Brett’s first ever Restaurant review:

Every week I have to eat outside the home as work is in the city and home is… …not.  Lunchbagging my meals just gives me cold meals that should be hot and more times than not, I don’t eat them anyways.

That being said, I eat a lot of street food.  I’ve been in Panama for 32 years, and, I don’t want to brag, but I’ve been eating food my entire life.  I think these are qualifications enough for me to give a review on local cuisine regardless of where it’s located, or what culture it comes from.

I’ve also noted on the different Facebook Groups that people have either been complaining about expensive food or bad food or just asking about where to buy food in Panama.  Hopefully, this helps to give you, my loyal reader, the opportunity to see what my opinion is on high-end restaurants, as well as some of the stuff we normal humans eat daily when on the road.

LA FISHERIA SEAFOOD

Monday night, on my way to a meeting, I decided to stop and get a quick “anything” to eat from any number of the restaurants in the area surrounding Plaza Herrera in Casco Antiguo.  This is the park located right behind the American Trade Hotel.

I know that this is a seafood-related business, but I just decided to order a quick salad.  I also knew that I’d be eating later at the meeting I was heading to later.  The staff is very nice, very sweet and seem to genuinely aim to please.  However, the salad was BAD.  I ordered a Cesar Salad, knowing that it was probably going to be a basic salad anyways, but it really didn’t meet what I would consider basic standards.  The lettuce used was fine but was doused with a Cesar dressing.  They added a good portion of croutons, meticulously scattered over the plate.  These were probably the HARDEST croutons I’ve ever had on a salad.  I’m confident that you could interchange them with BBs for use with a slingshot for quality hunting of birds and small rodents.  Luckily, my bone structure is solid and I visit my dentist yearly for checkups and the expected upkeep, otherwise I don’t know for sure that I would have gotten through that meal with all of my pearly whites intact.

But the best part came with the bill.  At this point the noise on the street and the disappointment of the salad, was enough for me to want to pay and skedaddle.  The first bill they game me was for $35.00 plus tax for THE CHEFS SALAD.  I clarified to the girl waiting on me that I didn’t order anything called THE CHEFS SALAD and would definitely not pay $35.00 for a subpar, less than basic Cesar Salad.  My actual words were, “$35 is too much for this salad”.  She apologized and assured me that she agreed that the bill was high and would return with the proper bill for the meal, returning with a corrected bill for $20.00.  Yep, still way too much.  Don’t get me wrong, if this were THE Cesar Salad from a high-end restaurant with the correct ingredients using the original recipe of lemon juice, olive oil, egg, Worchestershire sauce, anchovies, garlic, Dijon mustard, Parmesan cheese and black pepper with quality in-house croutons and properly prepared romaine lettuce, then I would gladly pay it.  This, I paid, but not gladly by any means.

Final call?  Friendly staff, bad salad, bullshit price.  Will not return.

WOK TO WALK

First of all, I love this name.  It tells you what they serve and how they serve it in just 3 words.  It’s quick and the prices are not bad at all.  I know that this isn’t authentic Chinese food, but it’s pretty darn good and gets the job done with fresh ingredients cooked right in front of you.  Ok, not exactly cooked, more like “warmed up and joined in harmony”.  Their base ingredients start with your choice of egg noodles, rice, quinoa and other grains that you can choose from.  You can add a myriad of veggies and proteins to include chicken, shrimp, fish or beef.  They even have pineapple for you crazy people out there that add pineapple to everything.  (That’s me.  I’m the crazy guy that adds pineapple to everything.)  They have special combos you can order up, but regardless of what you request, they’ll have your order done within 5 minutes.  Great for those quick lunches and “orders to go” scenarios.  Their prices are around $10.00 on average for whatever you order and includes a soft beverage.  They have restaurants in several of the malls in Panama City and I get mine at the food court in Torres De Las Americas where I work.

Final call?  Efficient staff, quick meals, super price, tasty.  Will probably be back 2-3 times a month.

MICHAEL’S RESTAURANT (Obarrio)

I’ve heard so much about Michael’s Restaurant and really wanted to try this place out since long ago.  When your friends tell you about a place they absolutely loved, you get a bit envious.  Given that I was already going to conduct a series of reviews this week, I decided to try out Michael’s for breakfast.

Truth be told, I contacted Michael Nikolich, the owner and told him I’d be going over for the review.  I suppose that when I do these in the future, I shouldn’t warn anyone in advance, but after arriving, I noted that there really wasn’t much he could really prepare himself for.  The place is immaculate, staff is genuinely pleasant and it’s centrally located with good parking right in front.

I was seated immediately and ordered a coffee.  As I perused the menu, it dawned on me how I consider a restaurant or anything else to be “good”.  Within a minute of being there, I was already thinking “Sayira would love this place.”.  Sayira is my wife, my queen, my occasional pain in the ass, but just the same she’s my everything.  Wanting her to have my same experiences is a good sign that it’s already a good experience.  In fact, if there were a gauge for what I felt it would be a rated a “10” on the “Sayirameter”.

I was torn between getting one of their pancake creations, French Toast Challah, American breakfast or something simpler.  I finally went for the Michael’s Crepes mostly because Crepes are not easy to make and it had his name on them.  The crepes were good and they came with everything it said it would.  A ham and cheese crepe with potatoes on the side.  I shouldn’t be eating that much carbohydrates, and wish I would have tried the Challah instead, but here we are.  I liked it, but I wish I would have ordered something healthier (that’s on me).  I’m not much of a crepes guy actually, but these were not bad at all.  The crepe itself was a little thicker from the crepes I’ve had before, but was told that it was to keep with the consistency of the presentation and I was fine with that.  I will definitely return to feed that fire of desire of ordering the Challah next time.  In tow will be my queen and her faithful subjects Brett Jr and Brandon, which will most certainly cast upon us a hail of pancakes.

The breakfast cost $15.52 plus tip and was well worth it.

Final call?  Great staff, proper food, justified price and makes me wanna go back with the entire family.

FIRST PICTURE OF SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE AT THE HEART OF THE MILKY WAY

Milky Way.

An international team of astronomers announced this Thursday that they managed to capture the image of the supermassive black hole located in the center of the Milky Way, three years after having obtained that of a similar one in the galaxy M87.

The collaboration, a project known as EHT (Event Horizon Telescope) presented, in several simultaneous press conferences, the “silhouette” of the black hole named Saggitarius A* on a luminous disk of matter.

This image is similar to that of the gigantic black hole in the distant galaxy M87, much larger than the Milky Way and that the EHT released in 2019.

Scientists believe this proves that the same principles of physics operate at the heart of two systems of very different size.

Technically a black hole cannot be examined directly, since the object is so dense, and its gravitational pull so powerful, that even light cannot escape its force of attraction. But it is possible to detect the matter that circulates around it, before being engulfed.

Black holes are called stellar when they have a mass equivalent to three times that of the Sun, and they are classified as supermassive when their mass is equivalent to thousands, or even billions of Suns.

Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) was named after being detected in the direction of the constellation Sagittarius. It has a mass of about four million suns and is about 27,000 light years from Earth.

Its existence had been suspected since 1974, when an unusual radio source was detected in the center of the galaxy.

In the 1990s, several astrophysicists confirmed the presence of a supermassive compact object in that place, which earned them a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2020.

The image that has been revealed this Thursday represents the first visual proof of that object.

Hours of observation, years of calculations

The EHT is an international network of eight radio astronomical observatories, including one located in Sierra Nevada (Spain) and another in the Atacama desert (Chile).

In 2019, the team achieved the historical image of the supermassive black hole of M87, equivalent to six billion solar masses and located 55 million light years away.

The Sgr A+ therefore represents a “featherweight” in comparison.

“We have two completely different types of galaxies and two very different masses of black holes, but when you examine their edges, those holes look remarkably similar,” said Sera Markoff, co-chair of the EHT science council, in a statement accompanying the announcement.

“That proves that the (Theory of) general relativity applies” in both cases, she added.

The image presented is the result of several hours of observation carried out essentially in 2017, and after five years of calculations and simulations carried out by more than 300 researchers from 80 institutes.

The image is much more difficult to obtain than that of M87* because the black hole at the center of the Milky Way is much smaller and because there are clouds of dust and gases that extend over thousands of light-years and obscure it.

The gas that surrounds it only needs twelve minutes to go around this galactic object, at almost the speed of light, while in the case of M87* it takes two weeks.

That means the luminosity and configuration of the gas changed very rapidly during the observation.

“It’s like you want to take a sharp picture of a dog that wants to catch his tail,” said Chi-Kwan Chan, a scientist at the EHT.

The two images that scientists now have, and their comparison, will allow the detailed study of the behavior of matter in extreme conditions, with plasma at “billions of degrees, powerful magnetic currents and matter that circulates at a speed close to light Professor Heino Falcke, former head of the EHT scientific council that produced the image of M87*, explained to AFP.

Such harsh conditions will make it possible to explore phenomena such as the deformations of space-time near a supermassive object, predicted in the general theory of relativity that Albert Einstein formulated in 1915.

CARRIERS PROTEST AND CLOSE ROADS IN THE CAPITAL, THERE WERE SEVERAL ARRESTS

Transporters from various parts of the country went out to protest this Thursday, May 12, against the rise in fuel, demanding its freezing and an increase in the transport rate.

Pedregal, San Miguelito and Arraiján were some of the points hindered by carriers.

The director of Traffic and Land Transportation, Carlos Ordoñez, referred to the demonstrations taking place in the country, this Thursday, due to the rise in fuel prices.

Ordoñez recalled that this Wednesday a dialogue table was held where representatives of the entire transport sector participated, where specific proposals were presented regarding the issue of freezing and raising the rate.

According to the official, the proposal for the 8 million dollars of subsidy was presented to the Cabinet Council and was approved, and the extension until June of the remaining 3 million, which remained to be used, was also approved.

“We have a table again this Tuesday to present a counterproposal to the freezing of prices by the government, while the issue of tariffs is established by law and they have to comply and we as officials enforce it,” he said.

He stated that this proposal is aimed specifically at user carriers. Since cargo carriers are sitting at another table.

Ordoñez stressed that there is no justification for the protests that are taking place.

In the midst of the protests, carriers were arrested.

MORE THAN $10 THOUSAND IN PRODUCTS WITHOUT SANITARY REGISTRY SEIZED IN PANAMA PACIFIC

Alert for products without health records.

More than 10,000 dollars in products without sanitary registration was seized by the Metropolitan Health Region in the Panama Pacific area.

The commercial premises maintained a variety of cheeses, whey, tortillas, empanadas, nuggets, sausages and tequeños without sanitary registration, which constitutes a serious fault since it cannot guarantee its health, indicated the metropolitan director of Health, Israel Cedeño.

The health personnel proceeded to destroy the products and the legal representative of the offending premises will be summoned to the Metropolitan Health Region where they will be sanctioned in accordance with the provisions of the law.

Cedeño urged consumers to demand cleanliness from restaurants and the products to be fit for consumption.

Likewise, he reiterated to the merchants to guarantee that their suppliers sell products suitable for consumption and comply with all sanitary regulations to avoid sanctions and seizures by the Health authority.

“Selling products for human consumption that you cannot guarantee their healthiness is a serious offense, an attempt against public health,” said Cedeño.

The operation to verify compliance with sanitary regulations was carried out on Friday night in the Panama Pacific special area belonging to the Veracruz sanitary area.

Health personnel inspected premises such as restaurants, supermarkets, stores, among others.

In addition to sanctions for non-compliance with health standards, the Metropolitan Health Region applies guidance mechanisms to merchants to ensure compliance with the standards.

THE MISSING PERSONS OF CHIRIQUÍ

Three indigenous people in the province of Chiriquí disappeared in less than three months without leaving a trace. These disappeared are added to two more, which has not been known for several years. The same suspect is in the sights of the authorities.

At least in the city of David people are alarmed. The news about missing girls in the province of Chiriquí has mothers in fear.

Street versions speak of several missing women in Chiriquí, but the Public Ministry assures that officially there are three:

• Anabel Valdivia Serrano, a 28-year-old university student, was last seen on August 8, 2021.

• Astrid Tugrí, 21 years old, disappeared in October of that same year.

• And the student Viviana Gallardo, 17, has not been seen since November 9, 2021.

The three are indigenous from the Ngäbe Buglé region and disappeared in the middle of a job interview.

For these days the family of Astrid Tugrí recent much more the disappearance of her, they would be celebrating her 22 years.

A young woman, mother of two little ones, who had a job, but who received an offer for one that was supposed to be better, in a restaurant bar.

The investigations

Although the complaint was reported a week later, the relatives complain about the alleged inaction of the authorities, including the Tolé Personería and the Public Ministry, with a first prosecutor.

In the Homicide and Femicide section of Chiriquí, Hernán Mora is the prosecutor in charge of these disappearances.

Although for now they are handled as deprivation of liberty and robbery, all cases are in the Homicide Prosecutor’s Office considering the time of disappearance.

They all revolve around the same suspect, who is in custody and already has an indictment.

One of the hearings will be on May 12 for the case of Anabel Valdivia, who disappeared in August. The other will be on May 20 by Astrid Tugrí.

Regarding the third missing person, Viviana Gallardo, 17, an extension of time will be requested to investigate.

But it is assured, there are already binding elements such as witnesses, articles of the victims in possession of the suspect and videos, among others.

the suspect

For now, the only suspect and defendant is José Alberto Atencio Serrano, 47 years old.

He is described as a man with a way with words, persistent, tall, stocky and good-looking, but without resources, to the point that he lived in a big house, but in exchange for cleaning, he cut grass or worked as a peddler to earn a living.

Last Friday the Institute of Forensic Medicine performed tests on him to get his psychiatric profile. Suspicion about the defendant grows because recently human remains were found very close to where he lived.

At the site we learned that there are 11 wells and that one is of particular interest for the investigations. Samples have already been taken from the relatives of the disappeared. For now, it is only known that the skeleton corresponds to a young person, but not if it is a man or a woman.

TVN Noticias learned that José Alberto Atencio Serrano has a criminal record. In 2012 he served a 50-month sentence for raping a woman, to whom, according to the complaint, he gave her an electric current, but she escaped from it and accused him.

But in addition to that, in Alanje, in Chiriquí, there is the family of Verónica Arcia, who disappeared at the age of 33, in 2012, when she went to a job interview.

Before being sentenced, José Alberto Atencio Serrano was also mentioned in this case, but he was dismissed and now the possibility of reopening the file is being analyzed.

With the disappearance of Viviana Gallardo, last November, the search for the detainee today was activated, after locating a garment of the latter.

It is intriguing that after fleeing, the suspect showed up to get his police record and when he gave his name, the alert came out and he was arrested.

However, last Thursday a new missing person emerged, Lorena Montezuma. Upon arriving at the stage with the anthropologist, her father said that she was last seen in Alanje, in 2018, when she was 14 years old.

This man says that he met José Alberto Atencio Serrano in 2020 and that he became his friend. They were neighbors and her cousin was for a time the sentimental partner of the current detainee.

Judicial authority

TVN Noticias went to the Judicial Branch of David, to the Public Defense office in search of the legal aid attorney for José Alberto Atencio Serrano.

On two occasions we were informed that he was in a diligence and despite the fact that we left how to locate us, the call was not returned.

The possibility of other crimes was not ruled out, including human trafficking or that someone else is acted upon, it will be the justice that determines the guilt or innocence of the accused until today.

REGULATION OF DISPOSAL OF SINGLE-USE PLASTICS

Single-use plastics will be phased out.

As of the month of November, the regulations of Law 187, of December 2, 2020, will begin to apply.

Said regulation establishes the criteria to guarantee the reduction and progressive replacement of single-use plastics, in accordance with Executive Decree 9 of May 6, 2022, promulgated in the Official Gazette.

The same, in addition to adding new definitions, specifies the functions, duties and responsibilities of various State entities, once this regularization enters into force.

To meet the objectives of said law, the Ministry of the Environment (MiAmbiente) must prepare the National Strategic Plan for the Reduction of Single-use Plastic, updateable every 6 years, where it will communicate to the public the measures implemented by public entities. and private, progress, results and recommendations.

The Customs Authority will be in charge of restricting, verifying and assigning the personnel and resources necessary to reduce the entry of plastic products into the country, thereby generating an updated statistical report for the Environmental Performance Verification Directorate of MiAmbiente, on said decline and entry of sustainable alternatives.

For which, traders, distributors and importers must apply to the General Directorate of Standards and Industrial Technology (DGNTI) of the Ministry of Commerce and Industries (Mici) for a certification of conformity, before importing the products.

The Mici will make a list, accessible to the public, of all items approved as sustainable replacement alternatives for single-use plastics that already have the certificate of conformity and recognition.

The sanctions for those who fail to comply with these provisions are the responsibility of the Authority for Consumer Protection and Defense of Competition (Acodeco).

The first time a written warning will be imposed and if the infraction persists, a fine ranging between 250 and 2,000 dollars, depending on the number of workers and specification of the premises (chain or distributor).

It should be noted that any exception to this law, for reasons of public health, must be regulated by the Ministry of Health, through a Resolution published in the Official Gazette.

CHARGES FOR CRIME AGAINST DOMESTIC ANIMALS SUBJECT IN CHIRIQUÍ WHO BURNED A CAT

The subject was apprehended on May 9, after a raid in the Las Lomas sector in Alanje.

The Public Ministry of Panama reported this afternoon that the Early Decision and Litigation Section of the Chiriquí Prosecutor’s Office managed to charge a 21-year-old man with charges for the alleged commission of the crime against domestic animals.

This fact was recorded through an amateur video on May 8, 2022 in the Alanje district, when the accused showed the kitten after having killed it and burned the animal’s body.

It was also reported that for this fact the subject received a precautionary measure prohibiting him from leaving the province, issued by the Judge of Guarantees.

Leaving the premises of the Judicial Branch in Chiriquí, the young man assured Telemetro Reporta: “I regret what I have done, although in truth I did not kill him and I feel very sorry. Excuse me.”

The fact, the video of which was leaked on social networks, generated various criticisms against the young man for the cruelty shown towards animals.

According to 421 of the Penal Code, it is established that whoever, through acts of cruelty, causes death or seriously injures a domestic animal will be punished with a prison sentence of 2 to 4 years, or its equivalent in days-fine or late-term arrest. of week.

THEY CRITICIZE THE WAY IN WHICH POLICE REPORTS ARE USED IN PANAMA

These reports are used by prosecutors to open investigations against certain people.

The police reports used as evidence to arrest people in some criminal proceedings have been harshly questioned.

Lawyers have been criticizing how these police reports, which come from supposedly anonymous sources, have served to decree arrests in some judicial processes in the country.

Based on these reports, the arrest of some people was even ordered, who later turned out to have had nothing to do with the processes being investigated by the Public Ministry (MP).

One of these cases was that of the young Miguel Ángel Almanza, who, as a result of two police reports from allegedly anonymous sources, was arrested for the investigation of the murder of seven young people in the “Bunker” of Colón.

Almanza was saved from paying up to 50 years in prison for this case, thanks to the suspicion of some lawyers who suspected that he had nothing to do with those murders.

Recently, the lawyer Manuel Calvo, defender of Nicel Solano, an official of the Judicial Branch who was separated from her charge for allegedly leaking confidential information, denounced that her client is detained due to a police report.

“The official’s link to this process is due to some police reports that say that she was allegedly leaking information about raids, telephone interventions and judges’ shifts in certain hearings,” said the jurist.’

Alfonso Fraguela, former vice president of the National Bar Association (CNA), indicated that it is his opinion that police reports must be supported “by truthful sources that support such or such versions” that serve as the basis for initiating a legal process.

He added that the absence of someone determined to ratify the details would leave it uncertain whether that was true or not.

Inhabitants and emergency bodies flock to the area after an explosion at Hotel Saratoga, in the Cuban capital.

This is a list of the number of cases per day since the first case was discovered in Panama

END NOTES:

Friends and I recently got together for a great fishing expedition to Pedasi, the team of 8 dudes caught nearly 60 Mahi-Mahi in three days.  The filets were distributed amongst the group, some were gifts to the locals, some eaten during our trip.  After leaving with our bounty, returning to our homes around the world, some of the guys started asking for specific recipes.  Having tried Panama’s unique tasting ceviche, one of the guys asked for me recipe, so I let him have it.  Here it is as explained on our shared chat group, verbatim:

BRETT’S CHEEKY CEVICHE RECIPE

Step 1 – chop 2 large red onions finely.

Step 2 – chop 1 scotch bonnet finely

Step 3 – chop a spring of parsley finely

Step 4 – mix veggies together with your hands and add salt

Step 5 – scratch your testicles for good luck – or scatch your husband’s testicles if this be the case.

Step 6 – cut the fish into 1/2 inch cubes and incorporate into the veggies

Step 7 – remember suddenly that you forgot to by limes – go to the store – get limes – return as you wonder why you or your hubby can’t stop squirming.

Step 8 – start squeezing the f&%$ out of them limes

Step 9 – rub your eyes.

Step 10 – pour lime juice over the fish/veggie mix until completely covered.  There’s no such thing as too much lime juice.

Step 11 – Refrigerate for 4-5 hours and enjoy. Blind and neutered.
