So Many Lies; News about the Covid-19 vaccine; Aftermath left by the virus; Reasons for getting the vaccine; An Appropriate Cartoon

Friday, February 12, 2021

For those who read my weekly reports know, we have a new family member.  His name is Ragnar the Viking King Warrior.  Since naming him, we’ve made important adaptations to his full name when appropriate.  You’ll see what I mean as I explain herein.

When a new dog comes into your family, it´s common knowledge that you establish a series of goals and commitments that, although you may have meant well, you really never had any intentions of keeping.  In other words, you start living another lie.  In this case, we started living a series of lies.  It’s kind of like those shirts I have in my closet.  I keep the dress shirts hanging there, even though I’ve only worn dress shirts a handful of times in the last year during the course of this pandemic.  I think to myself, “I’ll make it an effort to wear those shirts this next week.”, and instead I reach for my Deadpool, Harley Davidson or any number of fishing shirts.  Or what about those “other” t-shirts in that same closet that simply don’t fit me anymore due to my pandemic-adjusted body.  You know what I mean, more fat down there, more muscle up there…. Anywho, these are lies that I’ve made to myself with good intentions, but knowingly will never really accomplish.

The first series of lies were established by our children and used as a tool of manipulation that we all know all too well. “We promise to take care of him!”, they said in perfect unison.  “Yeah, right.” I responded, laughing in blatant disbelief, snorting out my morning coffee. “Nice try, boys.  You’re going to have to negotiate better than that.  And if you’re going to lie, you have to lie better than you mom does to me on pay day.”  So, they offered a series of other shallow promises including, but not limited to:  We promise to:  exercise more, bathe the dogs, clean up our rooms, call their grandmother often, not steal Dad’s hidden snacks, help with the weekend chores without complaining about it and no more asking for toys and games all the time.  Funny they didn’t lie about “doing their homework on time”.  I suppose everyone has a limit to just how big of a lie you’re willing to make.

The next series of lies came from me.  “I will have nothing to do with the new dog.  Feeding him, cleaning up after him, etc is all on you guys!”  “I will not tolerate any funny business like chewing on things or loud noises out of him either.”  I said that, but right now as I type, Ragnar the Annoying Beast is chewing on my original Crocs office loafers… …while they’re on my feet and I just called him a “good boy”.

Then the whopper of a lie was, “I promise not to love the dog more than I love my family.”…. Let’s just say that the person who regurgitated that sucker, well, her nickname rhymes with “Bean”.  As she’ll tell me and the boys, “You don’t need air conditioning, just wear less clothes.”, she will simultaneously turn on the AC from the office, dining room and living rooms just in case Ragnar the Spoiled Rotten SOB decided he needed to go to another room.

MORE FUN RAGNAR THE EVIL BEING FACTS:  The Bean… …oops, I meant, “The Queen”, has three standard phrases that she yells out randomly during any given day.  In no particular order, they are:

  1. Ragnar, what are you eating?!
  2. Ragnar, get the hell out of my plants!!
  3. Ragnar, stop biting me!!!!

Coincidentally, these are the same primary phrases she yells at me on a daily basis.

Enjoy today’s compendium of fascinating bad news!

TOP NEWS and TIDBITS:

Yoli’s Wisdom:

When it comes to getting vaccinated against covid-19, you don’t have to be picky. Experts say you should get the first licensed vaccine they offer you.

The most recent covid vaccine, from Johnson & Johnson, is probably slightly less effective in preventing the disease than the two vaccines already given in the United States, from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

On January 29, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) announced that, in a 45,000-person trial, its vaccine was 66% effective in preventing moderate to severe cases of the disease.

According to the company, none of those vaccinated was hospitalized or died from covid. J&J communicated that it would request authorization from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) immediately. If the agency authorizes its use, millions of doses could be distributed starting in late February.

J & J’s vaccine is similar to Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech, but uses a different strategy to transport the genetic code into human cells to stimulate immunity to disease.

In fall clinical trials, Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines were 94% effective against COVID. They also avoided almost all serious cases.

But the difference in those levels of effectiveness can be misleading. The vaccines were tested in different locations and at different stages of the pandemic. Additionally, J&J gave their trial subjects a single dose, while Moderna and Pfizer administered two doses, 28 and 21 days apart, respectively.

However, the bottom line is that all three do a good job of preventing severe cases of covid.

“It’s like you want a Lamborghini or a Chevy to get to work,” said Dr. Gregory Poland, director of the Mayo Clinic Vaccine Research Group. “In the end, I just need to get to work. If there’s a Chevy available, sign me up. “

So although expert panels may debate in the future about which vaccine is best for whom, “from a personal and public health perspective, the best advice for now is to get vaccinated as soon as possible, because the sooner we all get vaccinated, the better. we will be, ”said Dr. Norman Hearst, a family physician and epidemiologist at the University of California-San Francisco.

Here are five reasons why you should get the J&J vaccine – assuming the FDA clears it – if it’s the one they offer you first:

1. ALL THREE VACCINES PROTECT AGAINST HOSPITALIZATION AND DEATH.

Of the 10 severe cases in the Pfizer clinical trial, nine received a placebo, or sham vaccine, and none of the 30 severe cases in the Moderna trial were suffered by people who had received the true vaccine.

Johnson & Johnson did not release specific figures, but did report that none of the vaccinated patients had to be hospitalized and none died. “The real goal is to keep people out of the hospital, out of intensive care and out of the morgue,” said Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Center for Vaccine Education at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “This vaccine does it well.”

2. ASSESSING THE LEVELS OF EFFECTIVENESS WOULD BE LIKE COMPARING PEARS TO APPLES.

The data that Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech submitted to the FDA came from large clinical trials that took place during the summer and early fall in the United States.

At that time, none of the new covid variants had emerged, some of which might better evade the immune responses produced by vaccines. Instead, the J&J trial began in September and was administered to people from South America, South Africa, and the United States.

The new variants from Brazil and South Africa appear to be somewhat better at evading vaccine defenses, and a new variant in California – where many J&J volunteers have signed up – may also have that feature.

J & J’s vaccine was 72% effective against moderate to severe COVID in the US portion of the trial, compared with 57% in South Africa, where the dominant strain is a more contagious mutant virus.

Another vaccine, made by the Maryland company Novavax, was 90% effective in a large British clinical trial, but only 50% effective in South Africa. The Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines might not have had the same dramatic results had they been tried more recently, or in South Africa.

“This vaccine has been tested in the pandemic in the here and now,” said Dr. Dan Barouch, a Harvard Medical School professor whose laboratory, at the Virology and Vaccine Research Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, developed the J&J vaccine. “The pandemic is much more complex today than it was a few months ago.”

Part of the difference in results could also be attributed to different patient populations or disease conditions, and not just the mutant virus.

A large percentage of South Africans carry the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. Chinese vaccines have performed very differently in the countries where they have been tested in recent months.

“We don’t know what vaccines Lamborghinis are,” Poland said, “because you can’t make true comparisons.”

3. SPEED IS ESSENTIAL.

To stop the spread of covid, the mutation of the virus that causes it and the continuous blows to the economy, it is necessary that we all get vaccinated as soon as possible. But the lack of vaccines has been felt dramatically.

The mother of Dr. Virginia Banks, 103, is one of the few living Americans who were present in the last great pandemic in the country, the 1918 flu, and yet she has not been able to get vaccinated against covid, according to Banks , a Northeast Ohio Infectious Disease Associates physician in Youngstown.

Patients cannot demand the type of vaccine they want to get, Banks said. People “have to get vaccinated with any of the vaccines that are available so that we can get closer to group immunity” and thus stop the spread of the virus.

Banks has gone to great lengths to promote covid vaccines to skeptical minority communities, frequently appearing on local television news and making at least two appearances on Zoom each week. To date, blacks have been vaccinated against COVID at much lower rates than non-Hispanic whites.

“There is a downside to waiting,” said Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and health policy at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Delaying vaccination carries serious risks, as more than 3,800 Americans die each day from COVID.

4. THE J&J VACCINE SEEMS TO HAVE SOME REAL ADVANTAGES.

First, it appears to cause fewer serious side effects, such as fever and malaise that some recipients of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccine suffered.

High fever and dehydration are especially worrisome in frail older people who “are on the brink,” explained Dr. Kathryn Edwards, scientific director of Vanderbilt’s Vaccine Research Program. The J&J vaccine “may be the best for these patients.”

Many people may also prefer the J&J vaccine because it is “given one time,” Schaffner said. It is also easier for those who apply: you just have to schedule an appointment.

5. THE J&J VACCINE IS MUCH EASIER TO SHIP, STORE AND MANAGE.

While Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine can be stored in regular refrigerators, Pfizer-BioNTech’s should be stored long-term in “ultra-cold” freezers at temperatures between -112 and -76 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the Centers for Control and Prevention. of Diseases (CDC).

Both Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines must be used or discarded within six hours of opening the vial. J&J vaccine vials can be stored in a refrigerator and reused if doses remain.

“Right now we have mass immunization clinics that are open, but they don’t have vaccines,” Offit said. “But this is a single dose and easy to store and handle.”

Where you live – and not your personal preference – can determine which vaccine you receive, said E. John Wherry, director of the Institute of Immunology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He noted that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is an easier option for rural areas.

“A vaccine doesn’t have to be 95% effective to be an incredible leap forward,” Wherry said. “When we get to the point where we have options on which vaccine to administer, it will be a luxury to have to debate that question.”

AIG OPENS REGISTRATION FOR THE COVID19 VACCINATION OF FOREIGNERS AS WELL.

The National Authority for Government Innovation (AIG) announced that as of this Friday, February 12, 2021, the vaccination registry against Covid-19 is available for foreigners in the country.

From now on, the option for foreigners with or without an affiliation number is visible within the vaccination applicant registry.

In the first case, it is about those foreigners who have a filiation number, because at some point (or currently) they have done some procedure with the National Migration Service (SNM), reported Luis Oliva, general administrator of the AIG.

“We have a database of 60 thousand people that Migration passed to us. Those people who have this number can enter the portal, “said Oliva, in statements to Telemetro Reporta.

The official added that there is the necessary information to validate the data of these people, to update what their address would be or if they are patients or not with chronic diseases.

Oliva affirmed that those foreigners who do not have an affiliation number, that is, they have not done any immigration procedures, will have the opportunity to put their information in this registry. However, they are asked for a photo of their passport to be able to check the information they put on the form, he explained.

Oliva acknowledged that the number of foreigners who do not have an affiliation number is unknown, but urged them to enter the authorized portal that will allow them to identify themselves and show the authorities that they want to get the vaccine.

“The Minister of Health has been very emphatic that we are going to vaccinate all those who are residing in the country, according to the phase that corresponds to them,” he remarked.

However, Oliva clarified that it is important “to have them identified to make the correct coordination when the vaccines arrive” against the new coronavirus.

In turn, the official reiterated that, so far, there are 430,000 registered in the Covid-19 vaccination registry portal.

“We are seeing a fairly high percentage of people who have changed their residence, or it is not the same one they have in the Electoral Tribunal,” he commented.

He also announced that in the coming days the first cut will be made to prepare the vaccination registers for phase 2.

“It is important that all citizens complete the form to have accurate information for programming,” he stressed.

PRIVATE COMPANIES IN PANAMA CAN BRING VACCINES AGAINST COVID-19 FOR THEIR EMPLOYEES AND EVEN FOR SALE

Minister Luis Sucre said that, although a request was sent to Russia to purchase the Sputnik V vaccine, they have not yet entered into negotiations.

The acquisition of the vaccine against covid-19 is not reserved exclusively for the Government.

The Minister of Health (Minsa), Luis Francisco Sucre, said on Monday that private companies that want to buy it can do so, although he stressed that they must have all the necessary documentation.

“There is no problem that the private sector brings vaccines both for employees and even if it were for sale. But they must comply with the requirements of Pharmacies and Drugs,” he explained.

Along these lines, he stressed that as a company they must have the patent and legal documents in order.

He also recognized that it would be of great help to speed up the vaccination process.

“Any company that wants to help and solve the number of people who want to be vaccinated, the Ministry of Health has its doors open to them,” he stressed.

On the other hand, he said that, although a request was sent to Russia to acquire the Sputnik V vaccine, they have not yet entered into negotiations.

Sucre said that they are waiting for Russia’s response to start negotiating.

Regarding the vaccination process, in the appearance in the National Assembly, the high authorities reported that when the rest of the population begins to be inoculated, San Miguelito will be one of the first places to receive it.

ENABLE PLATFORM TO CREATE SECURITY PIN FOR THE DIGITAL VALUE

Security PIN of the Digital Voucher to guarantee safe purchases, registration is mandatory.

This Thursday, the Authority for Government Innovation (AIG) enabled the platform to create the security PIN of the Digital Voucher, in order to avoid fraudulent transactions in businesses, guaranteeing a traceability of the system for the beneficiaries of economic support.

It is a tool enabled through the portal http//panamadigital.gob.pa, where people to register must enter the services tab and then the option My Wallet.

Once in the section, the beneficiary of the Digital Voucher or Solidarity Voucher must enter their identity card and answer 3 personal questions with multiple-choice answers to validate that they indeed receive the benefit. If you make a mistake, the step can be done again (two attempts).

When your PIN is activated, the system will show the beneficiary the balance status and purchase history.

Luis Oliva, administrator of the AIG, indicated that this PIN will be required to validate each transaction made by citizens in the different supermarkets and grocery stores in the country at the national level, which could be mandatory from the month of March. Also through the tool they can check their balance and purchase history.

“If the citizen does not have internet in his residence, he can also go to the Infoplazas to create his Digital Vale PIN for free. In this center, a service agent will collaborate with you to validate the identity of the person requesting the PIN and will guide you so that you are the beneficiary of the Digital Voucher, who completes the Registration information with their respective username, password and security PIN ”, Oliva said at a press conference.

Regarding the complaints of fraudulent transactions, the official indicated that an approximate of 2,950 cases of people who have been affected by the decrease in their Vale Digital balance have been presented at the 311 Citizen Service Center, at the time of making some transaction in the shops.

It should be noted that the Citizen Attention Center 311 is available for guidance and steps to be followed by the beneficiaries. Similarly, telephone line 140 has been enabled, in case citizens forget their username and system PIN.

EXPERT: SPUTNIK V VACCINE MUST BE SUBMITTED TO A DOSSIER FOR AUTHORIZATION IN PANAMA

“Sputnik V” vaccine in the fight against COVID-19. Image is upside down and backwards in representation of their security protocols…

Dr. Eduardo Ortega, advisor to the Covid-19 Vaccine Research Consortium, said on Monday that the coronavirus vaccine, Sputnik V from Russia, must be submitted to a dossier for the authorization request in Panama.

This, after the Minister of Health of Panama, Luis Francisco Sucre, confirmed the request to Russia of three million doses of its vaccine, clarifying that they are waiting for it to “be certified.”

Ortega explained that the dossier is “a document that contains more complete information than a scientific publication, where preclinical data on laboratory animals, studies of phases 1, 2 and 3 and the process to produce the vaccine are added.

He explained that the vaccine’s efficacy is 92% against symptomatic disease according to the publication of the medical journal The Lancet. “Reinforcing the confidence in the information in which very rare adverse events were presented and it only remains to confirm the manufacture of the vaccine and that is often given by a reference regulatory agency.”

He argued that the laboratory that produces the vaccine in Russia must answer how many doses they can make available to Panama and what is the cost of each dose of vaccine.

The intention of the Government of Panama is to vaccinate 80% of the population.

MINISTER SUCRE REVEALS THAT PANAMA HAS REQUESTED MORE THAN 8 MILLION VACCINES

The request made to Russia has the sole intention of strengthening the vaccination process.

The Minister of Health, Luis Francisco Sucre, detailed this Sunday, February 7, that Panama has asked pharmaceutical companies and Russia for a total of 8 million 513 thousand vaccines against Covid-19.

Sucre recalled that Panama asked the Covax portfolio for 1 million 121 doses, while the company Pfizer 3 million.

Meanwhile, the AstraZeneca group was ordered 1 million 92 thousand vaccines and Johnson & Johnson 300 thousand doses.

In addition, the request made to Russia for 3 million Sputnik V vaccines has the sole intention of strengthening the vaccination process in the country.

However, the official clarified that it is waiting for the Russian vaccine to be certified by regulatory bodies.

But just as it was done with the other pharmaceutical companies, the process of conversations takes place in parallel, “for when the authorizations are obtained and Panama has finished the negotiations.”

According to Sucre, the government’s intention is to vaccinate 80% of the population in order “to guarantee the highest coverage throughout the country.”

He added that currently in the world only “43 countries have started their vaccination process” and Panama is within that group.

COCLÉ PRESENTS A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN COVID-19 CASES

Cases of the new coronavirus show a decrease of 60% in the province of Coclé, precisely in the districts that registered a high incidence of the virus such as Antón, Aguadulce and Penonomé.

While the rapid response team of the Health district performs swabs in the northern area of the districts of La Pintada and Penonomé due to outbreaks of contagion in these remote areas.

“The drop has been notorious in Antón, Aguadulce and Penonomé, due to the control and good mechanism that has been carried out with the teams in charge of traceability,” said Mario Lozada, director of the Ministry of Health in this province.

MONITORING OF PEOPLE VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19 WILL BE CARRIED OUT THROUGH A DIGITAL TOOL

The vaccination process is carried out by an executing unit.

Dr. Eduardo Ortega explained that, through a tool, developed by the Authority for Government Innovation (AIG), the monitoring of people vaccinated against covid-19 in Panama will be carried out.

The vaccination process is developed by an executing unit:

  • A nurse giving the vaccine
  • A nurse preparing the vaccine
  • A traceability officer: responsible for digitally capturing the data of the vaccinated person.

This officer records the identity card, name, telephone number, sex, address, place of work, vaccination date, and the barcode of the dial from which the person receives the inoculation.

This database is crossed with the PCR diagnostic one, so that it is possible to know in real time if a vaccinated person will present symptoms of covid-19 and if a diagnostic test is done.

To date, the vaccination process has proceeded normally, and 12,806 vaccines have been administered.

Of the total number of vaccinated, who in this phase correspond to health personnel, 42 developed symptoms and were found to be positive.

Ortega explained that the positives were incubating the virus at the time they were vaccinated.

In each province there has been at least one vaccinated person who has had symptoms and has been tested for covid-19.

Two thirds of the people vaccinated are women.

CORONAVIRUS IN CHINA: 4 FACTS ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF THE PANDEMIC REVEALED BY WHO AFTER ITS MISSION IN WUHAN

Wuhan was the first place in the world where the virus was detected.

It was a difficult mission and it ends without a definitive conclusion, but with important details.

The international team sent by the World Health Organization (WHO) to China to investigate the origin of the covid-19 pandemic concluded its stay in the country with a press conference in which it revealed some keys to its findings.

“It has not changed our understanding [of the coronavirus], but we definitely know more about it,” said Peter Ben Embarek, WHO chief of mission and zoonoses specialist.

His investigation lasted about two weeks and was strictly controlled by the Chinese authorities, who initially resisted this mission amid calls from the US to be more transparent and criticism from Beijing of Washington for “politicizing” the issue. .

After months of negotiations and once in the country, from the WHO they assured that the Chinese experts on the ground had been open with them.

We summarize the first WHO conclusions announced in a nearly three-hour conference.

1- THE LEAK FROM A LABORATORY IS “EXTREMELY IMPROBABLE”

At the press conference, held in Wuhan, the head of the international mission dismissed the theory that the virus had leaked from a laboratory, an argument that the Donald Trump government insisted on without presenting any evidence and that has been the subject of of conspiracy theories.

Specifically, the Trump administration pointed to the possibility that the virus emerged from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, one of the main in China in the study of level 4 pathogens, which require the highest degree of biological safety, and that it was one of those designated by the authorities to analyze the genome sequence of the new coronavirus.

After visiting this laboratory and others, Embarek highlighted the “strict security protocols” in this type of facility and argued that before the appearance of the virus “no scientific publication or any report in any laboratory in the world” had spoken about it.

Leaks of this type are “rare,” he remarked.

Therefore, the WHO team pointed out that this line of research will not be included in future studies.

2- BATS

The WHO team investigated four potential sources of the origin of SARS-CoV-2 transmission to humans:

Direct transmission from animal to human

Transmission through an intermediate animal host (from animal to animal and then to humans)

Transmission through frozen food in the cold chain

Possible leak from a laboratory

“The investigators consider that the most probable is the second option and this line of investigation was prioritized”, informed the correspondent of the BBC in China Stephen McDonell, who attended the press conference.

“Everything continues to point to a reservoir of this virus, or a similar virus, in bat populations,” said Embarek.

However, they considered it unlikely that this was found in Wuhan. The team, therefore, tried to find “other animal species that could contribute to introduce the virus” in the Chinese city, as intermediate hosts.

“It does not appear that there was a large circulation of the virus in any animal species in the country,” where Chinese scientists analyzed thousands of species without being able to identify any especially carriers, he said.

3- COLD CHAIN

Although transmission through an intermediate animal host “is the most likely [cause] and the one that will require further study and investigation,” Embarek also considered transmission through some frozen food from the cold chain possible, although he said they didn’t know much about it.

The zoologist explained that the team had identified vendors from the Huanan “wet” market, to which some of the first official cases of COVID-19 were linked and in which frozen animal products were sold, including wild animals.

The possible path from any animal species of origin to the Huanan market could have been long and convulsive, including transboundary movement “

Peter Ben Embarek, Head of the WHO International Expert Mission in China and Zoonosis Specialist

“So we have the potential to continue this trail and investigate the supply chain and the animals that were distributed to the market,” he stressed.

The Chinese authorities have attributed the latest outbreaks in the country to frozen foods imported from abroad and people from other countries, suggesting that the virus may have originated in another nation.

“We know that the virus can survive in conditions found in these freezing, cold environments, but we don’t really know if the virus can be transmitted to humans” or under what conditions, Embarek said.

Hence, he recommended further studies in this area.

4- BEFORE HUANAN

The WHO team also revealed that they did not find “strong evidence” that the virus was circulating in Wuhan before the first cases were recorded in December 2019.

“To understand the outlook for December 2019, we embarked on a very detailed and in-depth investigation of other cases that may not have been detected, prior to 2019,” Embarek explained.

“And the bottom line was that we found no evidence of large outbreaks that could be related to COVID-19 cases before December 2019 in Wuhan or elsewhere,” he added.

However, Dutch virologist Marion Koopmans explained that that does not mean there were not, reported the BBC journalist.

The first cases in the city did not occur only in the Huanan market, but also “simultaneously” in other places not related to that one, of whose trace they did not provide more details.

In that regard, Liang Wannian, the head of the team of Chinese experts that investigated SARS-CoV-2, pointed out that the virus could circulate elsewhere earlier.

“In the two months leading up to December there is no evidence that he was in the city,” Liang said, pointing to possible flaws in detecting the virus in other regions.

The WHO experts therefore considered that the study should be expanded and examined blood samples and animal reservoirs both in China and in other countries.

“The possible path from any animal species of origin to the Huanan market could have been long and convulsive, including cross-border movement,” Embarek said.

Tracing the origin of the virus, she concluded, is a “work in progress.”

RT IN PANAMA REMAINS BELOW 1.0

The RT remains below 1.0 nationally.

The RT or effective reproductive index of covid-19 cases in Panama is 0.80, according to the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

Last week, the RT was at 0.77; and the previous one at 0.78.

In the last 4 weeks, the RT has remained below 1, according to the authorities, who explain that the reproductive index decreased because the speed of infection decreased.

With regard to deaths, they indicated that the fatality rate is 1.7%.

THE PROJECT OF LAW THAT EXTENDS THE SUSPENSION OF CONTRACTS IS APPROVED IN FIRST DEBATE

Work Commission.

The Labor, Health and Social Development Committee of the National Assembly approved this Thursday, February 11, in the first debate the bill 542, which establishes temporary measures to preserve employment, normalize labor relations and extend the suspension of contracts due to to the pandemic.

The document establishes temporary measures and most of its provisions will govern until December 31, 2021.

Accordingly, the Minister of Labor, Doris Zapata, recently explained, “some opportune elements already extinct in Law 157 of 2020 are rescued, such as the regulation of the termination of the employment relationship by mutual agreement and the cancellation of the total benefits to those to which the worker is entitled when the termination of the employment relationship occurs within the three months following the reinstatement after the suspension ”.

The project also establishes as a prioritized return, in the first month of reinstatement, all workers who have union, maternity and disabled persons. Likewise, preference is given, for gradual reinstatement, to workers who have been suspended for a longer time.

The National Unemployment Registry is also created in the Ministry of Labor and Labor Development.

During the discussion in the first debate, the deputies included a new article on unjustified dismissals. “The action or omission of the employer that prevents the return of the worker to his job, once the suspension of the contract ends, will be considered as unjustified verbal dismissal,” says the article.

430 THOUSAND PANAMANAMANS HAVE REGISTERED TO RECEIVE VACCINES AGAINST COVID-19: AIG

Luis Oliva, general administrator of the Government Innovation Authority (AIG), revealed this Wednesday, February 10, that so far 430 thousand people have registered to receive one of the vaccines against Covid-19.

Oliva explained that they have verified that 70% of those registered reside in the area that they indicated to the Electoral Tribunal.

It has also been detected that 25% of those enrolled are patients with chronic diseases, such as hypertension.

He added that for this reason they are in the process of crossing the databases of the Social Security Fund and the Ministry of Health to verify that they do indeed suffer from a chronic disease.

DON’T LOSE YOUR MEDICAL COVERAGE IN TIMES OF PANDEMIC, THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT DO

Brett’s Comments:

This, of course, is an article in a Panamanian newspaper and may not affect YOUR insurance in particular. That being said, it would be a good idea to ask your broker or insurance company about your coverage and what you’re allowed to do as per your respective policy.

Did you know that you could lose your medical or hospitalization insurance coverage if you ingest any product that is not indicated for the treatment of Covid-19.

Pandemics are excluded from health and hospitalization insurance contracts worldwide, however, insurers in Panama decided to cover Covid-19 claims.

Now, if the person self-medicates, for example, with chlorine dioxide, which is a very dangerous chemical that is promoted as a treatment against Covid-19, the insurer may not cover medical care.

Arturo Sáenz, president of the Panamanian Association of Insurers, warns that insurers are recognizing Covid-19 claims. However, it could be the case if a person is aggravated by ingesting products such as chlorine dioxide, which has proven adverse health effects, it could be the case that insurers limit coverage for ingesting that in a non-responsible manner.

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) issued a chlorine dioxide alert, as international regulatory entities such as the FDA and WHO warn of the health risks when taking drugs with these products.

The Director of Pharmacy and Drugs of the Minsa explains that there are already countries where insurers are saying that if it is proven that the person dies and used chlorine dioxide, they will not recognize payments to relatives.

Chlorine dioxide, also known as a “miracle mineral supplement,” is a chemical used as a commercial bleach and disinfectant, much like chlorine.

Alex González, director of Health Services and Benefits of the Social Security Fund (CSS) warns that there are many movements that sell it as a treatment for COVID-19. But that all the treatments that doctors propose must have scientific and evidence-based medicine-based components.

Sáenz adds that the diagnosis of the person must be supported and this is done through the report of the hospital or the patient’s treating doctor.

Be very careful with these treatments, mostly on social media. If you suspect Covid-19, get a swab and if it is positive, go to the doctor to receive the appropriate treatment.

MEDUCA: 81% OF SCHOOLS ARE READY FOR THE VACCINATION PROCESS

The internet will be necessary in schools to record people’s data on the AIG platform.

The Ministry of Education (Meduca) reported that 81% of the 1,010 schools that will be used in phase two to vaccinate the population over 60 years old against Covid-19 were already adequate.

Ricardo Sánchez, Vice Minister of Infrastructure at Meduca, unofficially said that they could be starting with the San Miguelito, Central Panama and West Panama regions.

According to the official, the schools were equipped to handle a maximum of 3,000 people per school.

For example, in the San Miguelito region, 22 schools will be used to vaccinate some 52,000 people over 60 years of age. In West Panama there would be 67 thousand and in central Panama, about 160 thousand.

Phase two details. The vaccinated

Stage one of phase two includes people over 60 years of age, and the population between 16 and 59 years old with chronic diseases.

Stage two of the same phase covers teachers and administrators of schools and universities.

Sánchez says that for this stage, schools are being intervened so that they have water, electricity and, in most cases, the internet, as requested by the Government Innovation Authority (AIG) and the Ministry of Health.

In addition to Meduca, evaluations are made with the provincial technical boards, headed by the governors.

“The schools must have internet so that those who are immunized can be registered on the platform that the AIG maintains for these purposes,” he said.

In this context, he expressed that they have a database provided by the Electoral Tribunal, but they know that many people do not live where they vote. “That is why we need to update it and locate them to be more clear about the amount that will go to each educational center,” he said.

It was the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, who announced that for phase two of the vaccination, people must go to schools, as occurs during general elections.

According to Meduca, beneficiaries will be notified which school to go to; Once there, they must present their identification card and they will be told in which room they should line up to get the vaccine. It is estimated that each school will have between two and three classrooms.

Although the Ministry of Health has not defined when phase two of vaccination against Covid-19 begins, in its initial plan it estimated that it would be from April. In addition, at the time it reported that those vaccinated during this phase would receive the AstraZeneca vaccine, which is evaluated by the World Health Organization.

SMALL HOTELS ARE READY TO RECEIVE TOURISTS

Small hoteliers in the interior of the country are ready to serve the people who will arrive at beaches and spas to enjoy the summer amid biosecurity measures established by the Ministry of Health (Minsa).

For Ovidio Díaz, from the Association of Small Hoteliers, the problem of crowds “is not the responsibility of hoteliers but of the authorities”, who have to control and penalize as much as possible all those who fail to comply with the measures imposed by the government.

He considered that, although the opening of beaches means an influx of tourists, it is unknown if the occupations will increase, but it is a step forward.

“The economic situation is going to get worse and what is coming is a bigger problem, we will have the combination of a virus with hunger, despair and the events of crimes and robberies that sometimes arise from an economic-social problem,” said Díaz .

The Association of Small Hotels of Panama is made up of 31 hotels, 800 rooms and 3,500 direct employees, the vast majority of whom have been unemployed, according to Díaz. He stressed that they have always expressed their commitment to be vigilant in complying with the measures, to control tourists and to hire personnel, so controlled opening is a great alternative.

“We must reinforce vigilance, citizens must be aware, we as businessmen are willing to contribute whatever it takes so that the pandemic is controlled,” he said.

Díaz was optimistic and assured that together we can move forward, but cooperation is required to do so in the shortest possible time.

Meanwhile, he hopes that the weekend quarantine will be removed soon, but it is important that tourists can cross the health fences with the reservation made in hotels, since when they have these reservations a filter has been made on where comes and the test for COVID-19.

A STETHOSCOPE THAT DETECTS COVID BY THE SOUND OF BREATH

Connected to a smartphone or tablet, the stethoscope makes it possible to recognize someone affected by covid-19.

Researchers from the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) are finalizing a stethoscope that thanks to artificial intelligence is capable of detecting covid-19 by its effect on the sound of lung respiration, Swiss television RTS reported today.

The intelligent digital stethoscope, also called a pneumoscope by its designer, the doctor Alain Gervaix, began to be developed in 2017, initially to detect pneumonia, although with the arrival of the pandemic the approach has been changed to also identify coronavirus in patients with it. lungs.

Connected to a smartphone or tablet, the stethoscope, equipped with an algorithm made with data collected from lung sounds from different patients, allows to recognize someone affected by covid-19.

As RTS explains, each lung disease or infection, be it asthma, pneumonia, covid-19 or bronchitis, causes the lung to sound different during breathing.

The algorithm, called DeepBreath (“deep breathing”), was developed by the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne (EPFL), one of the leading technology centers in Switzerland.

Preliminary results seem to indicate that DeepBreath is able to identify COVID-19 even in asymptomatic patients, and for now detects up to eight out of 10 cases diagnosed as positive in PCR tests.

RECOVERING FROM COVID-19: FATIGUE, HAIR LOSS AND LACK OF ATTENTION HAVE BEEN DOCUMENTED

Hair loss was reported among recoveries from covid-19.

The secrets of the coronavirus remain unknown in detail, more than a year after its spread worldwide.

While scientists work day and night to find an effective treatment against the infection, another group of experts is studying the sequelae linked to covid-19. As time passes, more data is available.

An investigation published on the MedRxiv site reviewed more than 18 thousand publications in which the most common covid-19 sequelae were exposed. The work collected more than 55 possible sequels, however, there are five that are more common.

At the top of the list were fatigue (55%), headache (44%), inattention (27%), hair loss (25%) and dyspnea (shortness of breath with 24%).

Study participants ranged in age from 17 to 87 years, and the follow-up time ranged from 15 to 110 days after SARS-CoV-2 viral infection.

For those in charge of the investigation it is important that the sequelae are addressed by multidisciplinary teams.

In Panama, postcovid clinics have been opened to follow up those patients who, after recovering, still have ailments.

Lirineth Arosemena, from the Manuel Ferrer postcovid clinic, explained that an average of eight patients who arrive with sequelae are treated per day.

“We have various sequelae. These can appear early or late. The main ones are dyspnea, fatigue, fatigue, chest pain and insomnia. The patient complains that he can no longer perform activities that he did before and if he walks he becomes agitated” the doctor told Sertv Noticias.

She stressed that the treatment will depend on the symptoms, but in the case of dyspnea and fatigue, respiratory therapy is sent to the patients.

SPAIN LIMITS APPLICATION OF THE ASTRAZENECA VACCINE TO UNDER 55 YEARS OLD

AstraZeneca vaccine. They claim that size doesn’t matter.

The Spanish Public Health authority determined this Friday that the AstraZeneca anticovid vaccine will be used only in people under 55 years of age in the country, due to lack of sufficient data on its effects beyond that age.

“The Public Health Commission, meeting in plenary session this Friday and following the scientific evidence, has approved setting the maximum age of 55 years of people who will receive the doses of the vaccine against covid-19 from AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford in Spain, “said the statement from the Ministry of Health.

Spain thus joins the list – and was even more cautious – of European countries that do not recommend this vaccine for those over 65 years of age, contrary to what is stipulated by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which approved its use in the European Union for everyone over 18 years of age.

The German vaccine authority was the first, last week, to recommend that the AstraZeneca vaccine not be administered to people over 65 years of age, considering that there is insufficient information to determine its effectiveness after that age.

Other countries did too, like France. Switzerland, for its part, asked for “additional data” before giving the green light to its use.

The vaccine from AstraZeneca, a pharmaceutical company that angered European leaders over delayed delivery of doses, was the third to be authorized by the EU, after Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna.

Spain has administered about 1.9 million doses, and plans to have 70% of its 47 million inhabitants immunized by the summer, a goal that the government guarantees despite delays in receiving doses from laboratories.

Health Minister Carolina Darias said this week that the government was open to the possibility of Spain administering the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, as long as it receives the green light from the EMA.

The Director General of Income Publio De Gracia.

“There is no intention at this time to increase the ITBMS, it remains 7%”, as emphasized this Wednesday in a press conference, the Director General of Income (DGI) of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Publio De Gracia.

He explained that while it is true that the country is currently experiencing a difficult economic situation as a result of the pandemic, all decisions must be taken together with all the sectors involved.

He added that all the actions taken by the national government are aimed at causing an economic recovery.

STUDY: USING 2 MOUTH COVERS PROTECTS BETTER AGAINST COVID-19

Study: Wearing 2 masks protects better against COVID-19. Hell, why not 3 or 4??

US government researchers concluded that wearing two masks is better than one to slow the spread of COVID-19, but health authorities did not recommend their widespread use.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on Wednesday the results of a laboratory experiment that separated two artificial heads nearly 2 meters (6 feet) apart to see how many Particles the size of the coronavirus, spewed out by one, were inhaled by the other.

The researchers found that wearing a cloth or surgical mask blocked 40% of the particles that made their way towards the head that was inhaling. When a cloth mask was worn over a surgical one, up to 80% of the particles were blocked.

If both heads were double-masked, more than 95% of the particles were blocked, said Dr. John Brooks of the CDC.

“The first challenge is to get as many people as possible to wear masks and for those who wear them, it’s to help them get the best benefit,” Brooks said.

The study had many limitations: The researchers used one brand of surgical mask and one type of cloth mask, and it is not clear if the results would be the same with all products, but the study echoes previous research indicating that two masks they are better than one or none.

Some Americans have already started wearing double masks. Experts believe that is due, at least in part, to concerns about new strains that have been discovered and are spreading more easily.

The recommendations of health authorities have evolved throughout the pandemic.

When the COVID-19 crisis began and the masks disappeared from stores, the authorities advised against their use. “Seriously folks, STOP BUYING MASKS!” Then-United States Director of Public Health Jerome Adams tweeted nearly a year ago.

Two months later, after it became clear that infected people with no symptoms could spread the virus, the CDC began recommending that people wear face masks in public.

The use of face masks has increased and in some places they are mandatory, but many Americans continue not to use them.

END NOTES:
