For the past few months, our family as well as may other families throughout Panama ad very probably throughout the entire world, have been looking for the best ways to occupy their time I ways they ever have before. Prepandemic, we all took time on the weekends to do whatever it is that we most love to do; it was usually something outside the home. Since the lockdown, however, most everyone had to stop doing that one thing that they love the most. That one thing could have been going to the Gym, partaking in outdoor live music performances, visiting family, playing sports, walking the dogs, uniting with friends to play poker or whatever; so much was taken away.
As minimal and insignificant as it may seem, with the minor changes made to the quarantine this last week, I feel like my life is starting to go ack to normal. On September 7, 2020, the Panamanian government gave me authorization to go fishing again. That sure sounds odd… “gave me permission”. It almost sounds like I’m taking them for returning a freedom to me. I am, sort of, thanking them for coming to their senses. I never understood how “fishing” could be considered dangerous in the eyes of the government. Walking my dog by myself, down a lonely street, is also just as dangerous supposedly. People were arrested and fined for it! there are still do many things that they need to lighten up on. Finally, this last weekend, I took advantage of a freedom that was once lost and took my boys fishing. With travel and the pandemic, it had been 9 months since we had the chance to go out to the lake.
It was bliss.
The number one most important thing about fishing with your children is bonding with them. There are so many finite factors about the adventure you’re on, but the true purpose is ensuring intense togetherness. How great is it that their little minds are now removed from the splendor of their phones and other digital connections? It was just them, me, Mr Chuck, and the great outdoors. The fishing, itself, was “ok”. We caught a couple dozen Peacock bass and the weather was awesome, but I can’t express the profoundness of my elation when it comes to how much more we understood each other by doing something as simple as catching fish and enjoying nature.
And that was just Saturday.
Sunday morning rolls around and Queen Sayira makes pancakes for us all. I’m sure you’re thinking, “So what?”. Well, I’m on a diet and pancakes are totally off limits. “What’s the occasion?”, I instinctively enquired. And, with the most amazing look on her face she said, “I just want all this euphoria to continue even if it’s just for one more day.”
And so, I had pancakes.
My trainer and nutritionist are not happy, but I can live with that.
Finally, football started for me today. Being such a huge loyal fan of the Packers, the season starts and ends when they do. Their debut today really put my joy over the edge. Even the Viking fans who watched would tell you how we maintained total dominance the entire game. It wasn’t until the end when the Vikings woke up and tried to make an appearance. Final score was 43 to 34. #GoPackGo
But then the game was over, and I noted that my boys weren’t around. A quick review of their room and there they were, playing online games again. Mom had lifted their grounding from the previous weeks as a gift to them for good grades and recent behavior. However, the lifting of their punishment only meant they were back to their old routine. There was no more fishing, pancakes or Packers, it was just the next digital fix.
Everyone is fixated on the “new norm” referring to how our world has changed due to the Corona Virus being unleashed unto the world. What everyone fails to realize is how our lives have already changed so drastically with the onslaught of “AI” taking over our lives during the last 25 years. We complain about the freedoms that have been taken from us, yet we’re ignorant to the loss we’ve willingly given away and we call it “progress” and “technology” as we clutch our phones and iPads. We play our games, read our vlogs and sit anxiously for the latest email, staring deeply into our $1,000 dollar apparatus calling it “smart”. This virus has come, and it will go, yet our ignorance will thrive if we don’t put it in check. It’s an addiction and the only intervention that will change it is our own will power. There’s a grand perception about the world that we now live in that is controlled by the very technology we rave about.
Grounding the boys from their phones was amazing. It was unforgettable. I guess now I’m either going to have to look for more excuses to ground them just to keep their attention or I need to convince them that there’s more around them to appreciate than that piece of technology I their cluthes.

CLIMATE CRISIS AND COVID-19: IS OUR DAILY CUP OF COFFEE THREATENED?

The executive director of Promecafé said that among some alternatives to overcome the COVID crisis is in the first place “preserving health, developing biosafety protocols and educating producers on prevention measures”
Also promote innovation that leads to reducing costs and improving production efficiency, promoting better income and greater sustainability for producers through diversifying coffee farming with other crops and other sources of income.
In this last aspect of new sources of income, Gómez Rodas considered that “the issue of rural tourism plays a very important role here, coffee tourism with a very important potential to generate new income for coffee producers.”
CLIMATE CRISIS AND ITS THREAT TO THE PLEASURE OF THE DAILY CUP OF COFFEE
“Is our daily cup of coffee threatened” by the effects of the climate crisis ?, was the question raised in the discussion by Francisco Serracín, a producer who carries the family legacy of a long tradition of coffee production dating back to 1873.

The new decree establishes that “as of Monday, September 14, 2020, the Curfew throughout the national territory will run from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. from Monday to Saturday.” Total quarantine Sunday for the provinces of Panama and Panama Oeste.
However, this regulation indicates that, for the provinces of Bocas del Toro, Colón and Chiriquí, the Curfew is maintained from Monday to Thursday from 7:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m .; and on Fridays the total quarantine is implemented from 7:00 p.m. until Monday at 5:00 a.m.
In addition, it is established that, as of Monday, September 14, throughout the national territory, the restriction of citizen mobility, which used sex as a basis, is without effect.
In the same way, the use of safe-conducts issued to circulate is eliminated, with the exception of those that were validated by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MICI) in favor of the workers of companies that, due to their economic activity, require to work in a Queda de Queda.
The exceptions established in Article 2 of Executive Decree No. 507of March 24, 2020 remain in force, during curfew hours and total quarantine, however for Panama and West Panama they will be subject to the terms provided in Article 1 of this Executive Decree. The activities described in article 2 of Executive Decree No. 869of July 17, 2020.
Finally, the new Decree indicates that epidemic areas, health fences and checkpoints established by the Executive Branch and the health authority will remain in force.
The regulations warn that these eliminated restrictions may be established again by the Ministry of Health through a new resolution, according to the incidence of COVID-19 disease infections.

COPA AIRLINES ANNOUNCES THAT IT WILL RESTART DOMESTIC FLIGHTS TO CHIRIQUÍ STARTIG SEPTEMBER 28
The Panamanian airline Copa Airlines announced on its social networks that it will resume domestic flights on the Panama-David route from September 28.

72.4% OF COVID-19 PATIENTS HAVE RECOVERED IN PANAMA, DURING THE SIX MONTHS OF PANDEMIC

PHARMACEUTICAL ASTRAZENECA RESUMES VACCINE TRIALS AGAINST COVID-19

THEY TRY TO CREATE MOLECULES THAT PREVENT THE DEVELOPMENT OF COVID-19

Specifically, the work carried out at the UJI consists of studying at the atomic level how one of the enzymes that participate in the reproduction process of the coronavirus works, called SARS-CoV-2 Mpro, a cysteine protease that participates in the replication of the virus when it enters humans.

In addition, this research group at the UJI, in which three more researchers participate, have experience in the study of other enzymes of the type cysteine proteases similar to this one.
Throughout three months of work through a specific web platform, 47 expressions of interest have been disseminated for the search for partners, sent by researchers from the participating institutions and which have generated 79 contacts.
“The advantage we have having studied other proteases long before COVID-19 appeared is that we can do comparative studies in order to design a drug that inhibits and blocks this one in particular, without affecting other proteases that we have in the body human, “explains Moliner.

“If all the steps of the project are carried out satisfactorily, finally the biological tests of the new molecules will be carried out in laboratories at the University of Mainz or the University of Oxford,” says Moliner.
The purpose of Match COVID19 is to connect research teams and laboratory capacities and launch R&D projects that can solve problems associated with the epidemic, adding scientific and technological efforts and capacities that, although geographically close, are not easily identifiable. without adequate coordination action.

ANTICOAGULANT TRIALS STARTED TO HELP PATIENTS WITH COVID-19
American researchers have started two clinical trials examining the use of blood thinners to help Covid-19 patients avoid clots that lead to strokes, heart attacks and organ failure.
In one study, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will examine hospitalized patients, said Francis Collins, director of the NIH, in a call with reporters Thursday. In high school, I had one of the greatest History teachers, Mr Belanger. He was just one of the nicest guys you would ever meet. He had this quality about him where he was just nice just for the sake of it. Little did I know that one day I would meet yet another Mr Belanger who was just as special, just as nice. I met him originally through AMCHAM, but he has since become a friend and someone I personally admire for his perseverance and resolve. His knowledge and contact base is impressive; somehow, someway, he’s simply knows seemingly everyone. But most importantly, you can trust him.
