When the Going Gets Tough…; Anti Covid 19 Vaccines Finally Arrive in Panama; Convalescent Plasma Therapy; Study on Confinement by Gorgas; And His Name is Ragnar

Friday, January 22, 2021

Well, if ever there was a time when leaders were meant to shine, that was supposed to be 2020.  As we look across the planet, very few leaders were truly to be found.  In truth, the majority of them were found in the places you wouldn’t normally look for them.  When you hear the word “leader”, most think “President”, “CEO”, “General” or other high ranking military official.  What’s amazing about times of desperation, is how we begin to see how our idolized leaders start to crumble and the true leaders come out of nowhere when they’ve been given the opportunity to rise to the occasion.  Sometimes that opportunity is reluctantly handed to them.  Sometimes, they rise up due to the lack of leadership within their own organization.  Maybe it came out during a time of need, a moment of resolve or by natural determination driven by the fire of their own spirit.

But why?  Why were the known leaders, our presumed heroes, the first to crumble?  Where did these unknowns come from who have since taken the reins of destiny, guiding us to a better future?  There’s an old saying, “when the going gets tough, the ‘tough’ get going”.  As a kid, I used to think that it meant the tough ones would run away, but in time, I’ve realized that it means the tough, whoever they may be, are the ones who take over and make things happen.  That’s not necessarily the person in charge, as the other side to this saying is, “when the going gets tough, the fakers take cover… …or they continue to fake it”.

One major rule of a leader is making decisions NOW!  There’s no room for procrastination especially when millions of lives are on the line.  I try not to bring up the Army all the time, as if that was my only training center for leadership, however, they still make the best stories due to their intensity.

Here, they taught us to make quick decisions, regardless as to whether they were the right decisions.  With experience, we would learn which decision was the right one and which one killed the people around us.  Training to be a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) was done first through the Primary Leadership Development Course or “PLDC”.

Trudging through the depths of Fort Espinar’s jungles in Colon, our drill sergeant would suddenly bark out a scenario, “IN COMING!!!  We’re under attack from the North.  What do you do, Specialist???”, and you had exactly 1 second after that 3rd question mark to make a decision.  Honestly, when I didn’t know the “right” answer, my go to response was “Everyone drop and do 20 pushups.”, because for as ridiculous as it sounded, at least I was making an immediate decision and that’s what they wanted from us.  Besides, at only 20 years old, what the hell did I know?

With time, and more importantly, experience, you continue to make quick decisions, but you make more and more accurate decisions.  This gives us the potential for efficient leaders.

So, what’s the point to my fodder-riddled garble?  Well, I figured out what’s been driving me crazy in Panama.  It isn’t the types of restrictions we’re having to live with.  It isn’t the constant, lock down, no lock down, sanitary roadblocks, no sanitary roadblocks, the curfew is at 7PM, no wait, 9PM, oops, just kidding, it’s at 830PM…. Nope, my gripe is the lack of astute expeditious thinking and faultless decision-making.  Sure, everyone is new to this pandemic, but quite frankly, we’ve all had a year to figure this out and it seems like everyone keeps making the same mistakes.  Instead of highly experienced leaders securing a large number of vaccines and supplies, we have pseudo-leaders who are still fumbling through the jungle telling us to drop and do 20 pushups because they don’t what the hell to do.  Novices!!  (Quick break as I rip the stubble from the very top of my noggin with both hands clenched tight in frustration…).

Don’t get me wrong, I love Panama with all of my heart.  It’s my home.  But the leaders here need to stop looking at their next score and start doing something for the good of the people, quickly… efficiently… NOW!

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS:

Yoli’s Wisdom:

Little girl on a bike bullies her father as he tries to lose the 20 lbs he gained last year.

The coronavirus arrived a year ago and is already part of our ‘normality’. Experts from all over the world have warned that the virus is not going to go away and is quite possibly present forever, as the flu or others already do. But not everything is so negative; they also mark is that the day will come when their mortality and its effects will be much less devastating than they are today.

For now, we have to wait. The date to live with a light coronavirus is still far away. “It could take from a few years to a few decades, depending on how fast the pathogen spreads,” explains an article published in the prestigious journal Science.

The main author of the study specifies it more and sets the deadline for this transformation to occur at “between one and ten years”, as Jennie Lavine, from Emory University (USA), has explained in El País.

Then, SARS-CoV-2 will stop being a pandemic virus to be an endemic disease with much milder consequences. Once it is established as one more conventional disease, the forecast is that it will affect younger people and in a milder way.

It is not an exact calculation, it should be specified. The term will depend not only on the rate of spread, but on the speed with which it is vaccinated, knowing how many doses are needed for immunity to be strong and how long a person remains immune after having been vaccinated or infected. “Ideally, the ability to block the disease is long-lasting, but the transmission capacity is shorter,” Lavine details.

This step that could be fundamental to reduce the impact of the pandemic would not be so surprising looking at history. So far, of the six coronaviruses that have affected human organisms, four have limited their effects to very mild incidences, while another two, SARS-CoV-1 and MERS, could be eradicated.

CSS: THE AUDIT FINDED THAT “EACH VACCINATE HAD THE MERIT AND THE RIGHT ACCORDING TO THE PROTOCOL”

Health personnel applying the COVID19 vaccine to a co-worker.

Given the complaints about irregularities in the vaccination process against covid-19, authorities of the Social Security Fund ordered a detailed audit to be carried out, and as indicated they have verified that “each of the people who have been vaccinated had the merit and the right to to a vaccine according to the established protocol ”.

Previously, the entity pointed out that officials who are vaccinated against COVID-19 without being part of the priority group defined for Phase 1 vaccination, will be immediately dismissed.

Shortly after the arrival of the first vials, the application of vaccines began, and immediately intensivist doctors denounced that health personnel and administrative personnel who have not directly treated infected patients, applied the anticovid vaccine, not complying with the vaccination plan established by the Ministry of Health.

Before Panama received the first doses, the Government drew up a plan that established that the first doses would be applied to personnel who maintain direct contact with COVID-19 positive patients, and later the rest of the health personnel would be vaccinated.

On Wednesday, January 20, Panama received the first doses of the covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech. It was expected to be 40 thousand doses initially, however, only 12,840 arrived due to Pfizer temporarily reducing its production.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION RECOMMENDS NOT TO REQUIRE AN THE COVID VACCINE FOR ENTRY INTO THE COUNTRY

Dude, we only received 12,840 dosis of that. You might want to hold that with more than just two fingers.

The Emergency Committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) for COVID-19 today recommended to governments that, for the time being, do not require travelers entering their countries to provide proof that they are vaccinated against this disease.

“Given that the impact of vaccines in reducing infections is still unknown, and that their availability is still very limited, the committee recommends that countries do not require a vaccination certificate for travelers who enter,” said the committee in a statement.

If such proof is requested, “this should not exempt international travelers from complying with other risk reduction measures,” he added.

The WHO Emergency Committee for this pandemic meets every three months to analyze the health crisis, although this appointment – the sixth since the pandemic was declared – was brought forward two weeks due to the emergence of several variants of the coronavirus that are especially contagious and that they already circulate in many countries.

On mutations, the committee recommended increasing the sequencing of coronavirus genomes around the world, in order to continue to identify new variants, and called for scientific collaboration in this regard.

He also asked the WHO to develop a standardized system to name new strains of the coronavirus, avoiding geographical allusions about their origin, such as those that identify the new variants as “British” or “South African”, although in the meantime others have already been identified in Japan and it is being investigated if one more has appeared in Brazil.

Regarding vaccines, the committee noted that the delay in sending data to WHO by some manufacturers makes it difficult to analyze new candidates and their possible approval for emergency use, which is why it urged pharmaceutical companies to contribute their results “as soon as possible”.

Governments were also recommended to provide the public with accurate information about the safety and benefits of vaccines, in order to address any doubts that may arise about them.

The committee’s experts, meeting Thursday for four hours by videoconference, also confirmed, as expected, that the pandemic remains an international emergency, a status that the WHO declared on January 30, 2020, even before the disease was baptized as COVID-19.

The WHO noted at Thursday’s meeting that the risk of transmission remains “very high, due in part to recent reports of new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus,” which causes COVID-19.

CONVOLESCENT PLASMA THERAPY WOULD HAVE NO BENEFITS: UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD

Plasma donated by a Covid-19 survivor.

A large national study in the United Kingdom evaluating convalescent plasma as a therapy against Covid-19 had to be finalized after concluding that the treatment promoted by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, does not work.

The research from the University of Oxford was part of a clinical trial called Recovery that investigates different treatments against Covid-19. The only branch of the study that has been suspended is one investigating the efficacy of a therapy that uses plasma from people who have recovered from the virus. A monitoring panel concluded that it was pointless to continue, the university said in a statement.

The decision was made after more than 100,000 Americans were treated with convalescent plasma after its use for emergency cases was authorized by US regulators. Trump commented in August that it would “save countless lives.”

“Convalescent plasma has been widely used as a treatment against Covid-19, but to date there has been no convincing evidence of the effect of convalescent plasma on clinical outcomes of hospitalized patients with Covid-19,” according to the statement.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States is leading an investigation of convalescent plasma in that country, but expectations are low, at best.

Trump and Stephen Hahn, Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA, for its acronym in English) held a press conference in August 2020 announcing that the FDA would authorize the use of convalescent plasma in an emergency against Covid- 19, although the evidence of its efficacy was scarce. Trump widely touted the therapy, while Hahn exaggerated its benefit in comments he was forced to withdraw shortly after.

Peter Horby, one of Recovery’s principal investigators, said that some subgroups of patients may still benefit from convalescent plasma.

“While the overall result is negative, we must await full results before we can understand whether convalescent plasma plays any role in specific patient subgroups,” Horby, professor of emerging infectious diseases at the Nuffield Department of Medicine, said in the statement. at the University of Oxford.

ENABLE THE PROCESS FOR THE RENEWAL OF IMMIGRATION REGULARIZATION

Central office of the National Migration Service on Avenida Ricardo J. Alfaro.

Since this January 18, the appointment system for the process of Renewal of Immigration Regularization, of the National Immigration Service, has been enabled. To do this, the user must access the website: www.migracion.gob.pa. Through which they can manage their appointment to start the renewal process. This procedure must be presented through a lawyer, according to the entity. He stressed that, in compliance with the ruling issued by the Third Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, of September 3, 2020, it was established that all immigration renewal procedures must be carried out through a lawyer. It indicates that the Regularization Renewal Process corresponds to those who already have a process in progress and go to the next stage. In addition, they warn that the quotas will be limited to be able to comply with the biosecurity measures established by the Ministry of Health in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to avoid crowds within the facilities.

SEQUENCING, A WAY TO STOP VARIANTS OF SARS-COV-2

A deCODE Genetics scientist works in the laboratory in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Since the beginning of the epidemic, Iceland has genetically identified all positive cases of Covid-19 in its territory. It’s a unique model that seems even more useful now that variants of the virus have emerged and the World Health Organization (WHO) urges an urgent step up sequencing.

It all happens on the first floor of an imposing gray building, headquarters of the company deCODE Genetics in Reykjavik. Scientists from this Icelandic biopharmaceutical group have been working for the health authorities for six months.

Their mission is to analyze every positive sample from people being tested in Iceland to accurately trace cases and prevent a problematic infection from going undetected.

“Sequencing does not take us that long,” explains Ólafur Thór Magnússon, head of the laboratory.

“About three hours or so is enough because we already have enough sequenced data to know what strain of the virus it is,” he adds.

The whole process can take a day and a half of work, however, but it has so far identified 463 different variants, called haplotypes by scientists.

Before sequencing, the DNA of each sample is taken, isolated and purified with magnetic beads that free it from excess matter.

Then he is moved to a spacious and bright room where dozens of teams, especially small machines that look like scanners, work noisily.

These machines are gene sequencers and are used to determine the coronavirus genome. Glass sheets containing the DNA molecules are placed inside it.

The technique has gained importance in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

“Sequencing the samples is important so that we can follow the evolution of the pandemic,” Health Minister Svandís Svavarsdóttir told AFP.

The information obtained is an important basis for making decisions about the preventive measures to be adopted, adds the person in charge.

Although the South African variant has not been detected in the country so far, 41 people have been identified as carriers of the British strain. All of them could be located at the borders, thanks to tests carried out on travelers, which prevented their spread on the island.

The DNA identification also allowed for example to establish a clear relationship between a pub in the center of Reykjavik with the majority of a focus of infections registered in mid-September on the island, which led to the closure of bars and clubs in the capital.

The 6 thousand cases of Covid-19 registered so far in Iceland, were sequenced, which makes the country a leader in the matter.

Although some countries such as the United Kingdom, Denmark, Australia or New Zealand also sequence significantly, none have reached the level of Iceland, although world statistics are incomplete.

On Friday, the WHO called on the international community to strengthen its capabilities to sequence and therefore detect these variants.

But why Iceland? Genetic research seems to hold no secrets from deCODE, which has already carried out the largest and most ambitious genetic study in history on a population.

In order to establish genetic risk factors published in 2015, the laboratory had to sequence the entire genome of 2,500 Icelanders and study the genetic profile of a third of the population. Compared to this, the Covid-19 analysis seems like child’s play.

“It is very easy to sequence this viral genome: there are only 30 thousand nucleotides. It’s nothing, “says Kári Stefánsson, president and founder of the company, smiling. Because the human genome analyzed in this place contains 3.4 billion pairs of these organic molecules, he clarifies.

But while sequencing has become a precious tool for mapping virus circulation, it has not yet generated any major scientific discoveries by deCODE. “Although there are differences between the numerous mutations of the virus, they are not sufficiently evident so that we can collect them”, recognizes Stefánsson.

THEY WILL APPLY SEROLOGICAL TESTS TO 7,500 HEALTH OFFICIALS TO KNOW IF THEY HAVE COVID-19

Serological tests.

Starting this Monday, January 18, a total of 7,500 officials of the Social Security Fund (CSS) of the four central provinces will be subjected to serological tests to determine whether or not they have been in contact with the virus. Covid-19.

This was announced by Luis Rodríguez, institutional medical director of the CSS de Herrera, who indicated that this “mass screening” will make it possible to define whether officials have developed antibodies because they have been in contact with the virus, or on the contrary, if they are positive without presenting symptoms. “That way we can isolate them immediately, so that they do not infect other colleagues,” he stressed.

Rodríguez stated that the Clinical Laboratory of the Roberto Ramírez de Diego de Chitré Polyclinic was chosen to perform all these tests.

First they applied the tests to the officials of the province of Herrera and the following days the personnel of the rest of the central provinces will be screened. The Chitré Polyclinic has the capacity to process about 500 tests daily.

DIGITAL REGISTRATION AND OTHER MECHANISMS TO ACCESS THE VACCINE AGAINST COVID-19

There will be several mechanisms for you to be vaccinated against covid-19. In addition to the digital inscription. What is sought is to have an estimate of the people who want to be vaccinated. If you agree to get vaccinated, you can access the form at vacunas.panamasolidario.gob.pa, there are already 280 thousand people registered. There will also be other information channels. Eduardo Ortega, consultant for the Covid-19 Vaccine Consortium, asks that those who know help older adults, since digital registration is an interesting tool. But we must also be attentive to the different ways in which people can contact the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), through the telephone lines, messages can be sent and communications will be made. For his part, the Administrator of Government Innovation (AIG), Luis Oliva, warns that of the 280 thousand people registered, 30% do not coincide with the address they have in the electoral court. For this reason, he clarifies that in order to identify if someone has made a change of residence and has not reported it to the Electoral Tribunal, it is important that they fill out the form. Of those registered, 25% suffer from chronic disease, 80% corroborated their data with the Minsa and the CSS. It will also be done with private clinics. This is a serious matter, it is about life and death, as the Vice Minister of Health, Ivette Berrío, considers it. She assures that they are betting on technology so that your information enters a database and you can receive on your cell phone or an email the day, place and all the information you require to know when to get vaccinated. In each one of the vaccination centers there will also be personnel from the Government Innovation Authority for this database. Oliva explains that people can go to the infoplazas for help if they don’t have a computer and internet. That already 3 telephone companies have given the link to free vaccines and is about to close conversations with a fourth company. So that people, even if they don’t have data, can access the portal for free. Each person will have a digital vaccination card showing the day, date and place of the application of the vaccine, among other information available on the Panama digital portal.

ORTEGA: PEOPLE WITH HIV SHOULD GET VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19 “THOUGH THERE IS LIMITED INFORMATION ON EFFECTIVENESS”

Just how many techniques ARE there for holding these micro-vials? Only three fingers? Really??

Dr. Eduardo Ortega, advisor to the Covid-19 Vaccine Research Consortium, said that although there is limited information on the efficacy of the coronavirus vaccine, in people with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), “they should be vaccinated to protect them ”.

This, after the director of the Foundation for the Well-Being and Dignity of People Affected by HIV-AIDS (Probidsida), Orlando Quintero, requested through a statement that the Ministry of Health of Panama clarify a circular on the population to which no the Pfizer / BioNtech vaccine should be given as “there is not enough data on efficacy and safety” and where these patients are included.

During a press conference, Ortega expressed “there is limited information in the research studies that have been carried out, there is no contraindication to vaccinate them, but there is a limitation in terms of efficacy, … it is possible that these people do not respond adequately to the two doses of the vaccine ”.

He reiterated “there is a precaution, but not a contraindication and these people should be vaccinated.”

He added that the Technical Council of the Expanded Program on Immunizations (EPI) is currently discussing information regarding people with HIV.

ROTATING CONTROL POSTS WILL BE ESTABLISHED TO CONTROL MOBILITY IN HERRERA

Osorio stressed that these points will be possible thanks to the participation of the National Police.

Rotating control points, day and night, to avoid mobility between the districts with the highest incidence of Covid-19 cases, the Regional Health Department of the Ministry of Health of Herrera will establish.

This was announced by Stayci Osorio, head of the Department of Public Health, who explained that the checkpoints that will be located during the day and at night, will not only reach the Chitré district, but also those of Ocú, Pesé and Santa María, that in recent days have been reporting a significant number of cases of Covid-19.

Osorio stressed that these points will be possible thanks to the participation of the National Police and the Directorate of Traffic Operations of the National Police.

She added that in the last two days (January 14 and 15) the technical personnel of Food Protection and Environmental Sanitation, supported by the National Police and the Joint Task Force, have been verifying compliance with the provisions in the establishments.

They also gave the pertinent guidelines in those establishments that during this period have to be closed and cannot serve the public in person or online.

PFIZER ASSURES THAT IT WILL BE ABLE TO LIMIT DELAYS IN VACCINE DELIVERY TO ONE WEEK

Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine.

The US group Pfizer, associated with the German laboratory BioNTech, announced on Saturday a “plan” that will limit the delay in the delivery of the vaccine against covid-19 to one week, when Europe feared a longer term, of “three to four weeks. ” “Pfizer and BioNTech have developed a plan to increase manufacturing capabilities in Europe and deliver many more doses in the second quarter,” both companies announced in a joint statement. See also: Pfizer vaccine appears to work against a mutation of the new variants “We will return to the initial delivery schedule in the European Union from the week of January 25, with an increase in deliveries from the week of February 15 “both groups added. “For this, certain modifications of the production processes are necessary from now on,” indicated both partners. Pfizer warned on Friday that due to works at a vaccine production plant in Puurs, Belgium, it should delay those deliveries. Berlin evoked a reduction in cadence “for three to four weeks.”

MALLS WARN THAT THE SECOND REOPENING WILL BE MORE DIFFICULT

More than 10 thousand workers will not be able to be reactivated after the reopening of the shopping centers in this second quarantine.

After the first quarantine, 30 thousand employment contracts had been reactivated, but the calculation for February 1 can only assume the reintegration of 20% of the personnel, that is, more than 10,000 workers because it is a season of low sales.

Nadyi Duque, president of the Panamanian Association of Shopping Centers (Apacecom) said that this time they have a date and are not in doubt of a reopening, which is positive. However, waiting 15 more days for a reopening is a serious blow to the commerce sector.

“It is important to prioritize the health of Panamanians, but there are other problems that affect life, such as not having an income, which affects mental health,” she said.

She affirmed that the productive sector of the country was not consulted on these measures that were taken, being an active entity in the production of goods.

Although the monetary impact for the commercial sector is unknown, the president of Apacecom assures that this measure impacts the sustainability of the businesses and therefore the reintegration of workers, which will decrease significantly.

Before the second quarantine, sales were between 60% and 80% and 50% of the workers had been reinstated, however, by February 1 that figure will only be 20%. “Again, companies will have problems to to be able to reopen their businesses and reactivate the jobs that last year had been maintained. The rest of the workers who were still suspended will continue to that extent and another group will be gradually reinstated, “he stressed.

She added that the measures taken are not the most effective alternatives because they make the poor poorer and contribute nothing to the development of the country. We must be more serious in the measures that are taken, because there is no study that says that contagion is occurring in companies, she said.

She called on the National Government to make a sacrifice in this whole issue, where the private sector has suffered the worst part.

Three out of every four jobs lost were in the Commerce, Agriculture, Construction, Tourism and Logistics sectors, sectors that together contribute more than half of the country’s workforce.

COVID-19 not only caused an unprecedented short-term labor catastrophe, but also significantly affected the economy’s ability to generate employment, particularly with low education.

For his part, Luis Padrón, spokesman for the National Association of Merchants (Anadeco), agrees with Duque and added that measures are being taken that are not consistent with reality.

“The problem is not in the reopening of trade but in compliance with biosecurity standards, which hinders the development of the trade sector,” he said.

Padrón said he is concerned about the health situation in the country, but also in the economic aspect because there are shops that will not reopen and others do not have to pay the payroll or services such as rent, energy and water.

Between 35% to 40% of workers could return as of February 1 when the shopping centers reopen their doors, Padrón said.

In the businessman’s opinion, selling by delivery is a “band aid” to sales, but it does not solve the problem. In addition, he assured that only 1% of the workers who employ in the sector are infected at work.

PERSPECTIVE

CONFINEMENT HAS IMPACTED SOCIETY: THE GORGAS STUDY

The pandemic and the restriction measures adopted by health authorities to curb the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus — the cause of the Covid-19 disease — have had a strong impact on Panamanian society.

This is concluded by the international study I-Share (International Sexual Health And Reproductive Health Survey), carried out in more than 45 countries, and carried out in Panama by a team of scientists from the Gorgas Commemorative Institute for Health Studies (Icges).

The study, which was carried out through a survey in which 960 people participated (563 women and 397 men), shows that uncertainty, death and illness, added to the effects and sequelae of Covid-19, have had consequences for psychological and social level.

The psychologist Marilú de Argote, who participated in the study, explained that in the survey it was observed that in the group of women aged 18 to 23 years, 53.6% reported experiencing a feeling of anger with the distancing measures. Meanwhile, in men in that age range, 52.1% expressed this feeling before measures by the authorities to stop the chain of transmission of the disease.

He stated that health authorities should be aware that a psychosomatic illness will not be isolated from the mental health of the population or from the social context from which it emerges, hence the importance of working together to establish mental health programs that allow helping the population faced with the chronic stress to which it is exposed by the pandemic.

In addition, she added that in the analysis of the data, they observed that a population with financial worries, job loss and health faces feelings of sadness, depression, decreased self-esteem, disappointment, helplessness and anger.

Meanwhile, Amanda Gabster, a researcher at Gorgas, indicated that the survey was conducted between August 8 and September 12, 2020, and people from 11 provinces and counties participated.

The population sample of the study is divided into 31.5% from rural areas and 63.5% from urban areas. Gabster specified that in March of last year Gorgas joined the initiative of this multicenter study to learn about nutrition, sexual and mental health. The research was approved by the National Research Bioethics Committee of Panama.

This is a list of the number of cases per day since the first case was discovered in Panama

If you don’t see a table of contents with the daily infection tally for Panama, that means you’re not on the website. Go there, when you’re bored or sitting on the “throne” with nothing much else to do.

These Coronavirus statistics go all the back to Panama’s “Day 0”.

END NOTES:

Since he was probably 4 years old, Brett Richard, AKA Brett Jr, AKA The Roblox Stock Holder, has had his heart set on getting a Husky. For those of you know how Husky’s are, you will probably do everything you can to NEVER obtain one. I was that person… …until recently. A friend recently posted on Facebook that a friend of hers had to give up their beloved dog or send off to a kennel. Who knew what would happen to their beloved KENDO then? I didn’t even think to consult with Queen Sayira, because she’d definitely say “Hell no!”, so I thought. We were the first to call and we were ready to adopt. I could barely contain myself, so I decided not to. I immediately, foolishly, informed our oldest boy that Kendo was soon to be a new addition to the household.

And then, I decided to let Queen Sayira in on our little secret. But I had to be smart about it, or I’ll lose my last kitchen pass for the year (who am I kidding, I only get one anyways!!). But to my joy and surprise, she LOVED the idea. So, as a family we sat around laughing at the crazy Husky videos on YouTube.com. If you’ve never seen them, just google “Husky arguing with owner” or “Husky talking” and then go from there.

Not our new dog…

Brandon couldn’t sleep at all that night. He had planned out all of the promises that he would break if we really got them the Husky. You know the ones, “I will clean my room every day.”, “I will take him for a walk twice a day.”, “I will do my homework on time and never have any incomplete.” (We both laughed really hard together at this last one.)

But, low and behold, it was not to be. I tried contacting the owner but he ignored my chats. We finally got back in touch with our friend who told us that the owner of the dog had a change of heart and would not be giving him away to anyone.

I was heartbroken. Me, the guy who didn’t even think of getting another dog, I was heartbroken. Truth be told, I was a little pissed off that this guy agreed to give us his dog and then not answer my messages. What a dick. Now, I get to tell the family that, nope, we would NOT be getting Kendo the Crazy Dude as they were already calling him. But Queen Sayira, in her infinite wisdom and lightening-speed decision prowess (unlike the local politicians), decided to reach out to some of her family in Pocri. Apparently, someone in the family breeds Huskies and she was bound and determined to get one, instead of breaking Brett Jr’s heart.

And sure enough, after a few phone calls and an exchange of chicheme recipes to sweeten the pot, we had our line on a new member to our family. And his mighty name shall be RAGNAR, which the kids will probably use the diminutive “Raggy” in our day to day. Oh, but not I, I will call him by his full, true viking name “RAGNAR LOTHBROK, WARRIOR KING OF NORWAY, DIRECT DECENDANT OF ODIN, RAIDER OF WESSEX AND HUSBAND OF LAGERTHA THE MIGHTY SHIELD MAIDEN”

Long live Ragnar; “Raggy” to his friends.
