Growing up in a small midwestern town in the middle of nowhere, our townsfolk were quite set in their ways.  We were used to extremely cold winters, hard manual labor year ’round, strong Christian beliefs and a firm handshake.  Women were women, men were men and the cows ran scared.  Just the same, everyone was welcome from anywhere and everyone was greeted as if they’d known you forever.  You’d get waved at from half a block away, from across the street, by someone you didn’t even know all that well.  Walking down the streets of Antigo meant, keeping your head up and your eyes wide for anyone who would wish you well, otherwise when you got home, your mom would ask, “Why didn’t you wave back to Mr Klessig when he saw you?”… …true story.

Any beliefs from the exterior were frown upon however especially with our LCMS-heavy community (that’s The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod).  It was a pretty solid, conservative way of life and there wasn’t anything wrong with that at all.  By December 1, there was always at least a light powder of snow on the ground and sometimes the snowmobiles were already taken out of paid storage, a shed or out of your grandpa’s barn, plowing unofficial trails until the country could get around to doing it properly.  But most certainly, “Merry Christmas” rolled off the lips of everyone to go along with that courteous wave from half a block, without hesitation.  It was Christmas time and no one from this beautiful, comfortable bubble knew otherwise.

Getting out to the world, a world of wonder and sometimes confusion, I slowly learned of other cultures.  Even with some mental reservation, I was still fascinated first by Hanukkah, the Jewish holiday commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem and subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean Revolt against  Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE.  (Yes, I just had to look that up to make sure I got it right.)  Latching on to dear life to my own beliefs, I thought, “Huh, I wonder why the Jews decided to celebrate their holiday around Christmas as well?”.  Followed quickly by, “And what’s up with their new year’s being in the middle of the year?”  Ignorance ran rampant in my “waving-from-half-a-block-away” manner of thought. Not too long after, my travels brought me through a good many states, some which were not conservative AT ALL as well as a good jaunt through Latin America and eventually, around the world.  These new cultures opened my eyes to so much wonder and beauty.  The love that different groups placed on their own beliefs at all times of the year, grew on me to a certain extent.  I realized that, without losing my own heritage, I could still appreciate and enjoy the celebrations of others even if it didn’t give me an vacation days.

Some of my favorite non-Christmas celebrations that I’ve come to love include Chinese New Year’s; it’s so beautiful and I love surprising our Chinese neighbors by giving them a pair of mandarin oranges out of the blue.  I LOVE Diwali which symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.  (Ironic, given the theme of this intro.)  It is a post-harvest festival celebrating the bounty following the arrival of the monsoon in the subcontinent.  I’m still confused with Boxing Day however, after thinking for so many years that it had something to do with a professional sport.

Recently, my hometown school, sent out a greeting from their Facebook page saying, “Happy Kwanzaa to all who celebrate!  We hope the festivity and community of the next seven days last the whole year long!  #AntigoPride”  What a nice message from the Unified School District of Antigo.  But the ensuing messages were immediately embarrassing for me to read.  One said: “..and of course, Happy Festivus, while you’re at it.” Another (which I commented on) wrote “Why are public schools continuing to get more and more dumb?”.  I had to dive in.  “What’s so dumb about this?”, I asked him (someone I grew up with actually).  Without getting into the “tit for tat”, he responded with that typical closed-mindedness “check the history behind it, it’s dumb” and “who is Kwanzaa celebrating?”.

We could find a considerable amount of “dumb” in any religious or cultural celebration that we don’t follow or don’t understand.  Quite frankly, we could find quite a bit of dumb in how most people celebrate Christmas.  I suppose an outsider would state, “So, let me get this straight.  You chop it down very much alive, drag it into your house WHOLE during one of the coldest months of the year and you don’t use it to keep warm.  Instead you electrify it and place decorated offerings beneath it?”.  Responding we’d say, very sincerely, “Yeah, but we do give it water until the season’s over and then we burn it outside, throw it in the trash or dump in off somewhere in the country for it to slowly rot.”. with an oh-so-proud smile.  Then they’d ask about the fat man in the red suit, flying reindeer, etc…  don’t get me started.

Although Kwanzaa is relatively new in comparison to so many other celebrations, there’s nothing dumb about it at all.  Maulana Karenga created Kwanzaa in 1966 after the Watts riots (you’ll have to look that up).  Its purpose was to be an African-American holiday, specifically as a goal to give blacks an opportunity to celebrate themselves and their own history.  Karenga wisely stated, “You have to have a cultural revolution before any violent revolution.  Culture gives identity, purpose and direction”.  Given way to inclusion for Christian believers, he stated in his 1997 book Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family, Community, and Culture that “Kwanzaa was not created to give people an alternative to their own religion or religious holiday.”  Many African Americans who celebrate Kwanzaa do so in addition to observing Christmas; this computes to nearly 2 million people in the USA.

It truly is the most wonderful time of the year, for many more reasons than just Christmas.  Those calling other celebrations “dumb”, stop being so grumpy and dismal. Look to the beauty of the seasons.  And at least take advantage of the food that comes along with it.

See you all next year!!

THIS IS HOW NEW YEAR IS CELEBRATED AROUND THE WORLD

Although many people are preparing to celebrate the beginning of their New Year in early January, other cultures and countries mark the beginning of a new year in completely different months.

The celebration of the New Year is a millennial tradition around the world: food, fireworks and reflection with friends and family are common elements, but ultimately this varies according to different calendars, religions and cultures. While the Gregorian calendar (introduced by Western Christianity) has been the protagonist in the Western world, the lunar and solar calendars are also recognized in some celebrations, marking a time to take stock of the past year and welcome the coming year with gratitude and goodwill. Here are some of the ways to celebrate the New Year around the world for 2023 (as well as the Gregorian calendar).

Gregorian New Year

January 1

New Year’s Day marks the first day of the Gregorian calendar, something we are quite familiar with around the world. While March 25 (named after the Roman god of War) was the day on which the New Year was traditionally celebrated, in Roman times it was moved to January, derived from the Latin word iānuārius which referred to the god Janus, deity of the Beginning of all things. The New Year begins with Christianity and has spread throughout the world, and in many parts of the world they have adopted the Gregorian calendar. Although it is usual to make resolutions for new beginnings, in recent years New Year’s Eve (night of December 31) has gained greater prominence with fireworks and parties of friends and family to receive the New Year. Times Square, in New York (United States), is a very popular place for people who travel for the occasion, with more than a million people who come to see the fall of the ball. In Spain, they have  the tradition of taking 12 grapes just before the start of the new year.

Lunar New Year

January 22, 2023

The exact day of the Lunar New Year changes every year: the months of the year are marked by lunar cycles, so the New Year is celebrated on the date of the first new moon of the lunar calendar. In the West, this celebration is more associated with Chinese New Year, but is widely celebrated in East Asia, with countries and cultures having their own traditions. A common ritual is to take advantage of this time to catch up with friends and family, and many people travel to do so during this period. Fireworks are lit to scare away evil spirits, houses are messed up to usher in spring and the future of a new year, and a tray of sweets (called a Union Tray) is put on for visitors to the house, with all the sweets carefully chosen to symbolize health,  fortune and happiness. In many Chinese cities around the world, streets are closed to hold parades and festivities during this holiday.

New Year’s Day marks the first day of the Gregorian calendar.

Nowruz

March 20, 2023

Nowruz (meaning “new day” in Farsi), which begins at the spring equinox to celebrate the rebirth of nature, marks the first month of the Iranian solar calendar, which falls roughly on March 21 each year in the Gregorian calendar. Also known as Iranian or Persian New Year, it is widely celebrated in Central Asian countries, although millions of diasporas around the world commemorate this day. Poetry is recited, bonfires are skipped and folk music is played to mark the overcoming of grief and darkness, while houses are cleaned to pave the way to the future. It is a time of family gatherings, parties, street festivals and sports, with characteristics that vary depending on where it is celebrated.

Songkran

13-16 April 2023

The Songkran, which means “movement” in Sanskrit, is governed by the solar calendar and marks the passage of the Sun from Pisces to Aries in the zodiac. Songkran is celebrated throughout Thailand, with customs varying by region of the country. It is one of the most important events of the Buddhist calendar, in which water is the central element: Songkran is considered to spiritually purify and eliminate the bad luck of the previous year. The younger ones visit the older generations of their family during the New Year to pour water on the hands and feet of the elders as a sign of respect, but the more commercial side of the party is that people (including many tourists) throw water on the streets, often with water guns.

Muharram

July 19 – August 17, 2023

Muharram marks the first month of the Islamic calendar, and the beginning of the year is celebrated on the 10th day of the month (Day of Ashura). Traditions and rituals vary according to Islam’s two main sects, Shia and Sunni, although the main emphasis for most is remembrance, self-reflection and expression of gratitude. Many people around the world celebrate this period by visiting relatives, attending prayer sessions in mosques and fasting on or around Ashura Day. This New Year is rather a period of reflection and mourning: Muharram means “forbidden”, since fighting is forbidden during this month.

Enkutatash

September 12, 2023

The Enkutatash, which is celebrated on September 1 in the Ethiopian calendar (a solar calendar based on the Egyptian and Julian calendars, consisting of 12 months of 30 days with a thirteenth month of five or six days), results in the celebration of September 12 in the Gregorian calendar. The celebration, which means “jewel gift,” is believed to date back some 3,000 years, when the Queen of Sheba was returning home from a trip. Enkutatash celebrations last about a week and focus on family, with people traveling home to celebrate the New Year together with meals and beer. It usually marks the end of the rainy season in Ethiopia, when yellow daisies begin to sprout in the field.

Diwali

November 12, 2023

Diwali, a Hindu lunar celebration, is a five-day festival of lights focused on a new beginning. The dates change every year depending on the Hindu calendar, and usually fall between mid-October and mid-November, taking place on amavasya (new moon), the darkest night of the Hindu calendar. The customs vary according to the place where it is celebrated, and several gods are prayed, but the theme of light is maintained at all times. People clean and decorate their homes to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, with colorful sand entrances, rice paste and flowers. It is a time to visit neighbors and family, and Diwali is celebrated by praying to Lakshmi, sitting down to eat and ending with fireworks.

Rosh Hashanah

From 15 to 17 September 2023

In the Hebrew lunar month of Tishrei, Rosh Hashanah is celebrated on the first and second days as the Jewish New Year. It means “head of the year,” and it is a period of reflection to atone for faults committed throughout the year and forgive others. A shofar (ram’s horn trumpet) is played before and during Rosh Hashanah, as well as at the end of the period, which serves as a call to inspire soul search and growth for the following year. Traditions and customs vary from family to family, but symbolic foods are one of the central points of this era: pomegranate grains, for example, are eaten for a year full of good deeds. Much of Rosh Hashanah is spent in synagogue or at home.

NEW YEAR’S RITUALS TO ATTRACT GOOD LUCK IN 2023

One year ends and another begins. We are leaving behind a 2022 that marked the definitive return “to normality” after the pandemic. And we are about to start 2023 with the best possible expectations.

In the hope that it will be the best possible year in every way – and since we are all a little superstitious – we usually put into practice rituals and traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation.

In case you do not know them and want to make them; Or if you already practice them, but want to know what they symbolize, here we leave a “guide to good luck” for 2023.

New Year’s Eve Rituals: What to do on December 31 to have a good 2023

1- Throw salt and sweep out

This is an ancient tradition that should be put into practice during the morning of December 31 to  clear the home of negative energies and leave it well “clean” to start the year.

First, we place a handful of coarse salt in every corner of the house and behind the front entrance door. Then, we sweep all that salt from the inside to the door.

When all the salt is at the entrance, we gather it and throw it in a pot or place with soil. Once we finish, we light a white candle.

2- Brand new underwear… Red, pink, yellow or green?

Ritual with its own characteristics, for some brand new underwear (bombacha -or panties- pink and underpants) has a pagan origin linked to procreation and fertility. For others, it is related to the practice of believers who on the third Sunday of Advent lit a pink candle as a symbol of the joy generated by the arrival of Jesus into the world.

The truth is that this rite has passed through families from generation to generation. While some believe that they should be garments given at Christmas, all agree on the importance of releasing them on the 31st. And they assure that wearing new lingerie to start the year is a preview of prosperity and good luck.

However, with respect to color there are some divergences. Tradition speaks of pink underwear  since this color represents fertility, love, and promotes dialogue and self-esteem. And also red, which brings us passion, fire and energy.

However, they can also be yellow garments if what interests us in the year is to achieve economic prosperity; blue, if we seek to have peace, few problems and protection; or green, if what we prioritize for the coming year is health.

3- Dress in white

Color linked to purity, peace, and absolute renewal, it is advisable to dress in white (or, at least, wear a garment) to absorb good vibrations that will give us new and positive energy for the whole year that begins.

4- Eat 12 grapes at midnight

It’s hard, we know. Between the toast, the greetings and the joy of listening to the chimes that announce the start of a new year, things get complicated. But eating the 12 grapes at that time, so one after another and in a minute, is very important to be lucky for the next 365 days.

Or at least that’s what tradition indicates. Although it is not known for sure what the origin of this custom is, it is believed that each grape represents a month of the year and a wish for them.

5- “Burning” the (and the) past

On a white paper we write everything we did not like about the year, what we had to specify or what we want to change. We fold it in the middle and, on the outside and without taking risks, we burn it. This symbolizes that we are ready to start over with renewed energy.

Then, we can write on another piece of paper everything we want and we seek to realize this 2023 that begins; we keep it in a drawer and every beginning of the month we reread it to see what we could realize and what we have left pending.

THE TIPS TO MAKE YOUR LIST OF NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR 2023: THE DETAIL OF WRITING IT BY HAND

In ‘Putting the Streets’, our ‘coach’ Rafa Rodrigo gives us some guidelines to follow so as not to get frustrated with the objectives we set for the new year.

We are about to finish this year 2022, a year in which many things have happened, and in which, surely, if you look back, it has nothing to do with how you started it to how you finish it. Therefore, in ‘Putting the Streets’ they take stock and with the coach of the program, Rafa Rodrigo, we give some keys to the new year resolutions. “As companies do with the summary of the cycle, I recommend making a summary of what we have learned from this 2022,” he begins.

To give shape to the purposes, Rodrigo recommends “that it be written and not through the computer or mobile.” “It is known that when we write on paper we work other areas of the brain than those that are activated when we are in digital,” he emphasizes. Taking paper andpen, the coach asks that “three columns” be made. In the first column we will put “what I have learned in this 2022, what has it served you”. “Realizing that I don’t like my job, that I have to improve the relationship with my partner…” are some examples he gives.

In the next column we will put “what are you proud of”. “For example, I am proud that after 20 years I have managed to quit smoking or finally I have managed to play sports,” he says. Finally, in the third column, we will put “what things could you improve, that in 2022 you have not improved, but that you do want to improve”.

How to write them?

For Rafa Rodrigo, “the important thing is that we look at the things that can be improved and list it positively”. “Let’s imagine that we put: I don’t want to continue with this body, so I’m going to play sports. We are already making a negative statement. If instead we say: to get better with my body, I’m going to play sports. We’re saying the same thing, but for your brain you’re giving a different message,” the coach says.

“It’s important to put in a plan of action: when I’m going to do it,” he says as the next step. “We’re going to set a date. Then something can happen that prevents us, but we have to put an intention. You have to set a deadline,” he says. For the how, “we must point out in what way, using what tools and which people are going to help us”. After that, comes something important: “ask ourselves what can prevent us from achieving the goal”. “It’s important to know,” he emphasizes.

HYDRATING: WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT IN THE SUMMER?

Hydrating: Why is it so important in the summer?

It is important to hydrate in the summer because our body loses large amounts of water from the body due to high temperatures.  This causes the risks of dehydration to grow, making children and older adults more vulnerable to it and people who work in the sun as farmers and athletes.

Taking into account that 60% of the body is water, being the main component of blood, tissues and organs. It is important to always hydrate and even more in this season of high temperatures, which in our country are the first months of the year.

Hydrate: What does it do in the body?

As already mentioned above, water is unpredictable in the human body and vital for many metabolic processes to take place. Drinking water regulates body temperature and an example of this is the resistance of the human body; A person can go a week without eating and maintain moderate energy, however, if you do not drink water for a week your body will be much more affected and weak than the person who only did not eat. This example implies that water is more important than food for our body.

Hydrating is essential for our body.

In the summer people tend to expose themselves too much to the sun’s rays and this produces skin effects apart from dehydration. We tell you some ways to take care of high temperatures.

Ways to Hydrate

Apart from drinking the necessary water, the skin, hair and lips need hydration. To moisturize the skin you can use moisturizers before leaving the house and touch up as many times as necessary during the day. In the case of hair there are heat protectors in spray and liquid, which, mostly apart from moisturizing, protects the scalp from the sun’s rays. In the case of the lips and elbows that are very likely parts to dry there are balms that protect from the sun’s rays and prevent or help dissolve the symptoms of dehydration.

THEY CHOOSE THE EXPRESSION ‘ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE’ AS THE WORD OF THE YEAR IN SPANISH

File photo, taken on 28/02/2018, of a visitor to the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona talks on the phone as he passes by an artificial intelligence stand.

The expression “artificial intelligence” was chosen the word of the year 2022 in Spanish by the Urgent Spanish Foundation (FundéuRAE), announced Thursday this institution promoted by the Royal Spanish Academy and the EFE press agency.

The FundéuRAE justified the decision by the “important presence in the media” of this concept in the last twelve months, both “in the media (…) as in the social debate, due to the various advances developed in this field and the ethical consequences derived”.

The dictionary defines artificial intelligence as “a scientific discipline that deals with creating computer programs that execute operations comparable to those performed by the human mind, such as learning or logical reasoning.”

The FundéuRAE took advantage of the announcement to remember that “the expression artificial intelligence is a common name and, therefore, it is appropriate to write it entirely with lower case”, and to recommend that the acronym IA be chosen, preferable to the English AI (for “artificial intelligence”).

The winner of this 2022 has been chosen from among 12 candidates, some related to the war in Ukraine: apocalypse, cryptocurrency, diversity, ecocide, gas pipeline, gigafactory, flu, inflation, artificial intelligence, sexdoping, topar and Ukrainian.

Among the previous winners were escrache (2013), selfie (2014), confinement (2020) or vaccine (2021).

WHAT MEASURES TO TAKE IN THE FACE OF CHILDREN’S SENSITIVITY TO PYROTECHNICS?

What measures to take in the face of children’s sensitivity to pyrotechnics?

In the coming festivities, one of the most anticipated celebrations and shows, are the launches of pyrotechnic fires. And while it is true, they give us a beautiful scenario full of colors, in children who do not tolerate loud sounds and babies, this is not usually fun. We will show you some measures you can take before the sensitivity of children to the loud noises caused by pyrotechnics.

In infants, exposure to noise from pyrotechnics can lead to hearing loss and trouble falling asleep. In children who do not tolerate these noises, it is likely that when they remain exposed, they will have episodes of anxiety and discomfort while the fireworks shows are offered.

There are children between 4 and 5 years old who usually become familiar with the sound and colors of fireworks.

To this, some suggestions to avoid irritation, discomfort, frustration and stress in minors are to keep them in places that feel safe, along with an adult and with some type of particular entertainment. In babies and all children, you can buy special hearing aids for hearing protection would be ideal. There are also earplugs and bandages that can be placed around the child’s head.

In children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), extreme care should be maintained, since they tend to perceive greater sensitivity in loud noises and are hypersensitive to noises and lights emanating from pyrotechnics.

If you plan about these New Year’s Eve holidays, attend events where the launch of fireworks is included or if it is in your plans to use some, take into account the care of the smallest of the house and pets. Also, remember to throw them at a certain distance from the house or your family and guests.

This is a list of the number of cases per day since the first case was discovered in Panama

END NOTES:

Well, folks, it’s about that time to create a list of unreasonable New Year’s Resolutions.  Whether it’s “Lose 50 lbs (again)”, “Get Rich” or “Stop Drinking”… …which happen to be my top three for last year… …it’s going to be impossible to do without establishing real daily goals to live by.

This year, my top goals are:

  1. Learn to play guitar.  I have my first lesson on Tuesday!!
  2. Write that damn book!
  3. Lose 25 lbs – trying for another 50lbs just seems like setting myself up for failure.
  4. Get more involved with my boys’ school work.

What are your goals for 2023?  Having a hard time coming up with something you can actually stick to?  Here’s a list of recommendations that you could use:

Limit your coffee intake (yeah, I’m laughing too)

Attend more Networking Events

Get more sleep.

Stop procrastinating.

Study better (this one is for my boys)

Build a better budget

Organize your portfolio

Practice mindfulness

Cook something new each week – I like this one.

Read more books – and try new genres.

Start meal prepping – this helps to save time.

Prioritize your health – set up screenings now!

Exercise your brain daily.

Learn about plants and bring them into your life.

Walk more.  Or in my case, GET OUT AND WALK!

Plan a vacation – don’t overload it – make it simple and enjoy your time.

If you’ve never done it, plan a spa day for yourself.

Meditate.  Relax.  Enjoy the silence – try to do it daily, but at least once a week.

Volunteer your time, but don’t overdo it either.

Consider getting therapy.  Yep!

If you don’t have a lot of time to read, listen to audiobooks during your commutes instead of scrolling through social media BS.

Learn a new skill!

Learn more about your heritage.

Clean your damn house!

Organize your wardrobe.  Time for an upgrade?

Better your work routine.

And anything else positive for that matter…

Happy New Year!
