How (not) to go fishing; ¿Panama is Experiencing a Transition from Rainy to Dry Season; Panama Accumulates More Than 7,000 Cases of Dengue and More Than 5,000 of Malaria; The ‘City of Health’will open several buildings next week.

We’ve been trying to go fishing to Gamboa for quite some time now.  We have a small lake boat and it’s nice to get out and putz around in it for a few hours even if just to keep the motor in tiptop condition.  A few months ago, after selling my XTrail, AKA “The Boat Hauler”, we had to get another hitch put on my wife’s SUV.  Well, last month we finally got that done and everything was seemingly ready for us to go out on another Mikkelson Fishing Expedition!  Last Saturday, we prepped gear with new line, selected lures, made a meal and snacks plan, ensured our clothes were laid out and batteries were charged.  We also prepped all other standard take-along items like sun block, net, oar, scale, headgear, gloves, face masks, etc.  Later that evening I nearly forgot to check if we had enough fuel – we did NOT.  So, I ran out to fill one of the tanks and to get a few pints of boat motor oil.

Now we were set… …or so I thought.  The one thing that I didn’t even think to check was the hitch itself.  Our boat trailer is setup with a 1 7/8 “ hitch, but the ball that the installers put on my wife’s SUV was 2”.  Even though I noticed this the night before, there was nowhere we were going to one before 5AM the following day.  That’s right, no 24-hour Walmart in Panama.

The following day we went to our trusty, rusty Discovery Center and picked up the 1 7/8” ball early in the morning.  Amazing to think that a $5.60 item held us back from fishing.  The boys were distraught, but my accommodating queen suggested that we go fishing on Mother’s Day!  Wow, that’s awesome.  We were all pretty happy and ready to head out on Panama’s Mother’s Day celebration, December 8th.  However…. Seemingly plagued by bad luck, Wednesday night we find out that my youngest boy Brandon had a major homework assignment due for Friday.  And by major, I mean, he had to read the entire Romeo and Juliet novel in just a day.  Sure, he knew all year long, but taking on my legacy, he too is a master procrastinator.  And, being that it was Mother’s Day, we couldn’t just leave him home alone and there was no way in hell, I was going to get away with leaving out for fishing by myself either.

So, we have our sights set for Sunday.  Come hell or highwater, we’re fishing… …have a great weekend!

INFORMAL SECTOR HAS BOOSTED THE COUNTRY’S ECONOMY IN 2022

The informal sector of the economy has been the one that has been driving the economic growth that Panama has had post-pandemic and at the end of this 2022, at least this was considered by the economist, Luis Morán.

Morán said in the program Mesa de Periodistas, by TVN Radio, that the sectors that have been lagging behind in this economic growth have been agribusiness, industry and agro-export; another sector that has not yet recovered its levels is construction as well as those related to services such as hotels and restaurants.

Regarding the generation of jobs, the economist pointed out that the role of the State is important to identify those needs and qualities that workers need to insert themselves into the economy.

“This is important because after the pandemic, no labor insertion program has been created, that is, to facilitate young people to enter the labor market, nor has a reintegration program been created,” he said.

On the other hand, Morán said, there is a drop in wages  that is relevant, because when this effect exists, there is also a drop in the purchasing power of the population that prevents them from accessing goods and services.

In addition, he acknowledged that, at the level of average prices, Panama so far this year has an inflation rate of 3.3%, which, when compared internationally, countries such as Argentina and Turkey, which lead this aspect are surprised by this low inflation rate, but, when entering the data they find that food has not fallen in price and measures to level this,  They haven’t worked.

Meanwhile, infrastructure investment spending recently reflected in a report by the risk rating agency Moody’s, that infrastructure investment spending in Panama has decreased considerably and despite the degree of investment that is maintained, is deteriorating its public finances and is taking steps to expenses of greater dependence, such as subsidies.

PANAMA IS EXPERIENCING TRANSITION FROM RAINY TO DRY SEASON

The call is reiterated to take all precautionary measures when visiting beaches, rivers, spas.

The deputy director of the Emergency Operations Center of the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc), José Marrone, indicated that at this moment Panama is experiencing a transition from  the rainy season  to the dry season.

He explained that rains could be recorded until the end of December or even at the beginning of January 2023.

Faced with this, Sinaproc maintains surveillance together with the Empresa de Transmisión Eléctrica S.A. (Etesa) to know the detailed reports on the conditions that could be presented.

“We have all the active bases, before any emergency call we are ready and to have a timely response … We can present the presence of intermittent rains, also floods of rivers and strong waves, we are still in that transition from rainy season to dry and that does not exempt that there can not be some type of rains and rivers or streams increased, “he said.

He also reiterated to people the call to take all precautionary measures when visiting beaches, rivers, spas, or when carrying out sports and recreational activities.

APEDE ASKS THE GOVERNMENT FOR IMMEDIATE ACTIONS TO IMPROVE INFRASTRUCTURE IN PORT AND CRUISE TERMINALS

The fact that companies of international prestige, leaders in this tourism segment, have chosen Panama as their “Home Port”, is great news for the country, said Apede.

The Panamanian Association of Business Executives (Apede) called on the Government to take action to improve infrastructure in port terminals, and cruise ships, after complaints about the lack of some adjustments.

“We are an Association that has promoted and requested the government the necessary actions for an economic reactivation, so we remind all institutions, public and private, related to the operations of port terminals, and cruise ships in particular, their commitment to the country to execute immediate actions to improve the infrastructures and processes necessary for the attention of ships, crew and passengers in an efficient, timely, safe and comfortable manner,” Apede said.

It points out that if the operations in the ports are not handled efficiently, under criteria and standards of world quality, the permanence of these operations in Panama is put at risk, which wastes the important investments made, causing job losses and seriously affecting the image of the country as a tourist destination.

“The tourism sector contributed 13% to GDP in 2019 and with the economic injection that the operation of cruise lines would be leaving to the country, that percentage should increase; So we must safeguard our image as a tourist destination, as well as the sustainability and success of this important activity, “he says.

It is worth mentioning that the administrator of the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP), Iván Eskildsen, said that they are working to improve the experience of tourists who arrive in the country on cruise ships and achieve the funds required to conclude the cruise terminal project, this following a pronouncement of the Maritime Chamber of Panama that showed its concern about the complaints filed by users of the international industry of cruises, on the operational capacity of Panama to receive cruise tourism, specifically for affectations related to migratory processes, security in embarkation and disembarkation of passengers, procedures and administrative costs.

The application for the license to the company Starlink, approved by the National Authority of Public Services, allows Elon Musk’s company to start operating in Panama.

The Republic of Panama approved the license application to the company Space Exploration Technologies Corp. through its Starlink system, which will allow it to start operations in the country.

“The application for the license to the company Starlink, approved by the National Authority of Public Services, allows Elon Musk’s company to start operating in Panama, which brings closer the execution of the satellite Internet connectivity project in schools in areas of difficult access,” said the National Authority for Government Innovation (AIG).

COMPANY IN CHARGE OF CHRISTMAS LIGHTING SAYS IT HAS “CORRECTED” TECHNICAL FAILURES AND DENOUNCES VANDALISM

View of an area of Christmas lighting 2022.

The company in charge of Christmas lighting acknowledged that there were technical failures and explained how they are correcting them.

He mentioned that there were technical problems, the rain damaged several connections, the electrical transmitters failed and vandalism had an impact. However, they indicate that 95% of all the adjustments that should be made are already ready. He confirmed that today it should be 100%, after fixing the path of lights installed in the Cinta Costera.

They also explained that, “to try to satisfy more the need for decoration, to make it look more attractive, they have begun to design and organize, and put other types of elements in the avenues.”

This clarification arises after complaints about the poor condition of many of the elements used for lighting. In addition, the intermittency of the lights, which some turn on and others do not; and the lack of more decorative elements as in previous years versus the cost of the project that exceeds 2 million dollars.

This is the company Passwords, which according to the owner Ricky Ramírez, have more than 22 years of experience in this type of events, however, recognizes that being a project of great magnitude “there were details that can be improved”.

First he clarified that “all the materials installed are new, and they are brought from Colombia.”

He indicated that the luminaire of other years was totally white, while this year’s are multicolored, and although it has the same power and voltage, they illuminate less.

Regarding the ornaments that are deteriorated, he said that “perhaps it is because they are not the design of past assemblies.” “When you see them on it’s different. If you take a picture of a daytime lighting project, it won’t be right, it will look worn,” Ramirez added.

“Many times we get into projects with the intention that they come out in excellence but there are drawbacks in the way that must be solved and that is what we are … There are 33 lighting sites and each of them has a different design, so once the client sees it and approves it, based on what is approved, the work is done, “he concluded.

This is a list of the number of cases per day since the first case was discovered in Panama

END NOTES:

Fishing is definitely my number one hobby, even if I haven’t been able to go out in a long time.  Taking my boys out is what makes it the best.  It almost isn’t even about catching fish although that certainly makes the day that much better.

Here are a few quotes from a few renown fishermen and several unknowns as well.

1. “Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after,” Henry David Thoreau.

2. “If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there’d be a shortage of fishing poles,” Doug Larson.

3. “Fishing is much more than fish. It is the great occasion when we may return to the fine simplicity of our forefathers,” Herbert Hoover.

4. “A bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at the office!” Author Unknown.

5. “A woman, who has never seen her husband fishing, doesn’t know what a patient man she married!” Author Unknown.
