When I was little, my step-dad used to play guitar to us and it was amazing. He was a good guy with a beautiful soul who made stupid mistakes… … very stupid mistakes. The short version of THAT story is that he was taken away from us for one of those stupid mistakes. But, thanks to him, my love for music began. Another good buddy, Tom Richards and his father, played guitar. They were more blues and ZZ Top, where my step-dad was more country and folk songs, but music is music. Not having the money to get me any instruments, I would instead watch mesmerized as my friends would play their instruments. Tom on the guitar, Joe on the drums and me as part of their faithful audience.

I became an adult at some point and immediately after, a father. My life was seemingly always consumed with oodles of work to ensure my family was happy and fed well enough, but if I couldn’t live my dream of playing an instrument, I would perhaps live vicariously through my own children. So, we forced them all to learn an instrument. My first daughter, Kimberly, wanted to play guitar at a young age. I was elated and eagerly reached for my shoes so I could march my ass down to the music store and get her what she wanted. “No way, not a chance.”, her mother quickly interjected. “If you’re going to learn anything, it’s going to be the piano!” … To avoid world war 58 (as we’d already been through all the previous WWs in that relationship), Kimberly was set up with Piano Lessons at a well-known music school for after-school practice. Low and behold, three months later, Kimberly arrived to the house with a guitar in her hands. Seeing her come up the walkway, I quickly answered the door and asked, “What’s with the guitar?”. “Don’t tell mom, but I’ve actually been learning to play guitar and not piano.”, she nervously answered. Well, we had to tell mom because mom was about to buy a piano for her. Imagine the awkwardness! Kimberly went on to learn the guitar and to this day, plays very well.

After World War 128, we divorced and I eventually remarried to the beautiful soul that you all know as “Queen Sayira”. We had two young boys, Brett and Brandon. They learned the piano years ago and last year I asked if they would like to learn any other instruments. They both told me that they wanted to know how to play the drums, so Santa Clause got them a drum set for Christmas 2021. Funny enough, Brett wasn’t happy AT ALL about it. “I said that I’d like to know how to play drums, but I don’t want to have to sit and learn how to do it!!”, he clarified. This year I asked them both if they wanted to learn any other instruments and Brett Jr was quick to say, “NOPE!”. But Brandon spoke up and asked, “Why don’t you learn to play an instrument, dad?”. Holy crap, he’s right! Why don’t I? There was no good reason AT ALL for me not doing it. Life has been good to us and I could afford an acoustic guitar and could probably pick up lessons from youtube.

So, this week I bought myself my first ever guitar!!! Although my first choices would have been Yamaha or Fender, the salesman convinced me to get an Epiphone guitar. Another friend told me to get metal strings and although the salesperson was reluctant, he finally agreed although said that the plastic strings were better for a beginner. “Yes, sir, but I already enjoy torturing myself in so many other ways, why not with a guitar?”, I reassured him. On my way home with it, I was listening to my 80s music and “Maná” came on, “El Muelle de San Blas”, to be precise. It has such a great melody and a guitar rhythm that’s seemingly easy to manage, that I’ve made it my goal to learn that song. With just a few days into this, I can now strum and change up between “E Major” and “A Major”, which is a far cry from my goal, but it’s a million times more than what I could do last week. Sometime next year I’ll be performing live at SMILEY’S in Pedasi, right John?? You’re all invited!

PUBLIC MINISTRY INITIATES PROCEEDINGS WITH EXPERTS IN THE URBAN BUILDING

OFFICIAL FUEL PRICES IN PANAMA WILL DROP FROM FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4

Vehicle owners who do not apply for or apply for the subsidized fuel price must pay the official prices.

PANAMA HAS DETECTED 18 CASES OF MONKEYPOX

Panama registers 18 detected cases of monkeypox, according to figures handled by the Ministry of Health until yesterday, Tuesday, November 1.

This was reported by the head of the Health portfolio, Luis Francisco Sucre, who explained that there are nine active cases of this disease.

Sucre also said that the decision was made to start vaccinating against monkeypox in the country, for which, he recalled, 1,500 vaccines are available. These doses arrived in Panama on October 17.

He explained that between an inter-institutional team and infectologists, vaccination was recommended for people who have been exposed to others infected, as well as medical and health personnel who have not complied with biosecurity measures and are at risk.

Sucre urged the population to maintain sanity and self-care during these national holidays and during carnival time.

Monkeypox is a viral infection in which a person develops fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and a rash that may include the entire body.

PANAMA PERFORMS FIRST MITRAL VALVE REPLACEMENT SURGERIES

These surgeries were performed before a patient who had heart surgery 12 years ago had her mitral valve replaced.

For the first time in the country and at the level of Central America and the Caribbean, medical specialists from the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Institute (ICT), in the City of Health, performed the procedures of transcatheter mitral valve replacements, in a public health institution.

Pedro Echeverría, cardiovascular surgeon of this highly complex center, stressed that these surgeries are part of the Program of Medicine and Structural Surgery of the Heart that is carried out in the ICT, for those patients who are not candidates for conventional cardiac surgery.

He also stressed that they are new generation valves that are implanted in the mitral position. “It is one of the 4 valves of the heart, if it is damaged it causes very severe problems and rapid deterioration of this organ, so it is important to replace it when the patient begins to have problems with it.”

According to the cardiologist, the procedure is done with a small incision in the groin, with ultrasound it is possible to puncture the femoral vein, and through it it is advanced with a system the thickness of a pencil, it reaches the heart, and then passes from one cavity to another; Through the catheter, the mitral valve is crossed and the new one is implanted.

“With this type of procedure the patient’s chest is not opened, he does not have pain or discomfort,” said Echeverría and clarified that these surgeries cannot be performed on all patients, since a series of measures and sizes must be taken to determine if the implantation of a new valve does not hinder the functioning of the heart.

As background, he explained that these surgeries were performed before a patient who had undergone heart surgery 12 years ago had her mitral valve replaced, but due to a cerebrovascular event, she was considered at moderate to severe risk of complication if open heart surgery was performed.

Another case was a woman who suffered from breast cancer and whose mitral valve was implanted 14 years ago and needs to be replaced.

MINSA ON ALERT FOR VOLUNTARY RECALL OF BATCH OF DRY SHAMPOOS IN THE US

The recalled products were distributed in the United States.

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) of Panama reported that it is monitoring the voluntary withdrawal, by the company Unilever US, of batches of dry shampoos selected in the United States, due to the possible presence of benzene.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in a publication, referenced the voluntary recall of selected batches of dry shampoo aerosol products produced prior to October 2021 from Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head) and TRESemmé due to potentially elevated benzene levels.

The company explained that, based on an independent health hazard assessment, daily exposure to benzene in recalled products at the levels detected in the tests would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences, however, they are being recalled as a precaution.

The recalled products were distributed in the United States, and retailers were notified to remove them from shelves, Minsa said.

The Minsa explained that voluntary withdrawal is a precautionary practice carried out by companies to mitigate possible health risks, with the use of their products, even if they are potential.

THREE POLICE LIEUTENANTS APPREHENDED IN OPERATION AGAINST DRUG TRAFFICKING

Three members of the National Police were arrested on the morning of this Thursday, October 27, in the so-called “Operation Foráneo” against a criminal network in the province of Colón.

The Minister of Public Security, Juan Pino, explained that these are three lieutenants who are allegedly linked to a group of drug traffickers.

“They are troop officers, they were finishing their career,” he said.

“They crossed the line and now they will have to face justice, because it was a judicialized operation. It’s a disgrace to the uniform,” Pino added.

This advisory board aims to address issues such as emerging hemispheric risks and development opportunities through the partnership between Latin America, the United States and Europe, identifying common strategic values and interests, such as the transatlantic geographical link.

Through her social networks, Mouynes was pleased with the invitation she received to join this important organization that has the support of North American and European authorities.

“My incorporation into the analysis group coincides with that of other new advisors, such as Juan Luis Moreno, former president of the Inter-American Development Bank and Moises Naim, of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace,” Mouynes said.

PANAMA ACHIEVES 97% OF ELECTRICITY GENERATION FROM CLEAN SOURCES

The National Energy Secretariat also reported that the installed capacity for renewable energy reaches 3,926 MW.

The National Secretariat of Energy of Panama (SNE) reported that as part of the progress of the National Energy Transition, last September Panama reached a new record of 97% of electricity generation through clean sources, according to recent indicators from the National Authority of Public Services (ASEP).

According to this entity, the data indicate that clean energy came from 91.09% of hydraulic sources (water), 5.82% was generated by photovoltaic and wind (sun and wind), which add up to 97%; while only 3.09% corresponds to other sources.

It should be remembered that Panama was internationally recognized as the eighth country generating clean energy, after last July the record of 95% of clean energy was reached in the national matrix, that is, from renewable sources. In addition to this, the installed capacity for renewable energy reaches 3,926 MW.

The SNE points out that it continues to promote substantial climate actions, aimed at developing the strategies of the Energy Transition Agenda: achieving Universal Access to Energy and Reducing Energy Poverty in the country; progressively achieve Electric Mobility in both the public and private sectors; establish the Rational and Efficient Use of Energy, which includes the reduction of electricity consumption and fuel consumption, among others; increase Distributed Generation and the development of Innovation in the National Interconnection System.

He also adds that during this month of November, the SNE plans a series of respective activities to continue its strategies.

Next November 11 will be the closing of the Training in Installation and Maintenance of Photovoltaic Systems in which 25 women from the Ngäbe Buglé Region participate, who will bring “light” to their homes and communities. ARTISANS DENOUNCE THE INDUSTRIALIZATION OF THE POLLERA AND OTHER PANAMANIAN PRODUCTS

The representative of Sinap denounced that there are businesses in Panama that are selling pieces such as “typical clothing” for these national holidays.
