participate in Promecafe, about 30 million bags of this bean are produced, which represent about 25% of the Arabica coffee consumed worldwide, while around 5 million people live and depend directly on this production, according to data from this regional program.

The most immediate challenge facing producers this year has been imposed by COVID-19, “we have analyzed it in the region and we believe that it is affecting us in four major areas: production, the market, the socio-economic environment and the institutional part” Gomez said.

He explained that, in terms of production, the pandemic increases costs, puts income at risk or makes income very volatile, limits the availability of labor, while at the market level it generates general distortions of demand and supply.

Socio-economically, he added, it affects sustainability that was already “seriously compromised” and the opportunity to create jobs; and at the institutional level it limits the capacity to provide technical assistance and to fulfill “that important role that the coffee-growing institutions develop in the regional”.

The executive director of Promecafé said that among some alternatives to overcome the COVID crisis is in the first place “preserving health, developing biosafety protocols and educating producers on prevention measures”

Also promote innovation that leads to reducing costs and improving production efficiency, promoting better income and greater sustainability for producers through diversifying coffee farming with other crops and other sources of income.

In this last aspect of new sources of income, Gómez Rodas considered that “the issue of rural tourism plays a very important role here, coffee tourism with a very important potential to generate new income for coffee producers.”

CLIMATE CRISIS AND ITS THREAT TO THE PLEASURE OF THE DAILY CUP OF COFFEE

“Is our daily cup of coffee threatened” by the effects of the climate crisis ?, was the question raised in the discussion by Francisco Serracín, a producer who carries the family legacy of a long tradition of coffee production dating back to 1873.

Serracín is the owner of the Don Pachi Estate, located in the province of Chiriquí, western Panama, where the worldwide valued variety of Geisha specialty coffee is produced, one of the most expensive in the world.

The producer said that coffee has proven to be very sensitive to the climate crisis and the likely future effects it may generate “and that they are at this time a concern for the coffee sector.”

He cited scientific estimates according to which “by the year 2050, half of the arable land will not be useful to house coffee plantations due to the increase in temperatures and the spread of fungi and diseases”, or that if global warming continues “in the next 70 years crops such as Arabica coffee could disappear “.

Serracín affirmed that the challenge is to “improve knowledge; know how we are going to face this climate change situation; develop appropriate coffee varieties, in which Promecafé is doing an excellent job; adaptation and resilience” to the climatic variability.

MORE THAN 20 MEMBERS OF A FAMILY WITH COVID-19 IN PARQUE LEFEVRE

The overcrowding problem is compounding the fight against the COVID19 crisis. The health authorities of Parque Lefevre found more than 20 people with coronavirus in a residence.

Neighbors colloquially call that area of Panama Viejo “the mousetrap” because of the number of small rooms and subdivided houses, in which dozens of people live.

Right in one where 52 people live, there were 22 cases of COVID-19, especially in children. A man who lives there, refused to be tested. He used to constantly wander down the street.

He fled, so the director of the Parque Lefevre traceability center, Francisco Reyes, asked the National Police to arrest him to verify his state of health.

An hour later, it was confirmed that he did not have the virus, but according to the authorities, living in a residence with so many infected people makes him a danger to the rest of the neighbors.

You can carry virus particles on clothing. But the reality is that in a highly overcrowded neighborhood like this one, quarantine can be a problem. It is what doctors call the social determinants of health: living without water, with too many people, without provisions, in poverty, makes them more vulnerable to diseases like COVID19.

The authorities took boxes with food and diapers, and established a sanitary fence in the house. Neither the infected nor the healthy will be able to leave until it is confirmed that the crisis in that place has passed.

TOCUMEN AIRPORT, READY FOR THE RETURN OF INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS

There is a month to go before international flights are reactivated, according to the calendar programmed by the government. At the Tocumen International Airport they say they are ready, as are their passengers. For now, there are about 1,000 daily passengers that move through the Tocumen International Airport. Before the pandemic, there were about 45,000 a day.

Currently it operates in the modality of controlled flights, to 12 destinations, between passengers in transit and residents, who say they feel safe and are not so afraid of traveling. Carlos Suárez, a Costa Rican living in Panama, says not at all.

“In fact, my family is currently thinking of visiting their relatives in the United States and we do not see any problem in that,” she explained. For her part, Katy Drennan, a Panamanian traveler, said at the Tocumen airport that she felt safe. “I feel that I have taken precautions and also, from what I entered the airport, I feel that the handling of everything has been very good, we have always kept our distance.

The truth is, I have felt safe for the moment and I feel that everything is going to be fine, obviously one taking precautions. But the volume of passengers is expected to change because according to the government’s reactivation plan, on October 12 the restriction on international flights is lifted, which poses a challenge for the air terminal, and of course, for the airlines.

That is why technology is taken advantage of, such as the location of thermal cameras installed in front of the main door, which is currently used as the only entrance to the air terminal.

On a monitor you can see the temperature of each person who passes and if one of them has it elevated, the system issues the alert. However, as explained, it is unlikely that someone is inside the airport with a fever, because there are also filters on the outside, for taking temperature.

There is no lack of alcoholic gel, the use of a mask is the norm, and physical distance. The manager of Tocumen S.A, ensures that they are ready. “This has taken us from less to more.

We started humanitarian flights, then we have been able to test and put into practice all the measures through the Controlled Flight Center, and this puts us on alert and with very good practice of the measures for now, on October 12, we can start regular flights . We have made adjustments, of course, throughout this period, many coordination meetings, ”explained manager Raffoul Arab.

While the passengers little by little regain the confidence to go through an air terminal and get on a plane, between Tocumen SA, the Civil Aeronautics Directorate and the Ministry of Health, the coordination is made so that Panama returns to its role as Hub of the Americas with great security.

CHINA AUTHORIZES TESTING OF FIRST NASAL SPRAY CORONAVIRUS VACCINE

Experts cited by the state press assure that completing the three phases of the tests would take at least a year although, if effective, the vaccine could offer a “double immunity” against the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 and the flu.

China authorized the start of clinical trials in humans of a possible vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that would be the only one of all the candidates worldwide to be administered by nasal spray instead of injection, the news portal Sina reports today.

After receiving the green light from the National Medical Products Administration, this potential vaccine will begin the first phase of clinical trials in November with a hundred volunteers in the coastal city of Dongtai, in eastern Jiangsu province.

The project has been jointly developed by the universities of Xiamen (Southeast) and Hong Kong and the Beijing biotechnology company Wantai.

Experts cited by the state press assure that completing the three phases of the tests would take at least a year, although, if effective, the vaccine could offer “double immunity” against the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 and the flu.

The reason for this is that fragments of the spike (protein that forms the “crown” that gives the infectious agent its name) of SARS-CoV-2 have been used in attenuated viruses of the common seasonal influenza.

The project developers hope that, by administering the vaccine by nasal spray, the habitual route of infection of respiratory viruses will be reproduced and thus induce an immune response, although it is still unknown whether the protection generated would last longer or shorter than if it were injected.

For now, only mild side effects such as runny nose (nasal congestion) are to be expected, although it may cause asthma or shortness of breath. ‘

So far, the Chinese authorities have given the green light to clinical tests of a dozen possible vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, of which four are already in the third phase.

If successful, this method would facilitate vaccination campaigns and would also be easier to produce, points out the official Global Times newspaper.

Brazil was one of the countries chosen by the Australian research center Murdoch Children’s Research Institute as the basis of a project that seeks to establish whether the tuberculosis vaccine is also effective against the coronavirus, scientific sources reported Thursday.

The investigation in phase three (the most advanced) of the efficacy of the BCG vaccine (acronym for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) to prevent COVID-19 will be carried out with thousands of volunteers in Australia, Spain, the United Kingdom and Brazil, this country last where it will be applied to 3,000 people.

“We will investigate whether BCG offers protection against COVID-19, on the one hand, and if it can decrease the virulence of the pathogen, on the other,” explained pulmonologist Margareth Dalholm, a researcher at the state-run Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), in statements to journalists.

PANAMA TESTS TWO VENTILATOR PROTOTYPES IN PIGS FOR COVID-19 SICKNESSES

Two prototypes of ventilators for severe COVID-19 patients developed in Panama are in the animal testing phase, those responsible for the project that seeks to produce 100% Panamanian equipment of this type said on Thursday. Pre-clinical trials in animals (phases 2 and 3) are performed in “healthy and injured” pigs to simulate the respiratory difficulties of a patient with COVID-19, which has the approval of the Bioethics Committee of Animal Use of the University of Panama and together with veterinarians from this institution. The prototypes must be able to ventilate an injured animal for 60 minutes, maintaining the appropriate physiological levels of blood gases, metabolites and blood pressure, explained Dr. Rolando Gittens, researcher and one of the coordinators in a virtual conference. “The objective is to develop equipment 100% in Panama,” he said, stating that in total “between five to seven prototypes have been designed that have been advanced,” two of which “have already reached animal tests and one has already is in the last phase of those animal tests that can simulate the breathing difficulties of a patient with COVID-19. ” The cost of manufacturing these equipment, not yet certified in its entirety, is between 6,000 and 7,500 dollars, said Pablo Moreira, commercial director of PSL PSA, a company that supports the project. The initiative, called “Fans for Panama”, is developed since March by engineers, intensivist physicians and researchers from the Institute of Scientific Research and High Technology Services of Panama (INDICASAT) and the Technological University of Panama, and has the support of the Ministry of the Presidency and the National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (SENACYT) .The idea arises from the high global demand for these equipment as a result of the new coronavirus pandemic, to care for patients with respiratory failure in Intensive Care Units, which led to their shortage and the cost multiplication, according to official explanations. Engineers have divided into teams to develop prototypes of venti Emergency mechanical lators, and in a first phase, these go through functional tests with medical simulation mannequins that are carried out at the Regional Center for Training and Simulation in Health (CREASS AIP), in the City of Knowledge, located on the outskirts from Panama City. These tests were only passed by two of the prototypes advanced by different teams of engineers between April and July, which are the ones that are now tested with animals.

XAVIER SÁEZ-LLORENS: ‘I AM VERY PLEASED WITH THE IMPORTANT DROP IN NEW CASES OF COVID-19’

Xavier Sáez-Llorens asked the population to be cautious about the new openings.

The infectologist Xavier Sáez-Llorens, a member of the former advisory committee against the coronavirus, expressed his happiness, after in recent weeks the new reports of COVID-19 have decreased.

Llorens recalled that the main purpose of health measures is precisely to reduce the number of cases of this disease.

“I am very happy about the significant drop in new cases of COVID, which also reduces proportionally the number of deaths, a priority objective of the mitigation measures,” said the doctor through his Twitter account.

In this sense, Llorens stressed that Panama has always had one of the lowest fatality rates in the region, a merit that he attributed to the work of his colleagues.

He also called for the population not to lower its guard before the next opening of more economic sectors.

“It is proof of the remarkable effort of health personnel in public and private hospitals. Today, more than ever, the responsibility lies with everyone to comply with the sanitary recommendations so that the opening of commercial activities does not bring an unmanageable setback in the epidemiological figures “, I consider.

VOLUNTEERS AND VACCINES

Llorens, a defender of the importance of vaccines to eradicate diseases, clarified that most of the volunteers who participate in the trials do so for reasons of altruism or because they benefit from quality medical care.

“Most do it to support the advancement of medical science. Others do it because they want to obtain direct benefit: efficacy of the product under study, contact with trained professionals 24/7, personalized attention to other ailments not related to the project, timely identification of risk health conditions “, commented the doctor.

He also stressed that the ethics committees prohibit payments to volunteers for participating, because there should not be any type of coercion and that the adversities related to the study are covered by insurance policies.

72.4% OF COVID-19 PATIENTS HAVE RECOVERED IN PANAMA, DURING THE SIX MONTHS OF PANDEMIC

One of the tools that has been identified as “basic” to prevent COVID-19 from continuing to spread has been traceability.

72.4% of the people who have been affected by COVID-19 in Panama have managed to recover, this after six months of detecting the first case of the new coronavirus in the country.

According to official figures issued by the Ministry of Health (Minsa), of 99,715 people who have suffered from the disease, 72,203 have already recovered and some 25,385 remain active.

Of the patients who remain active, 24,108 are in home isolation or mild condition.

One of the tools that has been identified as “basic” to prevent COVID-19 from continuing to spread has been traceability.

Since it is based on identifying cases and following up on contacts in order to cut the chain of transmission.

It should be noted that, during this same period of the pandemic, 384,525 tests have been applied, of which the majority, 73.1% (281,260) have been negative.

PHARMACEUTICAL ASTRAZENECA RESUMES VACCINE TRIALS AGAINST COVID-19

The company’s vaccine is one of nine currently being tested.

The pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca announced on Saturday the resumption of clinical trials to achieve a vaccine against Covid-19, which it had interrupted due to the illness of a volunteer, after obtaining authorization from the British authorities.

“Clinical trials for the AstraZeneca Oxford coronavirus vaccine AZD1222 have been resumed in the UK after receiving confirmation from the Health Regulatory Authority,” the company reported.

AstraZeneca announced Wednesday that it had “voluntarily” discontinued testing of the vaccine it is developing with Oxford University after detecting that one of the volunteers had developed an “unexplained” disease.

An independent committee reviewed the safety measures of the trials, a step that both the multinational and the World Health Organization (WHO) described as routine in these cases.

The committee “has completed its investigations and confirmed to the Authority that the assays are safe,” added AstraZeneca.

This company’s vaccine is one of the nine that is currently being tested in the world on a massive scale with human beings, which is known as Phase 3.

In the United States, AstraZeneca began recruiting 30,000 volunteers on August 31, and inoculation has already begun with small groups in Brazil and other Latin American countries.

The AZD1222 vaccine uses a more benign version of the adenovirus that causes the common cold, but genetically modified to fight the protein that Covid-19 uses to invade human cells.

When vaccinated, the patient begins to produce this protein, which allows the immune system to attack the coronavirus if it enters the body.

The statement assured that AstraZeneca maintains the highest safety standards, and that it will resume clinical trials in other countries when the respective authorities authorize it, with the aim of “providing a vaccine in a broad, skiable way and without seeking benefits during this pandemic.” .

THEY TRY TO CREATE MOLECULES THAT PREVENT THE DEVELOPMENT OF COVID-19

“If all the steps of the project are carried out satisfactorily, finally the biological tests of the new molecules will be carried out in laboratories at the University of Mainz or the University of Oxford”.

A team of biochemical researchers from the Jaume I University of Castelló (UJI) has been immersed in an ambitious project since April: to create simple non-cytotoxic antiviral molecules that inhibit the development of the disease generated by covid-19 and prevent the reproduction of the virus.

“This small molecule would be a drug to treat covid-19 patients,” Vicent Moliner, professor of Physical Chemistry and principal investigator of the Computational Biochemistry Group at the UJI, who develops the Match COVID-19 project, told EFE. march with the start of the health emergency due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Various universities such as the Polytechnic of Valéncia (UPV), Miguel Hernández de Elche (UMH) and Alicante (UA) participate in this project, as well as the Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research of the Valencian Community (FISABIO ), the La Fe Health Research Institute (IIS La Fe), the INCLIVA Health Research Institute and the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC).

Specifically, the work carried out at the UJI consists of studying at the atomic level how one of the enzymes that participate in the reproduction process of the coronavirus works, called SARS-CoV-2 Mpro, a cysteine protease that participates in the replication of the virus when it enters humans.

“After having recently studied and published how this enzyme works, we are now trying to design an inhibitor to block it and, in this way, prevent the reproduction of the virus. This small molecule would be a drug to treat COVID-19 patients”, assures EFE.

In addition, this research group at the UJI, in which three more researchers participate, have experience in the study of other enzymes of the type cysteine proteases similar to this one.

Throughout three months of work through a specific web platform, 47 expressions of interest have been disseminated for the search for partners, sent by researchers from the participating institutions and which have generated 79 contacts.

“The advantage we have having studied other proteases long before COVID-19 appeared is that we can do comparative studies in order to design a drug that inhibits and blocks this one in particular, without affecting other proteases that we have in the body human, “explains Moliner.

“From the first day of confinement, on March 15, we are connected from our homes to the computer centers where we are carrying out simulations, such as the UJI calculation center or the facilities of the Spanish Supercomputing Network, to treat to study at the atomic level how this enzyme works, “he continues.

It is a team effort, in which Katarzyna Świderek, Kemel Arafet and Natalia Serrano participate, but, in addition, other groups collaborate in this project, such as those led by F.V. González (Universitat Jaume I), A. Lodola (University of Parma), A. Mulholland, (University of Bristol), J.M. Sansano (University of Alacant) and M. Szaleniec (Polish Academy of Sciences).

“If all the steps of the project are carried out satisfactorily, finally the biological tests of the new molecules will be carried out in laboratories at the University of Mainz or the University of Oxford,” says Moliner.

The purpose of Match COVID19 is to connect research teams and laboratory capacities and launch R&D projects that can solve problems associated with the epidemic, adding scientific and technological efforts and capacities that, although geographically close, are not easily identifiable. without adequate coordination action.

For Moliner, it is a “necessary” initiative to be able to reach a solution to the health emergency; in addition, he claims “the need to invest in young researchers, who are not the future, but the present.”

If this does not evolve and the research staff are not progressively renewed, he warns, “we may find ourselves with a serious problem in our country.”

ANTICOAGULANT TRIALS STARTED TO HELP PATIENTS WITH COVID-19

Doctors noticed clotting early in the pandemic and have been using blood thinners in various ways to help patients.

American researchers have started two clinical trials examining the use of blood thinners to help Covid-19 patients avoid clots that lead to strokes, heart attacks and organ failure.

In one study, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will examine hospitalized patients, said Francis Collins, director of the NIH, in a call with reporters Thursday. The second study will focus on people who have not been hospitalized. The trials are part of President Donald Trump’s Operation Warp Speed to accelerate the development of COVID-19 treatments and vaccines.

Clotting incidents are “surprisingly more frequent” in Covid-19 patients in intensive care, and the problem is evident in between 20% and 30% of them, said Gary Gibbons, director of the Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. of the NIH, who will conduct the trials. Other intensive care patients suffer clotting 5% to 10% of the time, he said.

Gibbons said he expects to have essay responses in “months, not years.”

Doctors noticed clotting early in the pandemic and have been using blood thinners in various ways to help patients, Collins said. The trials will help clinicians “get a clear idea of what is the most beneficial way,” he said.

The link between Covid-19 and clotting appears to be in the endothelial cells that line the body’s blood vessels. These cells contain a protein that the new coronavirus attaches to when it infects the body, including the lungs, heart and other organs, Gibbons explained in June.

Hospitalized patients will receive low or high doses of the blood thinner heparin, while those receiving treatment outside the hospital will receive aspirin, a blood thinner called apixaban, or a placebo. The researchers will also look for common genetic traits among those who are not hospitalized and who later develop complications.

Researchers previously evaluated the records of more than 2,700 Covid-19 patients hospitalized at Mount Sinai Health System and found signs that blood thinners could help improve survival, according to a June article published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

END NOTES

In high school, I had one of the greatest History teachers, Mr Belanger.  He was just one of the nicest guys you would ever meet.  He had this quality about him where he was just nice just for the sake of it.  Little did I know that one day I would meet yet another Mr Belanger who was just as special, just as nice.  I met him originally through AMCHAM, but he has since become a friend and someone I personally admire for his perseverance and resolve.  His knowledge and contact base is impressive; somehow, someway, he’s simply knows seemingly everyone.  But most importantly, you can trust him.

Look at that smile, radiating with niceness

Stay safe…  Stay healthy…  And by all means (unless you’re attempting to have the same amazing weekend that I had) STAY HOME!!…
