Another Carnaval has come and gone, but not without our classic carnaval experience.  (And to clarify, yes, it’s “carnaval” with all “a”s and not “carnival” with an “i”.)

We left for the country-side Friday afternoon in our effort to beat out the majority of the other carnaval-goers who still had to work until 4pm-ish.  Our plan was solid and with the expected delays from construction around Chorrera, we made it to Quesos Chela on schedule for our “parada obligada” or “mandatory stop”.  With cheese empanadas aplenty, a variety of juices and measured portions of chicheme, we happily indulged in our acquired bounty.  My queen smartly purchased a few samples of other cheeses for the trip, that fit in perfectly for our breakfasts over the following days.

It was quite the whirlwind, as we went straight to setting up tents, and after listing to the Mikkelson brothers fight over who gets which pillow,  I scooted them back to our chariot and on towards Playa Venao to check out the development since we last stopped over 4 years ago.  Wow.  Even at night, it’s impressive.  Their supermarket is one of the best in all of Panama and that’s no over-exaggeration.  Their only defect is selling their alcohol at such exorbitant rates.  Luckily, this wasn’t a weekend for my typical part-time alcoholic endeavors.  So, after scoffing at the booze prices, we moved on.  The restaurants in Venao are ALL amazing.  The second I sat to enjoy our food and beverages, all of the stress from the 7-hour road-trip left me like the waters of the Oria Grande cascading over the rocky terrain below…  OK, never mind, that was cheesy.  I was trying to be poetic…

Speaking of “Oria”, the following days were amazing until we decided to take a detour to check out Playas Miel and Playa Chumico – I used to go to the Chumico fishing tournament years prior, fishing for Corvina from shore.  We would watch for what appeared to be a red wave, flow to the surface and then cast like madmen (madindividuals?), trying to hook into the monster Corvinas as they fed on these beautiful red minnows.  Something wasn’t right though.  Our “quick” detour was taking too long and after over 20 minutes from what used to be a 5-minute jaunt from the main road, we finally made it to the beach and quite literally felt like we were in the middle of nowhere.  Putting my massive brain to work, I realized that this wasn’t the same route I took in the past and using terrain association, I noted that we were probably just a mile or two from where I used to fish from shore.  So, we headed down the beach on what seemed to be a makeshift, yet decent enough path that others had driven frequently.  But, to our dismay, in a matter of a few minutes, that route started to get softer and softer.  So, to avoid further distress, I decided to stop and turn around.  Bad idea.  Massive brain, indeed.  The rear right tire, just started spinning and the boys cried out in unison, “Dad, we’re sinking!”.  “Damn…  I should have used 4Low for this.”, I thought.  So, I switched the level to 4low, but instead of the desired result, I instead got a message on the dash board indicating that the 4wheel drive wasn’t working and that I should instead, “call the concessionary” (llamar al concesionario).  Yeah, like THAT was going to happen as I glanced over to my phone who only shrugged back as if saying, “Don’t look at me pal, I ain’t got no signal.”.  Then I thought, “Hhhmmm, maybe if I shut the car off and reboot it per se, maybe I can get it into 4WD?”.  So I did and it worked!  Without thinking (again), I tried to back out of my mess but instead proceeded to sink the front left tire as well.  (Insert “F Bomb”, here.)

With no desire to panic, I flipped that “take no prisoners” switch instilled in me from years of poor decisions and even worse mistakes.  I began barking out orders, “get the rope”, “find some wooden planks”, “put your cell phones down and be alert”, “help me dig this out”, but, to no avail, we were stuck and stuck good.  My queen was sweet enough to suggest “something”, but quite sincerely, I didn’t even hear what it was as I blurted out in perfect “Stupid Gringo”, “Who’s in charge here, me or you?”… …Oh I was going to pay for that later, but I swear it just came from some part of soul that I’d totally forgotten about.  So deep, that I even said it in English, which she’s pointed out since about 37 times now.  Our next recourse was to find help… …in the middle of nowhere… …with no houses for miles and definitely no cars either.  I grabbed my faithful child Brandon and told my grumbling queen to find the tow rope I threw in there before leaving Panama for which she sheepishly responded, “Oh, I took that out and left it in the tent.”… …I still have no desire to panic…

As we walked, I asked Brandon what time it was.  “It’s 515PM, Dad.”.  “That means we have about an hour to fix this problem.”, I told him.  “Why?  Do you have an appointment?”, he innocently responded.  I couldn’t help but to laugh and we both just smiled at each other as I avoided telling him, “No, that’s when it’s going to get too dark for us to effectively repair this mess I got us into.”.  Then, as if God himself was orchestrating something that I simply couldn’t comprehend, we ran into a guy from England with a brand new 4×4 pickup truck.  And if that weren’t fortunate enough, we then came upon 3 more people who were walking by, heading to the river to go fishing.  In a nearby hut, there was a rope and a shovel, along with 2 perfectly-sized pieces of wood.  We would soon learn that not only was the wood was of perfect length and thickness, but the rope we found was EXACTLY THE PERFECT LENGTH to reach from his pick up on solid land, to my ridiculously sunken Toyota Fortuner; not too long, not too short, but PERFECT.  In a matter of minutes, we had worked together to dig it out, place the boards, tie the rope, and pull that sucker out of harm’s way and on to solid ground.  And during this mess, Queen Sayira found the time to harvest a few flowers from a Saril bush we stumbled upon.  I asked Brandon what time it was again.  “It’s 615PM, Dad.  Wow, one hour exactly and you’re still on time for your meeting.”, he smiled.  That’s when I noted that I had sand everywhere… …eeevvveeerryyyywheeerreeeee.  So, we headed back to town absolutely FAMISHED and after washing up in Smiley’s sinks, we ate to our hearts content and continued to “carnavalear”.

The rest of the trip was amazing and although very eventful, it wasn’t “stuck in the middle of nowhere on a beach” eventful.  The culecos (getting hosed down by trucks with fire hoses), floats, never-ending adult beverages, local cuisine, decorations, queens, tractors, fireworks, and everything else, was quite perfect.  Oh, and we fished!!  I couldn’t go all the way to Pedasi without a little fishing…  Brett and Brandon got their first ever taste of fishing on the ocean and they both pulled something in on their own.  Brandon got a small yet eatable grouper and Brett caught a Jack Crevalle (“Urel” to the locals).  Yep, it was perfect.

NEW FIRE IS REGISTERED IN CERRO PATACÓN

Last minute! New fire is registered in Cerro Patacón.

This Wednesday, February 22, around 10:00 p.m. there was a new fire in Cerro Patacón due to a tumult of tires. At the moment, personnel from the Carrasquilla and Plaza Amador stations, with the support of Calidonia tankers, are in the process of extinguishing used tires that have caused the fire to be reactivated in Cerro Patacón.

It should be noted that the work of extinguishing the fire registered last Monday, took a week and a day to the Fire Department of Panama. So far the origin of this new fire is unknown, however, Major Julio Grueso, of the fire department had indicated “that people had tried to ignite in other places” in Cerro Patacón.

It is worth mentioning that the company Urbalia also reported last week that they continue to make a technical report to recognize what caused the fire last Monday, “without ruling out that it was the criminal hand that caused it.”

So far, the past statements of the Fire Department and the Urbalia Company, indicate that this second fire in Cerro Patacón, has probably been provoked. However, it remains to wait for the new declarations resulting from this “new disaster”, which ultimately originated again in the garbage dump.

MINERA PANAMA BEGINS PARTIAL DEMOBILIZATION OF EMPLOYEES

Minera Panama adds that it is taking a systematic approach to reduce operations.

Minera Panama reported Thursday that it has begun a partial demobilization of its workforce of more than 8,000 workers and contractors, the impact of which is expected to increase significantly in the coming weeks if concentrate shipments are not resumed.

It also highlights that the mine has stopped buying supplies and services equivalent to 20 million dollars in weekly income from more than 2,000 Panamanian companies.

“Cobre Panama contributes to approximately 5% of Panama’s GDP, constitutes 75% of the country’s goods export and has created at least 40,000 jobs,” the Canadian company highlights.

As they had announced days ago, Minera Panama confirmed today that it has suspended mineral processing operations because the Panama Maritime Authority has not allowed them to continue loading copper concentrate at the Punta Rincón port.

Minera Panama adds that it is taking a systematic approach to reducing operations to ensure the safety of its workforce, prevent damage and deterioration of equipment.

“In the short term, hundreds of planned maintenance jobs will be scheduled earlier when possible, along with commissioning work on the CP100 expansion and waste disposal at the mine.”

They add that essential environmental safety work will continue, including the care of tailings management facilities. While the excess energy generated by the plant will be offered for shipment to the national grid.

According to Minera Panama, the above actions may vary depending on the duration in which the operation is stopped.

“If the Maritime Authority allows it, Minera Panama could start shipping concentrate and resume mine operations in a matter of hours,” they stress.

Minera Panama emphasizes that it continues with the negotiations and is committed to achieving a result that benefits all parties.

The company considers the suspension of mineral processing operations as a result of government actions to be unnecessary given the continued progress in this regard.”

EL COPÉ AND ITS MORE THAN 30 TOURIST SITES TO VISIT

Person hiking in Omar Torrijos Herrera National Park.

198 kilometers from Panama City, is the community of El Copé, a picturesque town located in La Pintada de Coclé, with pleasant weather and many tourist attractions that people can enjoy in a single day, and where they can also camp.

This is a place to disconnect from everyday life, enjoy the amenities offered by nature, relax and have a good time in the different rivers, jets, or hiking in the mountains.

Gian Vergara, a young local tour guide certified by the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP), says that the greatest wealth of this area of the  country are the green areas, since it is attached to the central mountain range of Coclé, it also has a great variety of rivers.

He added that on the site is the General de División Omar Torrijos Herrera National Park, which is a large jungle region in the Central Cordillera de Coclé, a protected area that is home to a wide variety  of wild animals, some of which today are considered endangered.

In El Copé there are many rivers such as: Belencillo, Bejuco, Tigrero (Bajo Grande), Chirva, Zapillito, Zapillo, Blanco, Colorado, El Harino, Tigrero (Marta), Grande, Belén, Tife, to name a few.

In the community there are more than 30 places to visit, including waterfalls, mountains, agrotourism farms and National Park.  The most accessible are:

  • Chorro Alto: Walk of approximately 6 minutes with trail to get there.
  • Chorros Gil: To reach it you must make a walk of approximately 6 minutes with a trail.
  • Tenilda Waterfall. Approximately 15 minutes walking from where you leave the car.
  • Finca Agroturística La Leyenda: It can be reached by car.
  • Finca Agroturística El Edén: It can be reached by car.
  • Chorro Las Yayas: A circuit of 3 waterfalls with a concrete path, steps and railings.
  • Chorro Grande: A beautiful and large waterfall, to get there you must walk approximately 30 minutes.

“The top site or place I recommend visiting in the region is ‘El Gran Tife’, an imposing waterfall  in the heart of the jungle on the Caribbean slope within the General de División Omar Torrijos Herrera National Park, to get there you have to walk approximately 10 to 14 hours in total between hills, mud, jungle and rivers,  it’s an extreme adventure,” Vergara said.

“This is an adventure that is done in 2 or 3 days, camping in a community within the National Park.”

The “Gran Tife” is a super waterfall, also in the same adventure you visit a second smaller but equally large waterfall, so this hard hike at the end of the day is really worth it.

Tourism to this region, although it is not well potentialized, has brought great benefits for the inhabitants in terms of economic activation for the locals, since each tourist contributes economically to tourist guides, artisans, shops, transport, inns, markets, among other things.

This map shows a route of four sites that are unmissable if you visit El Copé.

Vergara explained that there is a route of the ATP tourist corridor  that goes from the entrance of La Candelaria in Rio Grande through El Copé and reaching Barrigón to the General Park of Division Omar Torrijos Herrera.

In addition, there are efforts to organize these communities to take better advantage of the activity. According to Vergara, there are organized communities like Marta and Barrigón. The first, Marta, has a community directive, who together with the ATP managed the realization of a program 1000 kilometers of trails and guide services are offered to tourists to the different attractions of the community.

While Barrigón has a small organization for the waterfall “Las Yayas”, some local people are in charge of the tourist attraction.

Although last year the district of La Pintada was declared a Tourist Municipality, local guides were prepared to offer tourist services, there is no main agency for tourism in the region, so most of the guides are independent.

“Tourism in the region is not very organized.”

How much does it cost to get from Panama City?

We made a small budget of how much a person visiting El Copé from Panama City could be spending.

According to Vergara, all prices are fixed except for the price per guide service, this depends on the number of people, the fewer people the price per person increases, the more people the price per person decreases.

You can visit one of these sites from $ 25 to $ 50 minimum, this includes your ticket by public transport from Albrook to El Copé and vice versa, transport of the internal route, local tour guide and lunch, and if you want to buy some more things, the expense depends on the same tourist.

In addition, he explained that people can bring their own food, but if you want to cooperate with the local economy, there are fondas and restaurants where you can eat delicious dishes after the ‘tours’.

And if you want to spend the night on-site, there are also cabins, hostels, and camping areas for camping.

Waterfall in El Copé.

What we know as El Copé

Vergara explains that El Copé, really is a community that belongs to the corregimiento of El Harino in the district of La Pintada, is popular for being a central place and  people from places of difficult access and mountain areas went out to El Copé to do their shopping, to get their medicines and other errands.

He went on to say that he is also popular for his patron saint of the Catholic Church “San José”, because people, not only from the region, but from other provinces came to the place to celebrate the patron saints of San José in El Copé.

After this, tourist sites or attractions were made known in the communities near El Copé, but as the name was already known, people tend to call the entire region by the name “El Copé”.

Definitely El Copé is a great option in the interior to clear everything, learn more about our beautiful country and live unforgettable experiences and where you can surely get good postcards.

THIRD HIV PATIENT IS CURED THANKS TO STEM CELLS

Third HIV patient is cured thanks to stem cells.

A study published Monday in the journal Nature Medicine reported that a third HIV patient has been cured after a stem cell transplant and that there is no trace of the AIDS virus in his body.

Before the case of this “Düsseldorf patient” (western Germany), two other HIV patients had managed to be cured, the first of them in Berlin in 2009 and the second in London in 2019.

According to the international consortium IciStem, this third patient had received a stem cell transplant as part of the treatment of leukemia. After that operation, he was able to interrupt his ongoing HIV treatment.

In the tests they did, they found no trace of viral particles, viral reserves or the immune response against the virus.

The three patients who managed to be definitively cured of AIDS have the same point in common: all three suffered from blood cancer and for that reason were treated with a stem cell transplant, which deeply renewed their immune system.

In all three cases, their donor had a foreign mutation in the CCR5 gene, a genetic change that prevents HIV from entering cells.

“During a bone marrow transplant, the patient’s immune cells are integrally replaced by donor cells, which allows the vast majority of infected cells to disappear,” explains virologist Asier Sáez-Cirion, one of the authors of the study.

“This is an exceptional situation when all these factors coincide for this transplant to be a double success, both to cure leukemia and HIV,” he adds.

As less than 1% of the population usually benefits from HIV’s protective gene mutation, few stem cell donors have it.

Although these cases give scientists hope to find a cure for AIDS, a stem cell transplant is a risky treatment that does not adapt to the situation of most HIV patients.

DARIEN: THREE PANAMANIANS CONVICTED OF CRIMES AGAINST MIGRANTS

Three people were convicted of aggravated technical rape (as a primary accomplice) and aggravated robbery by the Darién Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

One of those involved was also convicted of the crime of illegal possession of a firearm, to the detriment of 4 migrants of Venezuelan and Haitian nationalities.

In the development of the hearing that took place from February 8 to 19 of the present, the prosecutor Lorena Cárdenas managed to prove the criminal responsibility of the accused through expert, documentary and testimonial evidence that served as a basis for the Court of Oral Trial to unanimously dictate the guilty verdict for the three citizens.

The incident occurred on September 16, 2021, in the community of Quebrada Botella, Cabecera del Río Tuqueza, Comarca Emberá Wounaan, district of Cémaco, when the defendants using firearms and machetes through threats and intimidation stripped a group of migrants of their belongings.

In this same act, another subject through intimidation led a minor of 13 years, of Haitian nationality.

It should be noted that for these facts the Prosecutor’s Office asked the Court for the maximum penalty; The sentencing hearing was set for March 8, 2023

VOICE ACTORS DENOUNCE THAT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TAKES AWAY THEIR WORK

Voice actors denounce that artificial intelligence takes away their jobs.

Voice actors and actresses have denounced that the applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) are taking away their work, pointing out that their craft is in danger and therefore their livelihood as dubbing announcers and in other sectors of the film industry.

The voice actors are responsible for replacing the original dialogues of an audiovisual production, later, in a recording studio.

“Voice actors are increasingly being asked to sign the rights to their voices so customers can use artificial intelligence to generate synthetic versions that could eventually replace them, and sometimes without additional compensation, according to advocacy organizations and actors who spoke to Motherboard.

Although, programs to replicate voices with AI “have become increasingly popular for their accessibility, since they only require the user to record between 10 and 60 minutes of audio and then replicate it using AI. Several of these software versions are free, while others charge a small fee,” explains Rt.

AI threatens the work of voice actors.

Those contractual obligations are just one of many concerns players have about the rise of voice-generating artificial intelligence, which they say threatens to put entire segments of the industry out of work.

The news highlights the impact of the burgeoning AI-generated voice industry and the much lower barrier to entry for anyone to synthesize the voices of others.

Previously, a media outlet called Motherboard reported how 4chan members quickly took a beta program from artificial voice company ElevenLabs and used it to generate celebrity voices, including Emma Watson reading sections of Mein Kampf.

Now, the labor implications in the voice acting industry are also directly related to the work of ElevenLabs, since the company markets its service as an option for games, movies, audiobooks and more so the concern increases.

END NOTES:

None of us reading this is getting any younger.  And if we can’t stop that process, we might as well find a way to laugh about it.  These were sent to me by a colleague with a decent sense of humor and apparently enough time on his hands to search the web for these gems.

DON´T FORGET!

A couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a check-up, the doctor tells them that they’re physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember.

Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair ‘Want anything while I’m in the kitchen?’ he asks.

‘Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?’

‘Sure.’

‘Don’t you think you should write it down so you can remember it?’ she asks.

‘No, I can remember it.’

‘Well, I’d like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget it?’

He says, ‘I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.’

‘I’d also like whipped cream. I’m certain you’ll forget that, write it down?’ she asks.

Irritated, he says, ‘I don’t need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream – I got it, for goodness sake!’

Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment.

‘Where’s my toast?’

ROSE!

An elderly couple had dinner at another couple’s house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen.

The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, ‘   Last night   we went out to a new restaurant, and it was really great I would recommend it very highly.’

The other man said, ‘What is the name of the restaurant?’

The first man thought and thought and finally said, ‘What’s the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know, the one that’s red and has thorns.’

‘Do you mean a rose?’

‘Yes, that’s the one,’ replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, ‘Rose, what’s the name of that restaurant we went to last night?’

RULES ARE RULES

Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he didn’t need my help to leave the hospital.

After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator.

On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.

‘I don’t know,’ he said. ‘She’s still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.’

GETTING MARRIED

A senior citizen   said to his eighty-year old buddy:

‘So, I hear you’re getting married?’

‘Yep!’

‘Do I know her?’

‘Nope!’

‘This woman, is she good looking?’

‘Not really.’

‘Is she a good cook?’

‘Nah, she can’t cook too well.’

‘Does she have lots of money?’

‘Nope! Poor as a church mouse.’

‘Well, then, is she good in bed?’

‘I don’t know.’

’Why in the world do you want to marry her then?’

‘Because she can still drive!’

THE HEARING AID

A man was telling his neighbor,

‘I just bought a new hearing aid. It cost me four thousand dollars, but it’s state of the art. It’s perfect.’

‘Really,’ answered the neighbor. ‘What kind is it?’ ‘Twelve thirty.’

THE HOT MAMMA

Moe, an 82-year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical.

A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm.

A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Morris and said, ‘You’re really doing great, aren’t you?’

Morris replied, ‘Just doing what you said, Doc: ‘Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.’’

The doctor said, ‘I didn’t say that… I said, ‘You’ve got a heart murmur; be careful.’

THE BANANA SPLIT

A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool… After catching his breath, he ordered a banana split.

The waitress asked kindly, ‘Crushed nuts?’

‘No,’ he replied, ‘Arthritis.’
